Teachers Role in Reading

Teaching Creatively Breakthrough Education By HENRY S. TENEDERO August 8, 2012, 3:02pm http://mb.com.ph/articles/368921/teaching-creatively#.UP9F3B03tQ4

As what I have learned in the past CTP subjects we have discussed, teachers role in learning is act as a facilitator in the students learning process. The teacher should first assess the students knowledge on the subject matter mainly what he/ she knows about it. Through these assessment, the teacher will be able to identify what kind of learners he/ she is dealing with and will eventually know what kind of strategies or methods he / she will be using to facilitate the learnings of the student. In assessing the students, there are different features to be considered and implemented. Here are some of them: Focus Questions: Overview of strategy; general requirements and limitations of implementation. Description: Simplified but thorough introduction. Purposes: Indications of appropriate usage. Limitations: Contra-indications and potential problems. Teaching Goals: List of course goals addressed by the strategy. Step-by-Step: Explicit directions for implementation. Variations: Alternative uses and elaborations. Analysis: Making sense of the data; uses in evaluation. Pros and Cons: Advantages and disadvantages

The students prior knowledge, beliefs and ideas should be corrected based on what the students understood and believed in. Their prior knowledge should be acknowledged because the students could not easily and readily identify and comprehend any ideas or situations he/ she is unfamiliar with. Maybe a brief review on the past lessons would be essential to review the students understanding. With a brief overview or introduction, the students would be able to see the link, connection or relationship of the past lessons that have been read with the present ones. Unfamailiar words could be defined through various methods of teaching reading such as giving some examples and using it in a sentence or giving situations that could be related to the given words or phrases so that the students could draw the meaning of words on their own. The teacher could then ask their students to give their own examples through sentences or situations based on how they understood these unfamiliar words. At an early age, a child develops their own ways of acquiring knowledge or learnings. They tend to use different strategies and methods. They use some patterns based on how they perceived their teachers teaching approaches or strategies. For example, as the student perceived that the teachers teaching style is routinary, they will use the same learning approach in order to learn and absorb the topics/ lessons that have been discussed. Another example, if the teacher has the habit of lifting ideas or using questions from the book, then the student will not be challenged enough to learn, instead the student will just stick to the book and no additional learnings occur. Lessons will be expected as it happens. Some students make some outlines as they study or use some techniques on how to memorize some information such as Mnemonics(maybe through beginning letters of the words), Sequencing (from simple information to more complex). This can be done with or without the help of the teacher. Different learners need different types of approaches or strategies depending on their interests and attitudes towards the lesson. Appropriate motivational activities could be given prior to the lesson proper to make them relaxed and comfortable as they start to read. It is important to ensure that students learn to use these strategies on their own, without relying on teachers for support. Teachers need to lessen intervention gradually and allow students to take greater responsibility for their learning. The students should learn how to set their own goals and how they could correct their own errors. They need to have their own assessment of their learnings and evaluate themselves. These are appropriate for the learning strategies they will use and if these strategies should be modified or continuously used by them. These strategies could be developed through discussion, debates, and essays wherein the students could express and justify themselves. On the otherhand, the teachers could help their students develop these strategies through giving consistent monitoring and exercises/ activities after reading. The teacher could also follow collaborative strategies to engange and sustain students interests in learning and honing reading and comprehension skills.
