President’s Message
Where did this year go? As we prepare for the holidays,
keep in mind that RAA is making changes and will be
enforcing existing policies. Because our membership has
grown and more art is being displayed in the Gallery, strict
adherence to the rules is of the utmost importance.
The membership dues remain the same for all except for
Full-time Student memberships that will decrease from
$20 to $10. The membership year will still be January 1st
to December 31st, however, dues are payable by January
1st! They become delinquent on February 15th. Lengthy
grace periods will no longer be granted. Envelopes for
new/renewal memberships are provided in this
newsletter to simplify your compliance. This will insure
that Membership Directories are available earlier in the year.
Showing artists who exhibit their work in each show period
MUST BRING IN THEIR WORK ON THE ASSIGNED
TAKE-IN DAY — no sooner or later — unless cleared with
the Take-In Chair, Pat Ford. Only emergency reasons will
be accepted. If artists are not available on Take-In day, they
are required to have their work delivered FOR them on the
appointed day.
Each artist who brings in Wall Art (category “A”) is allowed
only TWO pieces, not THREE per show, beginning January
2009. Note that all pieces may not be hung if there is
little room. If the artist has a Redlands scene for the
REDLANDS WALL, one more piece may be allowed.
As of January, 2009 NO ITEMS EXCEPT JEWELRY MAY
BE PLACED IN JEWELRY DISPLAY CASES!! Items other
than jewelry MUST BE DISPLAYED AS TABLE ITEMS OR
HUNG ON APPROPRIATE RACKS.
In addition, ALL ARTISTS WHO MAKE AND EXHIBIT
JEWELRY DO NOT HAVE CLAIM TO ANY ONE SPOT
FOR THEIR WORK. A new system is in the works to rotate
display areas for jewelry-makers in each show period.
ARTISTS WHO EXHIBIT AND SELL NOTE CARDS must
pay fees for EACH SHOW PERIOD… unless they also display
in other categories… or their cards will be removed.
Also, no one may place or move any items belonging to
them or anyone else without the express permission of the
HANGING COMMITTEE.
And lastly, all items MUST be picked up at the end of each
show on appointed day, unless given prior approval by Pat
Ford.
I prefer not to go on about rules in this column, but it has
become necessary. Having clarified the above current and
new rules that will be enforced, it is important that you
know RAA continues to support all artist members. We
simply ask that everyone abide by the rules. Please do your
part to make RAA Gallery shows work by working together.

Remember the Giving Spirit
Family Services was thrilled when Tomi Olson, RAA
President, told them we were collecting canned
goods, gifts and art supplies for their Christmas
give-aways. If you have not already done so, you have
until Dec. 15 to put your gift items in the collection
boxes at the Gallery. It feels good to give.
NOTES FROM MCAEEF
In November the MCAEEF Committee was invited to
Redlands High School by the teachers and students of
the Special Education Classes to celebrate the completion
of the mural “Delectable Art,” which now enhances
the walls outside of their classrooms, and was funded
by the Margaret Clark Art Education Fund (MCAEEF).
The students from four summer school session classes
were joined by students from Cope Middle School, in
painting a mural of gardens and food produce. The former
Cope students are now in the RHS program. The mural
illustrates the students’ produce and flower gardens, and
the life skills which they are learning by the preparation
and serving of food to various groups.
Under the leadership of Special Education teachers Cheryl
Kennedy and Judy White, and support of Daniel Brown,
also Special Ed. faculty, the students treated us to a very
nice luncheon. Those of the Committee attending were
Lois Fair Wilson, Joan Jensen, Janet and Fred Edwards,
Lori Powell, Peggy Dornbach, and Jeff and Suzanne
Owens. Among the others at our table were Ginger Peña,
the artist who designed and directed the painting, Emily
Bueermann who inspired the project and the event, and
her husband Redlands Police Chief Jim Bueermann, and
Ms. Chris Rivera, Principal of Redlands High School.
After lunch was served, we and many of the students from
the classes gathered outside by the mural for a ribbon-
cutting and picture. Penny Swartz, Press-Enterprise
reporter, was there to document the event.
It was a treat to see the happy results from the
implementation of one of our grants from the spring of
2008. The committee is currently involved in evaluating
several new grant requests.

MULTI-MEDIA MINI SHOW
Our jurist, Daniel Foster is an accomplished visual artist
and poet. For the past 25 years he has pursued his passion
for painting, installation art, photography, concrete poetry,
conceptual art, public art and many other contemporary
forms of art. In January 2009 he will become the
President/CEO of The Community Foundation Serving
Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, leaving the post
of Executive Director at the Riverside Art Museum that he
initiated in 2003.
This show, like no other, allows many “non-fine arts”
artists the chance to show in a juried exhibit. You don’t
have to be a professional artist to enter the show. Just
bring in your best effort. Daniel is looking forward to the
variety of art I’ve promised him. Make yours stand out!
ARTIST-IN-THE-NEWS
Joe Colley will be displaying his photography at the
University of Redlands Alumni House from January 6 to
February 28. He will be showing his black & white and
color photos taken along the Oregon Coast, the 3 Cape
Loop.
CONGRATULATIONS TO PLEIN AIR
WINNERS
The awards and opening reception for the RAA/ Redlands
Conservancy Plein Air Show was held Sunday, November
23. The show featured Redlands’ Parks. First place award
went to Ginger Peña for “Prospect Park”, second place
to Joan Coffey for “Shadows at the Bowl”, third place to
Leah Balestieri for “Orange Trees at Prospect Park” and
honorable mention to Pat Ford for “Looking up at the
Bluffs Park”. Ben Bridgers, art professor at the University
of Redlands, juried the show. Sixteen artists participated
and entered 31 pieces for the Show Within A Show in the
East Gallery.
Many thanks to the other artists who painted for the show:
Luz Maria Perez, Betty Hoadley, Lisa Mozzini-McDill, Julie
R. Evans, Tomi Olson, Terry Chacon, Louise M. Smith,
Patty Hayden, Jerome Lipetzky, Pat Meeker, Ed Sotello and

PROGRAM FOLLOW-UP
Cindy Lantier and Sandy Davies are anxiously awaiting
their finished prints, due this coming Friday (probably the
day you receive this newsletter). Cindy was one of the lucky
drawing winners of the FREE giclée prints given out by
Fernando Chavez of Sol Digital Studio, RAA’s November
program demonstrator. Sandy was a tag-along, enticed
by the quality of the work presented at the program and
Fernando’s low prices. (Other drawing winners for the Free
giclée were Tomi Olson and Jim Crippen. Sue Noon won a
25% discount coupon.)
Cindy and Sandy drove to his Corona studio, an easy 50
minute drive from Redlands. He has his studio in the
garage at his home — plenty of space to spread out the
equipment he needs to make the prints. Cindy had brought
a mixed media collage, 11” x 14”, and Sandy brought a
watercolor painting, 17” x 17”. Fernando talked to each
of them about their art, getting the details he needed to
produce the giclées. Sandy ordered a full size giclée and
two 8 x 10’s. The initial computer scan of her painting was
$100 and the prints about $50... totaling $150. He keeps
the scanned image on file and any future prints would be
just the cost of the prints. Cindy & Sandy each asked for a
disk with their scanned images to download onto their web
sites. They didn’t ask for a disk that would produce a full
size print, but it probably wouldn’t have cost much.
A week later, they went back to Fernando to see their
proofs. He produced a 7” x 10” proof for their review
and asked for any corrections. Sandy wanted the colors
on hers a bit more saturated — a little more contrast.
Cindy wanted some color correction, to enhance the
turquoise from her original. Fernando wrote the correction
instructions right on the proof so he would remember.
Then he says, “come back next week for the finished
giclées”.

ART-ON-STATE-STREET RECAP
Thank you to the event helpers, Pat Fox, Sue Kovacevich,
La Dena Evans, Carol Angier, Eileen Brown, Bill Breer, Jim
Gillette and Cindy Lantier. Francis Wiley brought the Beryl
Larkin paintings to sell and my husband, Ron, took the
leftovers home at the end of the day.
Even though the weather was dreary and the buyers only
trickled in, RAA made a decent $1000 profit. I think it was
because we had such a great variety of art for sale.
Other behind the scenes vendors made the event a
success... Cindy from Pat’s Pots got us a nice porta-potty,
Traffic Specialties gave us a break on the barricades rental,
Cheryl Reidhammer’s overnight security saved some of us
a lot of hauling our stuff around Sunday morning and the
members of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority had their hot coffee
and cool refreshments.
Thank you also, to all the artists who braved the weather
to get the jump on the holiday buying season.

INTERESTING Watercolor EXHIBIT
At the Western Center for Archaeology and Paleontology in
Hemet is a beautiful show of watercolors by A. R. Valentien.
He was commissioned to paint 1100 watercolors of western
flowers and plants which he called “plant portraits”, in the
early 1900s. There are 80 “portraits” shown and are really
gorgeous. The show will continue until January 18, 2009
at the Western Center, 2345 Searl Parkway, Hemet CA,
951-791-0033. The rest of the museum is interesting too
(prehistoric bones from digging the Diamond Lake dam
and pioneer history of Hemet valley.)

TECH TIPS ■ From
Sandy Davies
Joan Wiley reminded me of a technique
that helps enlarge or reduce your reference source
onto your drawing/painting surface. It’s called,
“gridding”. For example, if you have a 4”x6” photo
that you want to paint into a 16”x20” piece, draw a
grid — three lines horizontal and three lines vertical
— on both pieces. Examine one square in the
reference photo and transpose what you want onto
the corresponding square on the blank paper. Like
“eating an elephant one bite at a time”, square by
square, move the image. When you’re done, erase the
grid lines and paint away!
n Have you noticed the tape used at Take-in? The
tape has a blue plastic center which identifies it as
the 3M Scotch Tape brand Removable Tape. (It is sold
in a blue box) The tape has a “soft stick”. The tape
will stick to paper but not tear the paper when you
remove it. While stronger than “Post-it Notes”, it is
a weaker bond than regular tape. The take-in crew
uses it because it won’t hurt the art when they attach
the I.D. number… although they still don’t use it on
gilded frames, just in case. I use it when I want to
temporarily tape something together. Get yourself a
roll, you’ll be surprised how often you use it.
