The Flaretot program is designed to solve flare network problems, either for revamp or new networks and addresses all possible conditions of flow likely in flare networks, (compressible, two-phase flashing flow & potential for sonic conditions at pipe exits). The thorough physical properties calculations ensure both accurate physical properties and thermodynamics. It includes criteria based piping selection using pipe classes to aid in accurate design even for study projects.
Comprehensive properties may be viewed using custom filters to display only sections of the network of interest, and pipe sizing parameters are included to facilitate sound engineering design. Data an be exported to spreadsheets.
Flowrate, pressure or temperature can be overlaid on the network drawing to give the user instant feedback on design problems or bottlenecks in the network.
Use is made of colour coding on the drawing to give additional feedback to the user, for eaxmple where data is lacking.
Engineering units are fully customisable to suit job preferences which helps prevent potential errors in data conversion for data entry or reporting.
CASE MANAGEMENT An unlimited number of case studies can be prepared within a single file using a logical grid to identify participating elements. Active sources contributing to flare loads are colour coded in the network window for clarity
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Liquid temperature dependent data (such as viscosity) can be calibrated with known data where available and data is presented in chart form to provide the user with an insight into the predicted data to help prevent inaccurate data entry.
Flaretot has a built in physical property calculator with 310 library components. Library components can be located easily using name/synonyms, formula or CAS number. The Peng-Robinson equation of state together with API methods for enthalpy are used to provide an realistic estimates of fluid properties and vapour liquid equilibria throughout the network. Further components can be added on request. Petroleum fractions and components not in the library can be defined as user components. The flexible user component designer allows the user to have full control over user component definition. Both Petro and Joback group contribution methods are provided and any combination of these methods can be used, including specification of any properties known.
The Joback group contribution method is presented in a clear diagrammatic form so that the user is clear on the group contributions.
VESSEL BLOWDOWN MODULE The blowdown module uses a rigorous component property and phase model combined with unsteady state wall and insulation heat conduction to predict conditions during vessel depressurising. Blowdown of vertical, horizontal and spherical vessels can be modelled. Rigorous restriction orifice flowrate calculations are used rather than generic pressure / flowrate equations so that simulated conditions are as realistic as possible. Both fire conditions and normal blowdown conditions are supported. A small library of metal and wall temperature dependent properties for the metal wall and insulation is provided to minimise data input required. Extensive feedback on the blowdown calculation is given in chart form to aid in reaching a viable solution with a minimum of complete and possibly unfeasible runs. Comprehensive output is given in chart and tabular form.
Metal wall stress calculations are included to allow a realistic assessment of possible wall rupture during blowdown. The wall stress calculated during blowdown is overlaid on the material allowable stress chart, so it is clear where allowable stress may be exceeded.
A library of allowable stress for various materials under ASME VIII Sect 1 is provided so that data input is minimised (but may be entered in tabular form if required).
MODULE FOR RADIATION EFFECTS ON STRUCTURAL STEEL This module predicts the temperature rise with time of a Required heat transfer coefficients and related air physical tubular structural steel element resulting from flare properties required are calculated internally so requiring a radiation. minimum of user input. A rigorous four quadrant model is used to calculate all aspects of heat transfer namely, radiant, conductive and convective (forced and natural convection). Full control over coefficient calculation choices is also provided to give maximum flexibility in meeting project or company standards of calculation.
Results are presented in both chart and comprehensive tabular form which includes calculated coefficients. PRODUCED NOISE MODULES There are three noise modules covering noise produced by flares, control valves and piping. RELIEF VALVE SIZING AND RELIEF LOAD MODULE The relief module comprises a number of templates for relief load / relief valve sizing based on a spreadsheet type input. These include fire, thermal expansion, gas blow-by and tube rupture. Multiple calculations may be maintained in a single network file.
KNOCK OUT DRUM SIZING MODULE The knockout drum sizing module allows sizing for both vertical and horizontal vessels. FLARE SYSTEM PURGE RATE MODULE The purge rate module allows required flare network purge rates to be calculated using 3 methods (Husa, Tan and alternative modified methods). PHYSICAL PROPERTY CALCULATOR MODULE The integral physical calculator module can also be used for a specific composition to perform a flash calculation and generate additional physical properties at a specified temperature and pressure. 17 mixture properties and 8 vapour / liquid properties are generated.
UNIT CONVERSION MODULE Aside from the ability to select custom units for the flare network, Flaretot also offers a unit conversion module covering conversion from a wide range of other units.
