Course Description: Get an introduction to cell biology from a molecular perspective. Learn how cells are studied, and investigate current knowledge of cell membranes, organelles, cytoskeletons, cell growth and division, cell communication, and particularly the mechanism underlying cellular events. At the end of this course, you should have an understanding of general concepts in cell biology and be able to read and interpret cell biology literature. Prerequisite: One year of college-level general biology for majors Textbook: Molecular Cell Biology, 6th Edition, by Lodish et al. We will not be covering all the material in this book, so the lecture slides will be the basis for exams. Course website: We will be using bSPACE, UC Berkeleys course website tool, for this class. I will post all lecture slides and other relevant course documents there. Office hours: I will be available to answer questions before and after class, and during the break. If you need more than a few minutes, please email me to schedule an appointment. Attendance: Class starts at 6:35 pm. Please be on time! If you miss a class: Be sure that you are caught up on the reading Download the lecture slides from the course website Get notes from your classmates Check in with me if you have questions Make-up exams: There will be no make-up exams. If you have a time conflict with a scheduled exam, you must notify me at least two weeks in advance to make accommodations. Food: You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks, but please keep it quiet. Academic Dishonesty: Any plagiarism or other forms of cheating will result in a score of zero on the exam or assignment, AND YOU WILL BE REPORTED TO UC BERKELEY EXTENSION FOR FURTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTION. In other words, do NOT copy and paste from the textbook or Wikipedia without providing proper citations. Cheating can result in dismissal from the course and disciplinary action from UC Extension. Cheating is the single easiest way to destroy your chances of being accepted to graduate or professional school!
