Maafa
Services of Remembrance

uring the month of February, as the nation celebrates Black History Month, Trinity UCC takes this time to inform, educate and . . . remember, the Maafa. Derived from the Swahili work for disaster, terrible occurrence or great tragedy, Maafa was first introduced into the African American lexicon by Mirimba Anis book Let the Circle Be Unbroken: The Implications of African Spirituality in the Diaspora. Some academics, Maulana Karenga among them, prefer the term African Holocaust to describe the horrible circumstance of the African slave trade because of the implications of intention, others favor Maafa, because it speaks to the continual, constant, complete, and total system of human negation and nullification inflicted on Africans and Africans in diaspora. During the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, 90% of those enslaved were sent to the Caribbean or South America The Trans-Atlantic slave trade reduced the population of men in Africa by about 20% Studies and analyses typically state that around 13 million slaves were shipped from Africa and around 11 million arrived at ports throughout the Americans and Caribbean, but . . . While those numbers indicated 2 million died in transit, that number is woefully low: o As many as 8 million Africans may have died, in order to bring 4 million slaves to the Caribbean islands. (Jan Rogozinski, A Brief History of the Caribbean) o David Stannard, in American Holocaust, estimates that 30 to 60 million Africans died while being enslaved o Frederic Wertham clams that 150 million Africans died as a result of the slave trade

What does this death, disruption, and depopulation mean to Africa? The stripping of product labor, of intellectual capacity and cohesive societies combined with colonialism to stifle potential and created many of the structural challenges African continues to struggle with today! *NOTE: An excellent source of information, www.africanholocaust.net.

Unison Scriptures
JUDGES 2:10-23 (NIV)
After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 11Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. 12They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They provoked the Lord to anger 13because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14In his anger against Israel the Lord handed them over to raiders who plundered them. He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 15Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. 16 Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. 17Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. Unlike their fathers, they quickly turned from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of obedience to the Lords commands. 18Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord had compassion on them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them.19But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. 20 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and said, Because this nation has violated

the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers and has not listened to me, 21I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their forefathers did. 23 The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua. 11:00 a.m.

JUDGES 2:10-23 (The Message)

10 Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didnt know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel. 11-15 The People of Israel did evil in Gods sight: they served Baal-gods; they deserted God, the God of their parents who had led them out of Egypt; they took up with other gods, gods of the peoples around them. They actually worshiped them! And oh, how they angered God as they worshiped god Baal and goddess Astarte! Gods anger was hot against Israel: He handed them off to plunderers who stripped them; he sold them cheap to enemies on all sides. They were helpless before their enemies. Every time they walked out the door God was with thembut for evil, just as God had said, just as he had sworn he would do. They were in a bad way. 16-17 But then God raised up judges who saved them from their plunderers. But they wouldnt listen to their judges; they prostituted themselves to other godsworshiped them! They lost no time leaving the road walked by their parents, the road of obedience to Gods commands. They refused to have anything to do with it. 18-19 When God was setting up judges for them, he would be right there with the judge: He would save them from their enemies oppression as long

as the judge was alive, for God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning because of those who afflicted and beat them. But when the judge died, the people went right back to their old waysbut even worse than their parents! running after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Stubborn as mules, they didnt drop a single evil practice. 20-22 And Gods anger blazed against Israel. He said, Because these people have thrown out my covenant that I commanded their parents and havent listened to me, Im not driving out one more person from the nations that Joshua left behind when he died. Ill use them to test Israel and see whether they stay on Gods road and walk down it as their parents did. 23Thats why God let those nations remain. He didnt drive them out or let Joshua get rid of them. 6:00 p.m.

JUDGES 2:10-23 (NRSV)

Moreover, that whole generation was gathered to their ancestors, and another generation grew up after them, who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel. 11Then the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and worshiped the Baals; 12and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they followed other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were all around them, and bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger.13They abandoned the Lord, and worshiped Baal and the Astartes. 14 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them, and he sold them into the power of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15Whenever they

marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them to bring misfortune, as the Lord had warned them and sworn to them; and they were in great distress. 16 Then the Lord raised up judges, who delivered them out of the power of those who plundered them. 17Yet they did not listen even to their judges; for they lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their ancestors had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord; they did not follow their example. 18Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who persecuted and oppressed them. 19But whenever the judge died, they would relapse and behave worse than their ancestors, following other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They would not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors, and have not obeyed my voice, 21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died. 22In order to test Israel, whether or not they would take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their ancestors did, 23the Lord had left those nations, not driving them out at once, and had not handed them over to Joshua.

UNISON SCRIPTURES

Lenten Meditation
THE UNFOLDING MESSAGE LEARNING WHO GOD IS

hat can help us to know and appreciate the One who undergirds our life? The gospel of John helps us with this. As we try to contemplate who God is and what God can provide for our lives, we hear the words, No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father; he has made him known (John 1:18). These cryptic words, somewhat confusing to our modern ears, contain an eternal truth. We see God most clearly in and through Jesus Christ. In other words, as we see Jesus, living and speaking in certain ways and revealing a sense of Gods presence, we come to realize what God makes available to us. We humans cannot fully fathom the infinite. We cannot encapsulate God. In Jesus, though, we gain the knowledge of God that is essential for sensing Gods presence and guidance within our lives. God was in Christ. (II Corinthians 5:19) These words of scripture should be the background for all our attempts to live out our divine calling. Like Jesus, God is personal and near, living in our midst. God is our standard for righteousness, what is good and right, what is true and wise. Jesus attitude and actions show what this means in specific, lived-out ways. God is a loving, healing force in our midst, just as Jesus again and again showed healing compassion and affection. He was understanding and caring. He brought wholeness and renewal of life. Where some of the prophets proclaimed Gods judgment, Jesus does affirm what is right and true, but more as a guide and standard than a condemnation. Jesus self-giving revealed Gods caring and love. These illustrate how his unfolding message helps us to grasp who and what God is. The season of Lent challenges us to pause and take time to know God better. As Jesus at times moved away from the crowds, can we move away from our crowded agenda, our busyness, our pursuit of physical and financial well-being long enough to sense the highest values that are God-centered and that Jesus calls us to?

Fasting
Fasting for the Lenten Season
This year, God has called us to Raise Leaders and Develop Disciples. I am calling a church-wide fast this Lenten season. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. This year 2013, God will reveal Gods purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate and learn the power of quiet time. Question: I have never fasted before? Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove something you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet. Question: Is fasting biblical? Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear Gods voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life. Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces February 13 February 19 Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m. February 20 February 26 Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m. February 27 March 5 - Eat only one meal a day March 6 March 12 Drink only juices, water and/or tea March 13 March 19 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 20 March 31 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet Fast #2 The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king. February 13 February 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m. February 20 February 26 Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m. February 27 March 5 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 6 March 12 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added. March 13 March 19 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added March 20 March 31 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m. Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour.
*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/ doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

FASTING

To Do Justice
Dear Trinity Family, Today, we are asking you to sign a letter asking Mayor Rahm Emanuel to consider supporting the call, proposed by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) for a democratically elected civilian police accountability council over the Chicago Police Department. The letter you received comes on the heels of the Second Peoples Hearing on Police Crimes, which was held yesterday at the University of Chicago. Both our Senior Pastor and our Pastor Emeritus were supporters of the call for these hearings. Testimony from across the city was heard from citizens who were victims of police misconduct, disrespect, and brutality. The CAARPR believes that a Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) is essential in the effort to repair the broken relationship between the police department and the communities they are supposed to protect. Law enforcement has traditionally resisted the establishment of such bodies, arguing that law enforcement officers, like lawyers and doctors, are professionals and therefore are in the best position to discipline themselves. But, it would be fairly easy to make the argument that no professional group has been effective in policing itself as there are just too many vested interests and interlocking relationships. Most police departments around the country have an internal affairs division that is responsible for investigating misconduct allegations and disciplining officers, but internal review measures have not always proven effective. Critics disagree with the notion of the police policing themselves and find such a system to be inherently flawed and lacking in objectivity. Consequently, many citizens and civic organizations support aggressive external controls as the most effective means to combat police misconduct and brutality. Chicago has spent over $45 million in taxpayer money to settle over 400 police misconduct lawsuits between January 2009 and November 2011. Please consider the call for establishing a common trust and accountability between the Chicago Police Department and the communities it serves by supporting an elected, unbiased, civilian accountability council. Thanks and God Bless, Trinity UCC Justice Watch Team

RAISING LEADERS and DEVELOPING DISCIPLES

January Matthew 16:24 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." February Luke 4:18-19 (NIV) The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor. March Luke 10:19 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. April Romans 10:1-2 (NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. May 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. June Romans 5:8 (NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. July Philippians 4:13 (NLT) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. August Jeremiah 1-7 (NLT) The Lord replied, Dont say, Im too young, for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you." September Isaiah 1:3 (NLT) Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes its masters carebut Israel doesnt know its master. My people dont recognize my care for them. October Isaiah 40:29 (KJV) He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. November John 17:21 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. December Matthew 1:23 (KJV) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
