FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT


Name: EMILY FAIRBANK Blog Address: http://e-fairbank1013-fmp.blogspot.co.uk Rationale A print based investigation with a typographic basis into branding, identity, packaging promotion with a focus on retail and the entertainment industry. I am a typographic based designer and the main focus of my final major project will be on branding for packaging within the food and drink sector. I am also interested in design within the electronic music industry so my there will be a focus on print based design for this sector. My dissertation was based on the branding and identity of music so I am going to continue to explore this in my design practice. I am looking to explore typography, in particular more hand rendered typefaces that I can apply to my designs. I want to incorporate more geometric shapes into my work to give the brands more depth, and work on icon design.

Practical Skills / Workshops what, why and when? Print / Print Processes and Finishes My main focus in design is print based media so in my Final Major Project I would like to capitalized on the skills I have already developed and extend my both my knowledge and practice in this area. Within all the packaging briefs I will be focusing on stock textures, print finishes and surface patterns (where appropriate) to create high quality, professional design outcomes. I will also be incorporating more laser cutting into my design work to give the packaging designs a more detailed finish. Web Design This is a sector I am interested in, I went to the seminars last semester but I would like to capitalise on what I have learnt in order to be at a good standard of design for web by the time I graduate. I feel it is important to have a balance of print and digital based work, especially as my work is primarily print based at present.

Brief 1: Bella Rae Photography Rationale:

A collaborative brief with a third year Photography student at Manchester. I will be designing her branding and identity and a publication / professionally bound book of her work and her expand her online presence. This will give me the opportunity to work with someone outside my course and also with printers in the production of her book. Brief 2: Untapped Music Label Rationale: A print based investigation to design the branding, packaging and promotional material for the new house and electronic music label. There will be a focus on print finishes, typography, colour and geometric shapes, and propose the design for the online presence for the label. Brief 3: Marinas Pies Rationale: Live brief to name and brand the new business of Marinas range of homemade pies. Design a range of packaging and promote the pies as well as napkins, bags, cutlery. There will be a range of size and flavours; home use and on the go. Type and print based investigation Brief 4: Coffee Branding & Packaging Rationale: Name and brand a new coffee range that uses language and colour to humour target audience. For new coffee drinkers it is difficult to tell which strength coffee they need or will like, take this concept and represent it simply through print based typographic and colour investigation of packaging. Rebrand and redesign the packaging for the local deli Chadlington Quality Foods to represent the high quality, home made and locally sourced nature of the shop. Printed and Digital promotion of the products and identity update. Typography and print processes based brief. I have been using their work as an influence on my style throughout the last module.

On going dialogue with designers and studios who have a focus on the music and retail sector especially in the Leeds and London area as I would like to gain more practical knowledge of design for these sectors. Bella Rae Photography Collect the range of images and text that she will wants to use in the 1 publication and get quotes from printers in the Manchester / Leeds area. Publication needs to be printed for her deadline at the end of April. Design the business cards and get them printed by Moo in time for her end of year exhibition. Untapped Record Label Research into the print and packaging side of a label. Research into the 2 other labels and their branding. Investigate how to incorporate geometric imagery into the label identity. Marinas Pies Collect the list of different pie flavours and sizes and examples of current pie 3 packaging. Explore how to make the pies edible on the go through packaging its accessories. Exploration into the stock and other materials needed to be used in order to support and retain freshness of the pies when the business is up and running. Coffee Brand Research the competitors and the language that supermarket products have 4 used to humour customers and make their food and drink choices easier and clearer to understand. 5 Rebrand the Local Deil Research into the other competitor logos, and select the range of products I will be designing for.
