Scope and Objectives of the Course The objective of the course is to provide a fundamental understanding of light wave communication systems. Students will learn about key photonic devices that form the backbone of the optical communication systems. These include overview of optical fiber communications, step and graded index optical fibres that support single and multimode transmission, coherent (LASER) and incoherent (LED) optical sources and PIN and APD optical receivers, WDM concepts, optical amplifiers, non-linear effects, optical networks. The course will focus on the purpose and performance characteristics of major elements in an optical link. These elements include optical fibres, light sources, photo detectors, passive optical devices, optical amplifiers etc.,
