Important information: For people importing cats or dogs to Byford on or before 18 March The Australian Government Department of Agriculture,

Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is ceasing the intake of animals to the Byford quarantine facility (Perth, Western Australia) until 31 May, 2013. This is because of the heightened and ongoing risk of bushfires in the surrounding area. Australias strong biosecurity system protects animal plant and human health, underpins the productivity of our primary industries and protects the environment. All cats and dogs being imported into Australia, either for the first time or returning, are required to meet Australian import conditions so that Australian people and animals arent exposed to potentially fatal diseases not currently present here, such as rabies. What do I do? Your travel plans, and the plans you have for your pet/s arrival in Australia, do not need to change. When your cat or dog arrives in Perth it will be redirected to the quarantine facility at Eastern Creek in Sydney. You dont have to do anything to facilitate this transfer. A specialist pet transport company has been engaged by DAFF to carry the animals safely and securely to Sydney. Can I redirect my pet/s to Sydney? Yes, if you would prefer to change your pet/s travel arrangements so that they fly directly to Sydney (instead of going via Perth) you can opt to do this at your own expense. If you choose to do this, you will need to:
1. Contact DAFF to confirm the change to flights and confirm when your pet/s are expected to arrive in Sydney 2. Have DAFF issue you with a Certificate of Equivalence for each import permit that you hold, This will change the required quarantine location from Byford to Eastern Creek, and 3. Change the flights with your airline or pet transport provider.

How will I collect my pet/s after quarantine? DAFF will transport your pet/s to Perth once the minimum 30 days or relevant period of quarantine stay in Sydney is complete. If you would like your pet/s transported to a location other than Perth, you can choose to arrange this at your own expense. Is this going to cost me more? This change to quarantine arrangements will not result in any additional costs. The fees that would otherwise be charged to you will continue to apply.

I wont be able to visit so how will I know if my cat or dog is okay? You can contact DAFF once your animal has arrived in Perth to find out how well they managed the trip. After your animal arrives at Eastern Creek, in Sydney, you will be contacted and provided with information about your pets wellbeing. You can contact the quarantine facility directly for updates during your animals stay. Once the minimum quarantine period has been completed we will be in contact again to arrange returning your animal to you. Can I rebooking into Byford for a later date? A decision about when to reopen the facility will be made closer to 31 May. We do not recommend that you change your pets planned travel dates to after 31 May as we cannot predetermine the decision about when the facility may reopen. Should you choose to cancel your current booking at Byford, we cannot provide assurance that you will be able to make a new booking at a time that suits you. Should the decision be made to reopen the Byford facility the relatively small capacity means it could be many months before space is available to accommodate your pet/s. If a booking is cancelled now, your permit will remain valid until its expiry date. But please note if you require a booking at a different quarantine facility (such as Eastern Creek or Spotswood) then your permit will need to be amended and a fee may apply. What about my exercise or grooming appointments You may have arranged for someone to exercise or groom your animal at Byford. We recommend you contact your provider to discuss options to transfer the delivery of these services to Eastern Creek. If you are unable to transfer these services and would like to arrange for them to be provided whilst at Eastern Creek, please contact Eastern Creek Quarantine Facility on (02) 8805 1000. I have more questions who can I talk to? If you require further information please call DAFF on 02 6272 4454 (international +61 2 6272 4454) during the Australian working hours of 9am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm (Eastern Daylight Savings Time).
