Khatam Sharif

(as) Sayyiduna Isa ibn Maryam

Jesus
"Make known to My servants that which you have verified of My generosity... Why do My servants despair of My Mercy when My Mercy embraces everything?"

Introduction
Sayyiduna Isa ibn Maryam (as) always emanated hope. However, the people of that time of were not so different from the people of today, as they were miserable and discontent with their lives. The so called religious men were so detached from reality that they would make the common person feel that religious piety was very hard to reach, and only the chosen ones could truly attain it. Religion had become so strict and forceful that the ordinary person would want nothing to do with it; but because Sayyiduna Isas (as) approach was so warm and welcoming, he gave all the opportunity to make amends and seek spirituality. Indeed, he was the Messenger of Hope. Due to his station of hope (raja), Sayyiduna Isa (as) changed peoples lives and gave them this hope. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And when he finds it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say to you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety-nine pious persons, which need no repentance. Sayyiduna Isa (as) explains that when one lost soul is saved from damnation, the rejoicing in heaven is far greater, than that of the worship of ninety-nine pious people.

The Prodigal Son

There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, Father give me the share of this property, which belongs to me. So he divided the property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son, treat me like one of your hired hands. So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still a far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his slaves, Quickly, bring out a robe--the best one--and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. And with this they began their celebrations. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has returned safe and sound. He then became very angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes; you killed the fatted calf for him! Then the father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.
(Luke 15:11-3)

In this parable of Sayyiduna Isa (as), the father represents Allah almighty, the elder son a pious servant who stays on the right path, and the younger a sinful person who has lost his way. We are like the younger son, who have lost our way and defy our Creator by burdening our souls in every moment of our lives through constant sin. However, just like the young man who came to realise that there was nobody he could turn to apart from his father, we too must turn to the One who can forgive us.

Rasulullah (S) said, Allah almighty says, O son of Adam! I forgive you as long as you pray to Me and have hope for My forgiveness, whatever sins you have committed. O son of Adam, I do not care if your sins reach to the heights of heaven and then you ask Me for forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, if you were to come to me with sins equivalent in weight to the whole earth and then meet Me having not associated anything with Me, I would come to you with the same amount of forgiveness.

His Noble Ancestors

Sayyiduna Isas (as) grandmother was a pious woman: Remember when the wife of Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed to You that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. You, only You are the Hearer, the Knower. And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! I am delivered of a female -Allah knows best what she was delivered- the male is not as the female: and I have named her Maryam and I crave Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan the outcast.
(al-Quran)

She was advised to fulfil her vow and take her daughter to the temple of David. When this news spread, everyone wanted to take care of Sayyidah Maryam (as) and become her guardian. So it was decided that each would throw their metal pens into water, and whoevers pen would float, he would be entitled to look after this holy child. Three times the pens were thrown, and each time Sayyiduna Zakriyyas (as) pen floated, whilst all others sank. Sayyiduna Zakriyya (as) took Sayyidah Maryam (as) to a special room in the temple. This room had a single stair case to which only he had access to. She had all the facilities provided for her and her needs were taken care of, so that she could dedicate all her time to worship; and furthermore to clean and upkeep the temple when it was her turn to do so. Such was her piety that people started referring to her as an example to each other. Whenever Sayyiduna Zakriyya (as) visited the room he would notice fresh fruits and food laid out for her. As no one could enter this chamber, he asked, O Maryam! From where comes to you this (food)? She replied, It is from Allah. Allah gives without limit to whom He wills. (al-Quran)

His Blessed Mother and the Miraculous Birth

And when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah hath chosen thee and made thee pure, and hath preferred thee above (all) the women of creation. O Mary! Be obedient to thy Lord, prostrate thyself and bow with those who bow (in worship). (And remember) when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a word from him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (unto Allah. He will speak unto mankind in his cradle and in his manhood, and he is of the righteous. She said: My Lord! How can I have a child when no mortal hath touched me?
Compiled By: Sajid Hussain and Abdal Majid 14th August 2008 Page: 3 of 11

He said: So (it will be). Allah createth what He will. If He decreeth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is. One day as Sayyidah Maryam (as) had taken a bath in her chamber, she was shocked to see a young man standing, and said, I seek refuge in the Most Gracious Allah from you, if you fear Him. Do not be afraid, I am a messenger sent by your Lord, replied Sayyiduna Jibrail (as), and by His command I am here to grant you a righteous child. Sayyidah Maryam (as) asked how this could be possible as no man had touched her, I am not from a bad family, nor am I unchaste, how then can I conceive a child? After explaining that this was the Divine decree and was preordained, Sayyiduna Jibrail (as) blew his blessed breath upon Sayyidah Maryam (as), and she became pregnant. During her pregnancy she left the temple and went to an isolated place. Hadrat Yusuf anNajjar , a pious man and Sayyidah Maryams (as) cousin would look after her and care for her during this time. He once asked, O Maryam (as), just tell me this, you say this is how it happened, but how can a tree grow without seed? And who is it that planted the first seed? she enquired. Whilst contemplating this, he asked, Will a child be born without a man? She replied, Did not Allah create Adam (as) without man or woman? With these responses Hadrat Yusuf an-Najjar realised that not everything is in accordance to human intellect. He is the Almighty and can create without any conditions imposed on Him. So he apologised, Forgive me for I did not mean to doubt your word. I have known you since childhood and you have always been so pious, but everybody is finding it difficult to understand this matter. During the appointed time, she went through all the pains attributed with child birth, such was her suffering that she prayed, O Lord, I wish I was dead, I wish I did not exist! Out of sheer agony she looked for some support and found a dead date tree, and at this time Sayyiduna Jibrail (as) appeared before her and said, Touch this tree and Allah almighty will make it give fruit. Doing as she was advised fresh dates began dropping from the tree, which she ate, and water gushed forth from where she sat on the floor, which she drank. Sayyiduna Jibrail (as) then comforted her, Allah almighty will grant you this beautiful child, and once you have this child, you will have so much happiness. After this Sayyiduna Isa (as) was born. Rasulullah (S) said that no child is born without this interference of the Devil, with the exception of Sayyiduna Isa (as) and his mother. This is because of the dua of Sayyidah Maryams (as) mother, when she prayed, O Allah, protect my child and her offspring from the influence of Satan.

It is for this reason that the Devil did not succeed in influencing either of them throughout their lives, therefore Sayyiduna Isa (as) was of angelic purity. This meant that from the power of his spirituality, one glance, or the smallest of association with him, would unlock hearts. For forty days Sayyidah Maryam (as) stayed away from people and remained in isolation, and after which she wrapped her blessed baby and went into the town. Upon seeing her, many gathered and said, O Maryam (as), what have you done, your parents were not bad people! She did not reply and instead did what was told by Sayyiduna Jibrail (as). Whilst indicating she was keeping a fast of silence, she pointed to Sayyiduna Isa (as), hence telling them to question him. The people got angry as they truly loved and honoured Sayyidah Maryam (as). They shouted how it was possible for a child of forty days to speak. As soon as they uttered these words, Sayyiduna Isa (as) spoke to defend his mother: He (Jesus) spoke: I am the slave of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and has made me a Prophet, and he made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive. And (has made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and has not made me arrogant, unblessed. Peace on the day I was born and the day I die and the day I shall be raised alive.
(al-Quran)

Messenger of Hope
All who desire Allah almighty have a station (maqam), including the Prophets and the saints (awliya), and it is with these stations whereby each individual seeks Him. Data sahib explains that in each of these stations there is guidance (hidayat) for people. For instance the maqam of Sayyiduna Adam (as) was tawbah, as he spent his life in repentance. Zuhd, renunciation of duniya was the station of Sayyiduna Nuh (as). For Sayyiduna Musa (as) it was inaba, to return to Him; huzn, sorrow for Sayyiduna Daud (as) and khawf, fear for Sayyiduna Yahya (as). The maqam of Sayyiduna Isa ibn Maryam (as) is raja, hope. One day the two Prophets met and Sayyiduna Yahya (as) said to Sayyiduna Isa (as), Do you not have fear from being cut off from Allah almighty? Sayyiduna Isa (as) replied, O Yahya (as), do you not have hope in Allahs Mercy? Neither your fear nor my hope will change destiny, as both of these are states from Allah almighty and this is our purpose. Spiritual states affect both people and their surroundings. If one is in the state of depression, then he will show this condition in his conduct. Likewise if the state is of hope, then this will be portrayed in both words and actions. Sayyiduna Isas (as) maqam is of raja and Sayyiduna Yahyas (as) is qabdh. When a person is in the state of raja he is jolly and can see positive in anything, he is in the state of bast. In this state he will see the glass as half full, as no matter what the situation he will always see Allah almightys favours upon him. The state of qabdh is when the person is fearful and feels contracted. Both of these states are spiritual maqams, and different awliya have different states according to which Prophet they are under the guidance of.

Stories of Hope
Once a woman was accused of having committed adultery, and according to the law of the previous books, the punishment was to stone her to death. Acknowledging the soft and gentle nature of Sayyiduna Isa (as), the Jews brought the case to him and asked what should be done. They were expecting Sayyiduna Isa (as) to show compassion and forgiveness by ordering the release of the woman, and from this they would accuse him of denying the previous laws, and so spread fitna in the community. However, Sayyiduna Isa (as) said, Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Sayyiduna Isas (as) judgment silenced all the Jews as they hung their heads in shame and walked away. The woman, who was expecting a sure death sentence without any doubt, was bewildered with this outcome. Sayyiduna Isa (as) approached her and said, Go daughter, and sin no more. Once as Sayyiduna Isa (as) was on a journey, he was accompanied by two men; one was renowned for his piety, whilst the other for his sins. As they travelled the sinner continuously prayed, O my Lord, I know I am not worthy but I seek your forgiveness and repent from my sins. The pious man prayed, O Allah, dont make me like this sinner and keep me away from him. I pray not to even see his face in the hereafter. After hearing these prayers, Allah almighty revealed to Sayyiduna Isa (as) that he had accepted both duas. He had forgiven the sinner and granted him Paradise due to his humility and from the hope he placed in his Lord. He also accepted the arrogant mans prayer and condemned him. Hope in His mercy is the light that expels darkness. Shaykh Fariduddin Attar once said that hope is born from despair. So before the actual state of hope is achieved, the person concerned will despair over his sins. Once a bazurg made a particular mistake and was told by Allah almighty to stay away from His house. Worried, he spent more time in the mosque, and did more ibadat and performed many nafl prayers, but again he heard the same voice tell him to leave. The bazurg hung his head in shame and prayed more and more for forgiveness, but still heard an angry voice for the third time say, Leave this place of worship! You are not welcome here! To rest his mind he walked out of the mosque, where he witnessed a mother slap her child and scold him, You good for nothing foolish child... The child ran from his mother and sat on the stairs where he eventually cried himself to sleep. Upon seeing her child sleeping, the mother embraced him, kissed him and wiped his tears. Immediately the bazurg went back inside the mosque and fell into prostration, and again he heard the voice, Why are you here, you were told that you are not wanted! O Allah, where else can I go...whom can I turn to apart from You? You alone can forgive me, for You are the all Merciful. wept the bazurg. Allah almighty was pleased with his humility and the hope he had in Him, and so forgave him.

A person will only ask for forgiveness from someone whom he knows has it in their power to forgive. So when a servant prays for forgiveness he is in fact declaring to himself and to his Lord, O Lord! You are the Master, and I am Your mere servant. With this repentance he will acknowledge that ultimately nobody can forgive him apart from Allah almighty. Once this humility is instilled into his heart, hope in His mercy will become manifested. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra heard from Rasulullah (S) that Allahs mercy has one hundred parts. He has kept ninety-nine parts with Himself, and bestowed the one remaining part on His creation. It is by this one part that mankind, jinn, beasts and insects show affection and mercy to each other. It is also from this one part that mothers show mercy and affection to their children. If this is the magnitude of that one part, then one cannot fathom the extent of the remaining ninety-nine, which Allah almighty will shower upon His creation on the Day of Judgement. Even though we know that Allah almightys mercy overwhelms His wrath, we still transgress against Him, and He continues to forgive us. In a hadith Qudsi Rasulullah (S) said, "A slave did a wrong action and said, 'O Allah, forgive me my wrong action! Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said, 'My slave committed a wrong action and then acknowledged that he had a Lord who forgives and punishes wrong actions. The slave again committed a wrong action and said, 'O Lord, forgive me my wrong action. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said, 'My slave committed a wrong action and then acknowledged that he had a Lord who forgives and punishes wrong actions. I have forgiven My slave so let him do what he likes. It is said that when a person does wrong knowing full well that he is sinning, he will feel remorse and discontentment. It is at this time that he is closest to Allah almighty; as at some level he is thinking of Him. From the shame of the transgression and hope in His mercy, change will then take place in that persons behaviour for him to leave sin. Some years ago a well known belly dancer in Cairo suddenly gave up her profession; asked why she had done this, she replied, One evening as I slept, I saw myself dressed in a provocative outfit in the presence of Rasulullah (S). I was so embarrassed; he threw his blessed cloak over me, with which I covered myself. I swear by God, I will never take that cloak off now! Rasulullah (S) saved me and I am not going to put myself in hellfire after this. Many laughed and teased her, but she remained steadfast as her repentance was sincere and she continued to do good deeds to cover her past sins. A man came to Rasulullah (S) and said: Ya Rasulullah (S), I have committed a grave sin please help me. At that time an ayah was revealed where Allah almighty said, Establish salah at each end of the day and in the first part of the night. Good actions eradicate bad actions. This is a reminder for people who pay heed. The man asked, "Ya Rasulullah (S), is this ayah only for me, that Allah almighty has forgiven my sins if I pray?

Rasulullah (S) replied that this glad tiding was for all his ummah; if they sin and repent with good deeds and prayers, Allah almighty will change their bad actions into good ones. When speaking about sin, Rasulullah (S) said, "By the One in whose hand my life is, if you had not sinned, Allah would have removed you and brought other people who did commit wrong actions and asked for the forgiveness of Allah Almighty so that He could forgive them." If there were no sinners in the world, it would be destroyed and replaced with people who would sin and then ask for forgiveness. This is because only after sinning one will ask for forgiveness, and His mercy will only come through this forgiveness. Shaykh Ibrahim bin Adham had a desire to perform the circumambulation of the holy Kaba alone, and after waiting patiently for many years, his dua was accepted. A storm came and everyone left the haram sharif for shelter, leaving the Shaykh alone. When I went into tawaf I made the following dua, O Allah, protect me from sin, and I heard a Divine voice say, O ibn Adham, you are asking for protection from sin, if everyone asks for protection from sin, who then will I forgive? Whilst sitting near to the holy Kaba, a Sahabi was told that Allah almighty will take account of how each person has lived their life. Upon hearing this he replied, Fair enough, we must give our accounts as we are His servants, but Allah almighty must also give His account to us! Shocked with this bold statement the bystanders asked, What are you saying, how can you hold Allah almighty accountable to anything, He is our Lord and Creator! Let us be fair about this, we will go to him with many sins and will have to answer for them, replied the Sahabi, but let us see if our sins are greater than His Mercy. After this event Sayyiduna Jibrail (as) came with a revelation that Allah almighty is saying that He is enjoying the conversation of this Sahabi. We are sinners, but we are fortunate sinners.
Shah-e-Naqshband

Sayyiduna Muaz bin Jabal narrates that one day whilst riding with Rasulullah (S) he was called three times. After the third time Rasulullah (S) said, 'There is no one who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, sincerely from his heart, without Allah making it unlawful for the Fire to touch him. After hearing such glad tidings, Sayyiduna Muaz asked permission if he could tell the people, so that they may rejoice. Rasulullah (S) said not to as the people will become reliant upon this. At every moment of our lives we are given opportunities to repent from our wicked ways and take from this mercy. The Khwajagan masters say that Allah almightys mercy is always on the lookout; all we need to do is recognise it and take from it. When afflicted with illness, poverty, or a break down of all that is dear to us, we begin to feel like, why me, what have I done to deserve this. What we fail to realise is that this too is in fact a part of this mercy, preparing us for death. Just like a Shepherd who uses his staff to guide his sheep on the path, these tribulations are used to keep us safe on ours.

So this is why we are taught to ask for forgiveness from our transgressions and gain qualities such as humility, shame, remorse, regret etc, all which lead to hope in His mercy.

Beauty in All
Whilst walking with his followers, Sayyiduna Isa (as) saw a carcass of a dead dog, which was giving off a foul stench. Everyone sped up their pace and covered their noses in order to pass by quicker; Sayyiduna Isa (as) stopped and smiled. O Master, what is there to admire about this filthy carcass? asked his disciples. Sayyiduna Isa (as) replied, I was looking and wondering at how beautiful and clean teeth it has. Bewildered with this response they asked, Master, why is it you always say something positive about the worst of situations? Sayyiduna Isa (as) replied, Whatever is in the heart, it will come to the tongue.

Means of Salvation
One day Sayyiduna Isa (as) was seen leaving the house of a prostitute, O spirit of Allah, this is not a place befitting you, what could have happened that you ended up here? asked the people. He replied, Last night I was unable to sleep, I got up and started walking towards the mountain to offer my prayers; but the path became blurred and I ended up at her house. That night when this woman saw Sayyiduna Isa (as) she felt an overwhelming sense of shame, and fell at his blessed feet and repented from her wicked ways. Later when speaking of this incident, Sayyiduna Isa (as) said that a revelation had come telling him that the reason Allah almighty made that place obscure to him, was because He wanted to save this woman and it was through Sayyiduna Isa (as) that she would be saved.

Spiritual Poverty
Sayyiduna Isa (as) lived in total poverty, he did not posses anything, he never built a house nor had any property. He was in this world and yet not of it. Sayyiduna Isas (as) sole possession in this world was a drinking cup. One day he witnessed a person drinking water using his hands, and as soon as he saw this he threw away that cup.

Building Mansions
Some followers asked Sayyiduna Isa (as), O Master, we want to build a house for you, where would you command us to build it? Sayyiduna Isa (as) said that was a good idea and they should follow him to see his plot. After walking towards the sea shore he pointed to the middle of the sea and said, Build it there.

Travels
Someone asked Sayyiduna Isa (as), O Master, why are you always travelling, why is it you do not settle anywhere?

Compiled By: Sajid Hussain and Abdal Majid 14th August 2008

Sayyiduna Isa (as) replied, My intention is that maybe at some point throughout this journey I will step on a place where a saint of Allah had put his foot, and from this I hope that Allah almighty will forgive me as I will be following in the footsteps of the holy people.

No Shelter?
One day Sayyiduna Isa (as) was walking through a forest when due to a heavy thunderstorm, it began to rain. He ran to seek shelter in a cave only to find an animal had given birth to its cubs. He left this cave to look for another, but no matter what cave he tried, they were all occupied. He looked up towards the heavens and said, Is there no shelter for the son of man? Allah almighty then spoke to him, O ibn Maryam, are you not happy that I am your shelter? Sayyiduna Isa (as) replied, O my Lord, most certainly I am happy with that.

Good News: The Hope

And when Jesus, son of Mary said: O children of Israel, surely I am Messenger of God to you, verifying that which was revealed before me in the Torah, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger who shall come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.
(al-Quran)

Sayyiduna Isa (as) came to reaffirm the Torah and to bring the Injil, which translates as good news. However, this revelation was not the only glad tiding, as the hope Sayyiduna Isa (as) was speaking about was of another Prophet that would come after him, who would be known as, Ahmad (S). Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the "Comforter" will not come unto you.
(John 16:7)

Every Prophet made a convent with Allah to support Rasulullah (S) should he come in their time; and it was their duty to teach their people that there is no God but Allah, and that there is life after death. No other Prophet could specify when the last Prophet would come with the exception of Sayyiduna Isa (as), who clearly said that after him, the best of creation would come. All Prophets understand the true reality of Rasulullahs (S) maqam, and are therefore forever seeking nearness to take from him. They have done their duty and fulfilled their obligation, but in terms of closeness to Allah almighty, something is not reached. Sayyiduna Musa (as) was perfect in his own capacity, but that perfection was beautified through Rasulullah (S). When a seeker walks the path towards Allah almighty he eventually reaches his maqam, upon which he returns and assists another to make the same journey to reach perfection. Rasulullah (S) is perfect, therefore all Prophets know that for them to achieve their states, they need Rasulullah (S), as only through his tawajjuh they will be taken to the epitome of their maqams. During the Miraj sharif when all the Prophets met, prayed behind and spoke with Rasulullah (S), they were being given something that would remove the veils and take them to these levels. Sayyiduna Isa (as) is a living Prophet and so to reach the pinnacle of his maqam of raja he will return to achieve it through Rasulullah (S).

More Good News

It is the practice of Rasulullah (S) to repay goodness with goodness, so because Sayyiduna Isa (as) gave the glad tidings of the coming of Rasulullah (S), Rasulullah (S) gives us the news of the coming of Sayyiduna Isa (as). He said, I am worthier of Jesus than others, because there was no Prophet between me and him. He will come down from the heaven, and when you see him you will recognise him. In another Hadith sharif Rasulullah (S) said, Know that between me and him there is no Prophet or Rasul, except that he is my caliph in my Ummah after me. Rasulullah (S) said, I swear by Him in whose hand my life is, that Sayyiduna Isa (as) will descend and he come and stand near my grave and says, O Muhammad, and I will answer his greeting We were with Rasulullah (S) when we saw a hailstorm and a hand appeared. We enquired about it, and he said, Did you see it. We said, Yes. He said, That was Isa ibn Maryam who came to greet me. We were doing tawaf around the Kaba with Rasulullah (S) when he shook hand with someone which we could not see. We mentioned it to him and he said, That was my brother, Isa ibn Maryam; I waited until he finished his tawaf and then greeted him. Without a doubt Allah will send Isa ibn Maryam as a fair ruler and just leader and he will take the road to Mina (near Makkah) for Hajj or Umrah, and then he will stop at my grave and send salutations upon me and I shall return his greeting.

The Final Hope

Rasulullah (S) said, How can a nation perish when I am the first and Isa ibn Maryam is the last.
