July 17th August 6th, 2011 Monday-Friday 1.15-2.45 Instructors: Erica Moretti, Elena Daniele COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS: Italian 1 is an intensive introductory course to the Italian language and culture. The aim of the course is to develop basic communicative competence in the Italian language that is, to enable students to interact using language that is both grammatically correct and appropriate to the situation. The course develops proficiency in basic communicative functions (asking for and giving information, socializing, expressing likes and dislikes, etc.), as well as in extended functions (narrating, expressing emotions, uncertainty, opinions). The course also begins to develop elementary skills in listening, reading and writing through exposure to authentic materials (i.e. newspaper ads, short articles, movie clips, songs). Classroom activities are devoted to practicing grammar structures in meaningful situations and contexts, with students working in pairs or groups. The lessons emphasize a highly participatory and communicative approach, and are organized primarily around role-playing and interactive situational exercises. Ancillary activities (i.e. a visit to the local gelateria) are a substantial component of the course: they help students integrate the information covered in the class meetings into real-life situations and aim to facilitate and encourage interaction in the foreign language. Final assessment of the students progress will address their ability to demonstrate the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing,) while performing in meaningful, contextualized. Students are tested regularly with a quiz at the end of each week of class, and a final exam at the end of the course. At the end of the course, students will be asked to fill out a final evaluation of the course, and will also receive a report on their own class performances. STUDENT OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, students will be able to: Provide basic information in Italian about themselves, their city, their classmates, their family, friends, hobbies, and daily activities.
