    PURPOSE

    PURPOSE: to & for


    We use to + infinitive to talk about a persons purpose (to say why someone does something).
    I went to England to learn English. He is going out to do some shopping. She went to the Sports Centre to play basketball.

    We use for + noun to talk about a persons purpose (to say why someone does something).
    Im going out for a walk. We went to a restaurant for lunch.

    COMPARE:
    TO + Innitive We went to a restaurant to have lunch I must go to the supermarket to buy food FOR + Noun We went to a restaurant for lunch I must go to the supermarket for food

    REMEMBER!
    We do not use for + innitive to say why someone does something:
    I went to England for learn English > I went to England to learn English We went to a restaurant for eat dinner > We went to a restaurant to eat dinner

    We use for + V-ing to talk about the purpose or function of a thing.


    A thermometer is a thing we use for measuring temperature. We use a knife for cutting bread.
