What do you expect in Lent? Do you expect anything? I always expect to slow down a bit so that I can experience God in a different way, but usually I go at a quicker pace through each day. Visiting with a shut-in or someone who is sick permits me a moment to slow down and to listen to what God is doing. Maybe thats what Lent is about finding God in the midst of the fast-paced and over-charged days of late winter and early spring. When I go to visit with someone, whether in Lent or any other season, I can always expect a story. I like stories, especially ones that tell of how we touch each others lives. Sometimes theyre quite personal, sometimes funny, sometimes sad; but always, the stories that I hear remind me about two things: first, no matter the frailties and vulnerabilities of life I
experience, someone else is experiencing them, too; second, God is present always.
Recently, I visited with Joyce Motter. As is our custom, we shared communion and talked about family and friends. She always wants to know how everyone is getting along in my family and in the congregation. Without fail, she astounds me at her ability to remember so many details about the lives of so many who have passed through the doors of our congregation. She shared with me a story that has brightened her day since Advent Season! Joyce opened her doors to Christmas carolers from Zions on Sunday evening, 16 December 2012. As always before, she was in the process of decorating for Christmas. Her teddy bears lined the stair and hallway, her Christmas tree was not yet up and her train set didnt run that night, but she enjoyed the sounds of Christmas with the carolers. She especially enjoyed the voice of one young man who, in her words, was just about this tall (raising her hand to just a few inches above her 4ft); he had blonde hair and he wanted to sing me a song. That really made my Christmas! Do you know who he was? Well, Joyce, I said, it sounds like one of Charlie Stephens grandsons. I think Zach Stephens sang to you. Oh, that really impressed me to see a young man who wanted to sing for me and he sang so well, I tapped my toe and tried to sing along with him. She laughed as she remembered the experience. Zachs song touched her heart and reminded her that mere words cannot describe how God visits us in unexpected ways. His simple act of grace invited her into his life as together they participated in Gods dance of life. Zach did not count the cost of putting himself in a vulnerable situation of singing to Joyce and her heart opened up to Gods grace. He reminded Joyce, through his own presence with her that God was present with her. Perhaps too rarely do we think of our children as evangelists, but Zach shared Gods good news with Joyce that December afternoon; and she is still talking about it. Thats the way Gods good news is spread one person at a time. When one hears the good news, feels the joy inside and sees the joy of the one who shared with her, she cannot quit talking about it. The good news of God from Zach changed Joyces life! Way to go, Zach! Lets all follow the example of our children, as so simply and easily they share Gods good news with others. Gods peace for a blessed Lent, + Pr Tim

Exchange Disciples
The Northwestern Ohio Synod Mission Partners Ministry Team (MPMT) has set a goal to have a representative from a Mission Partner congregation attend worship every Sunday at Redeemer, Salem, and other struggling churches in the Synod. We are calling this program "Exchange Disciples". Your congregation has supported Redeemer in the past and I pray that you will continue this vital support this year. As the liaison between the MPMT and Redeemer, I am seeking persons, families, or groups to attend services at Redeemer. Redeemer is located at 1702 Upton Avenue (corner of Oakwood) in Toledo and Sunday worship begins at 10:30 am. Pastor Lori Strang leads an inspiring, uplifting service and your members will be revitalized by attending. We are suggesting that those who attend worship at Redeemer contribute the offering they would normally give to their "home" church on that particular Sunday to Redeemer, instead. It is important that members of Redeemer's Mission Partner congregations become involved and support the ministries of Redeemer. If you are aware of anyone in your congregation who would like to worship for one Sunday at Redeemer (or would like more information), please have them contact me by phone at 419-8745215 or email at iserprsn@bex.net to schedule a Sunday. I am currently scheduling through September, 2013. Please continue to pray for our Mission Partner recipient congregations and consider supporting Redeemer as "Exchange Disciples". God's Peace to you, Tom Iserman Zoar Lutheran Church Perrysburg, Ohio
