ALUMINUM IN JULY 2011

Domestic primary aluminum production in July 2011 was
171,000 metric tons (t), according to the U.S. Geological
Survey. The average daily production was 5,530 t, slightly
lower than that for the previous month but 17% higher than that
for July 2010.
Total aluminum recovered from scrap in July 2011 was
257,000 t, slightly lower than that in the previous month but
12% higher than the total in July 2010. Of this, 136,000 t of
aluminum was recovered from new scrap, slightly lower than
the amount in the previous month but 3% higher than that in
July 2010. Aluminum recovered from old scrap in July 2011
totaled 121,000 t, which was slightly lower than that in June but
23% higher than the amount in July 2010.

and imports of scrap increased by 15% compared with those for

the same period in 2010. Canada remained the leading shipper
of materials to the United States, supplying 60% of total U.S.
imports in the first 6 months of the year, followed by the United
Arab Emirates and Russia with 6% each.
Total aluminum exports (table 9) for the first half of 2011
increased by 14% compared with those for the first 6 months of
2010. Exports of metal and alloys increased by 28%, exports of
semifabricated material increased by 15%, and aluminum scrap
exports increased by 11% compared with the amount exported
in the first half of 2010. China, Mexico, and Canada, in
descending order of shipments, were the major recipients of
U.S. exports in the first 6 months of 2010.

U.S. Trade
Total imports for consumption (table 8) for the first 6 months
of 2011 decreased by 2% compared with those for the same
period in 2010. Imports of metal and alloys increased by 2%
whereas imports of semifabricated materials decreased by 19%,

Update
In July, the monthly average U.S. market price of primary
aluminum ingot fell to $1.216 per pound from $1.244 per pound
in June. The 4-month downward trend continued in August,
with the average monthly price falling to $1.166 per pound.
