5th World Youth Congress on Youth and Development Istanbul, Turkye

Usuario

2010

The following Handbook has put together action projects that attack different problems that young people face in their communities all around Latin America.

The purpose of this document is to gather specific projects that the youth community that attended the 5th youth congress in Istanbul is already working in each of their countries, or heard about its existence and effectiveness.

Its in our hope that this Handbook would become a platform for networking and sharing problems and solution in similar areas of interest and conflict. And become a network that may strength Latin America as a region working on projects tackling the achievement of the MDGs.

We would also hope that this Handbook can become a mean to inspire young people worldwide that could replicate and adapt some of these successful projects and implement them in their countries.

With hope,

Latin-American delegates for the 5th World Youth Congress

OBJECTIVES:

Generate in young people full awareness of their citizenship, educating and training them in the knowledge and realization of that, as well as encouraging their active participation in society through concrete instances of action.

DESCRIPTION
Chilhood Citizenship Project (PCI) is an educative Project carried on by OAJNU- in Salta city, whose beneficiaries are school students from 12 to 16 years old from Salta. The aim of this Project is to encourage young people to participate in their communities, through giving them participation tools and spaces where they can feel themselves as change agents. We provide them some knowledge about Human Rights and Civic Participation so that they can detect a necessity in their communities and suggest alternative solutions which tend to solve or improve the problem. Thats the reason our Project is innovate, the children are who determines what theyre going to do. This means that, after some workshops at school given by OAJNUs volunteers, children carry out a social action project in their own communities (school, neighborhoods, so on). In general the fields covered by the childrens projects are varied; some of them work in promoting a better public transport condition and a kinder treat in school, eliminating discrimination; others work with the environment and Young mothers, so on. In Salta, we finished the Project (2009 edition) in October 2009 and almost 450 children from 9 school took part in it. Through the topic of HR, which is transverse, we think that were promoting the UN development goals, or at least we make them known; as a first step so that our participants can start doing something, which is the essence of our Project. The same project is carried on in other Argentinean cities where OAJNU takes place, like Buenos Aires, Rosario, Cordoba, Mendoza and Corrientes. PCI has been declared GOOD PRACTICE by UN-HABITAT in 2009.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

People can help us and themselves by PARTICIPATING! Not being quiet at home. Everybody needs to start thinking in others, doing something in order to improve our lives quality. As well as that, firms and companies can contribute with funds in order to help to afford our activities, but the most important thing is to help to support children initiatives; too much time happens that children have incredible ideas but they do not have enough resources to carry them on.

Improve the life quality of the people who obtain their livelihood selling recyclable wastes and those who live near landfills.

DESCRIPTION
M.I.R.A (integrated waste management for the environment) was founded in April 2008 by environmental sciences undergraduate students and a professor who was worried about the residues the Agronomy College produce. For that reason, we started to promote inside a separated wastes disposal there and by September of the same year we achieve our first objective, all the institution was classifying their residues a nd we were giving three cubic meters per week of them to a recuperators cooperative. Therefore, we decided to extend our project to the community and we started to dispose an informative stand on weekends at our College campus, which is a public park, a nd to give classes at kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. This year and the next we expect to replicate our project in other Colleges of Buenos Aires University and in another Universities which are interested in implementing a project like ours and we also start to work with a recuperartors cooperative to help them get in contact with neighbors.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

People from all over the world can help us trying to implement our project in their community and make it their own project, we think it is the best way to achieve a better wastes management all over the world and make the wastes problem disappear or reduce it as much as possible. It is also important to promote it, in that way more people will know what we do, that it is very easy and that they can do it too.

COUNTRY:

BRASIL

YEAR: 2008

OBJECTIVES:

Forming more sensitive subjects, comprehending both creativity and development of attachment as essentials for the production of care. Develop a study on how art affects the formation of health professionals who are willing to voluntarily participate in the workshops proposed in a space named Laboratory of Sensitivities, a scenario experiment with languages poorly developed in academic institutions.

DESCRIPTION
This research began with questions and inquiries such as how the social values and the social structure in which we live produce different modes of care and hierarchical relations among subjects. We have understood that it is emerging a more sensitive health education and from that, we asked: "what are the scenarios which could improve the sensitivity, creativity of the future health professional?. From this, five workshops were held in a way to develop sensitivities in these five aspects: looking, listening, body movement, creativity and teamwork. These aspects were considered important in both production of c are and subjectivities. This project took place in a space among the classrooms, created by students and teachers called "Laboratory of Sensitivities." It is open to all university and community. With this experience we could make a bigger discussion abou t spaces where education is conceived, and realize the importance of exercising subjective displacements and relationships based on sensitivity among subjects. The concept of health by OMS was then questioned, and health was understood as openness to risk, creating perceptions and affections. The plans in the coming future is making a deeper discussion about these spaces of health education and especially the role of the university, and the role of student at the University as subjects on their own learning process which must also be political. If we want to transform health care, we must begin by health education, and for this it is necessary to understand what kind of interventions and practices have been made. Art has been a very fertile field for us to draw this kind of discussion and articulation, as it allows the displacement, the recreation and invention all the time, something that is largely muffled by capitalism structure. We did the workshops not as a therapeutic tool, what has been already studied, but as a political space.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

Everyone who is studying and conducting practices related to the role of university in the world, and university education and art, can help me sharing their experiences and allowing me to participate in their practices. Giving me suggestion and literature related to this subject and also promoting this discussion in their countries.

Provide economical lighting solutions through renewable energy and efficient systems to rural communities in Mexico

OBJECTIVES:

Promote the involvement of university students in rural communities, spark new growth and productive projects in these communities and revolutionize social schemes when working with communities in Mexico.

DESCRIPTION
Ilumxico is a rural electrification project through solar energy. It started due to the urgent need of young engineers to become involved in promoting climate change solutions and community development. The project started in August 2009 due to the alliance between two student driven companies (BitBang and ERES). We designed an efficient and economical lighting system with solar energy basing ourselves in principles of Bottom of the Pyramid design and strategies. We developed the electronic control device and assemble the system, our goal is to accompany electrification efforts with a important and integral social scheme which includes micro -credits, finding local entrepreneurs and making the beneficiaries agents of their own change. We have undergone man y testing stages to deliver a working prototype and are now in a phase of implementing our pilot projects and seek to involve many local players: NGO's, Government and the private sector in the development of this project to have a growing impact and soon be installing systems throughout Mexico and Latin America. We have won three different awards and contests. In February10 we were awarded first prize (out of 418) in the Santander Prize for Innovations with Social Impact, In April 2010 we were selected for the Ashoka Avancemos (Ashoka Youth Venture Program) and later that month were selected in the DF Genera process, which chose 10 companies with benefits for Mexico City (out of 210).

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

There are many ways that the project can be helped. We have various schemes and forms of cooperation and collaboration. If you live in Mexico, we have a Social Service program with universities which you can subscribe our project in and fulfill your obligatory 480 hours with us. Volunteers are always accepted and we gratefully accept any kind of volunteers from all over the world to help us work in community building activities and distribution of solar systems in rural areas. Any form of donations are very well received, eith er in technical assistance, equipment or donating money or offering promotion for our project. How did you come up with this idea (motivation source)? My motivation is in my country people, because I cannot believe that a country with too many natural resources as Mexico is not one of the best countries because of the Mexican people that conforms with being just good and do not make an extra effort to be the best. How did you start the project? We start with little courses about leadership in high schools, asking support to the principals and to some organisms of the government but the most engage were the society that is asking this change in the young Mexican people. Describe the process and the way you achieved your goals. The process is slow and in the way a lot of boys and girls stay. After they realized of this commitment, comes the part of a new education in values and principles that we provide in a leadership schools of 4 months. Finally after the leadership school they have to develop a project and improve it so the boys and girls show to themselves that they can make a difference for a better Mexico. We divided the work in different areas because of the finally projec ts. Also there is a specific team focus in the leadership school so they bring the best conferences for the boys and girls. OBJECTIVES:

To promote cultural diversity, mutual understanding and identity values among young learners, through an education programme that will provide them with a wider appreciation of their past, in order to help children to understand, value, and enjoy th eir cultural environs so that they will become custodians of their own heritage.

DESCRIPTION
In May 2004, after years of efforts from researchers and local members of the community and thanks to the local authorities, the Sicarigua Community Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. The Museum is located in a rural community in the northwest of Venezuela, in Lara State; its collection includes a variety of archaeological materials from the region dating from pre-Hispanic times. The Museum has become a place for knowledge sharing and a proud spot for the members of the local community. In order to use the collection as a tool for understanding local history, a preliminary educational program has been developed for chi ldren between the ages of 6 and 12. The methodology emphasizes a cycle of learning: Understand Value Enjoy Care. Since the program began in August 2007 children from the community have participated in hands on educational activities including the study and accessioning of archaeological materials and participating in an actual archaeological community excavation. By the end of the program, they used proper archaeological terminology, understood the basis of timelines and chronology, and were able to classify petroglyphs according to their morphology. The goal has been to help children to understand, value, and enjoy their cultural environs so that they will become custodians of their own heritage. Today, the conservation of our cultural heritage faces many threats: pollution, war, political conflicts among others, however our biggest treat of all is ignorance. Hence, the best way to preserve our heritage is through education and community participation; making all those who for many years were told to keep out, take part in a hands on experience. Objects (finds) from an archaeological collection can help provide a stimulating starting point for creative responses and an environment for children to learn and think on their own. Objects can further the cultural and natural worlds, both past and present, creating greater awareness and appreciation of people from other cultures and the changing world we all inhabit.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

We hope this project serves as inspiration for archaeological investigations and that in the future they are develop with an integrated approach of social participation and inclusion. So the best way to help us is by promoting among your local communities a sense of social responsibility. Coming up with innovative and sustainable solutions is an essential part of any management plan, where not only academic researchers should be the center of attention, but most important of all, the community as a whole.

DESCRIPTION
The idea of found the centre was born on 2009 when one of us contacted Diego Ruvalcaba, a Mexican prospectivist. He came to Peru and motivated us to learn more about this new discipline. We started by promoting inside our university the importance of propective and making some free and paid curses to all the students. Prospectivist from other countries helped us in this stage. In June, 2009 we offered a curse in our university which was t he first of many more. The most important thing in this stage was introduce basic knowledge to all the students interested. We have been working hand by hand with the academic department of business administration inside the university, it make it easier to go on with our activities such promoting the work we do. By now we are planning activities for the following year. We are a group of 5 students from different careers, indirectly more than 15 students work with us. In September here in Peru will be a Co ngress of prospective in which we are planning to participate. Then we will be starting some investigations in prospective using the knowledge we gain in these two years.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

Some prospectivist from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, etc helped us with free classes and motivating our work. People like them are always needed when projects are ideas. But in order to improve our abilities we should study in others countries but we cant afford that. Sustainable Roof

WEB LINK:

talentoyemprendimiento.blogspot.com

COUNTRY: PERU

YEAR: 2010

OBJECTIVES:

Reduce global warming and contribute to environmental preservation. Improve the life quality of beneficiary communities through the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices.

DESCRIPTION
Sustainable Roof is a project that aims to contribute to the environment preservation through volunteer work of young people. The project has two main programs: White roof and Green roof. Nowadays, we are only working on the White roof program, which consists on white painting roofs of poor communities in Peru. We look forward to preserve the environment by reflecting solar radiation back into the space and reducing the global heat thanks to the white painting. At the same time, the beneficiary communi ties will experience more controlled temperatures inside their houses and will receive sustainable practices lessons. The original idea was created by Steven Chu, United States Secretary of Energy. According to him, changing surface colors of all the roofs and streets around the world would save the equivalent of removing all the cars from the road for 11 years. Since theres already a similar project in the Andean Mountains, we decided to be the first to bring the project to the city in Peru. We started Sustainable Roof almost a year ago, when we began searching for information and recruiting the volunteers for the project from different universities. Once we had the project established, we presented it to several organizations and contests. For example, the project was presented in the Global Engagement Summit organized by the University of Northwestern. It was chosen as one of the 15 finalists to participate in the GES Challenge on the Global Giving website. More on, it has agreed an alliance with Zuvy, Corporacin AVINA, Per 2021, 350 and Universidad del Pacfico. After this we did a pilot scheme of the project in the community of Pamplona Alta. With positive results we visited different corporations and exposed the project looking for sponsors. Were just about to finish this phase and will start th the execution of the project on October 10 .

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

Since we dont have the sufficient economic resources we ask people interested in preserving the environment from all over the world to help us, whether its through a donation or an alliance. We truly believe that making alliances between organizations can really help them to grow and get what each one of them needs independently. More on, we would be really thankful if everyone could share what we are doing in Peru so that we can receive volunteers and other ways of international support.

To promote good relationships and establish a cooperation spirit within the biology students of the National Agrarian University (UNALM) through different activities. Be the representing organism of biology students of UNALM and get their voices heard on important events.

DESCRIPTION
How did you come up with this idea (motivation source)? (2 lines) The scientists seem to be selfish and dislike working hand in hand. We identify a lot of opportunities for young biologists but there wasnt a way how to canalize them effectively and promote d ifferent activities in these groups. We wanted to change this, so BioUNALM was born with these ideals. How did you start the project? (2 lines) By a meeting that gathered a lot of biology students in 2006. All the comments and thoughts were collected and the bases of the current organization were set. Describe the process and the way you achieved your goals. (5 lines) We basically are a reference for those organisms that try to offer opportunities to young biologists and we manage ourselves to be more popular within these networks and to get more students involved in action plans. With different activities like lectures, social events, organizing cultural and science courses we get biologists closer to the truly reality. Besides, with our blog everybody can have updated scientific information and free access to knowledge in a simply and funny way. Who did you work with? Hoy did you do it? (2 lines) It was started by a group of young biologists. Its been youth -led developed all the time. What are the plans in the coming future? (2 lines) We would like to be a useful organization and a model that can be applied in different places to get more young scientists involved in current issues. Has your project won an award or contest? (1 line) Weve appeared on different media sources and won the first place on the Blog National Contest, Science apart in 2007.

YEAR: 2009-2010

Reassure Ship for World Youth participants commitment with society and leadership through volunteer work and donations for Peruvian communities in need.

DESCRIPTION
The Bus for World Youth (BWY) is a voluntary Post Program Activity organized by the Peruvian Alumni Association of the Ship for World Youth (SWY) program. The Ship for World Youth (SWY) program is organized and implemented by the Director General for Policies on Cohesive Society from the Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government. The purpose of SWY is to broaden the global view of the Japanese youths, to p romote mutual understanding and friendship between Japanese and foreign youths as well as to cultivate the spirit of international cooperation and the competence to practice it; and furthermore to foster the youths with capability of showing leadership in various areas of international society. The BWY project was proposed by the Peruvian delegation on board SWY 21 (2009) with the objective of traveling through Peru with the same spirit of the Ship, but on a Bus. The invitation was opened to all SWY Alumn i, resulting in the registration of 25 participants from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland and Peru; from batches 15, 16, 17 and 21. Throughout 14 days, from December 28th 2009 to January 10th 2010, the participants traveled by bus from Lima to Ica, Arequipa, Puno and finally, Cusco. Peru is a land with wonderful marvels, but with communities in need as well. Thats what we wanted to show to our participants, the real Peruvian face. In order to achieve that, we tried to get them involved in diff erent kind of social works in different places on our way. We included coast (Ica) and highland (Arequipa and Puno) communities in different poverty scales. In each place we tried to create an environment of partnership, solidarity and cultural exchange. In order to involve more people on the cause and to gain more donation materials, we created a system on which every participant was asked to sell coupons in their own contruies to create an international fund in Peru and buy needed stuff for the comunities. It was a succes.

Contribute to the sustainable development of rural communities of Peru through university volunteering.

OBJECTIVES:

Involve students from university with new learning areas (rural areas).

- Learn and value the ancient knowledge of the rural communities. Motivate more students from university to join and get involved with volunteering.

DESCRIPTION
The Group of Volunteer Students (GAV) of the UNALM (Univ ersidad Agraria La Molina) is a volunteering university association formed more than 9 years ago, as a proposal for field trips of the project UNIR/UNALM, which had the main goal of looking for new learning scenarios. Since then, a stable team is established that is committed with communities and the UNIR project, and it has been current until nowadays. Within the team, one of the greatest incentive s is to contribute with the development of our co mmunities by learning from them and sharing in practical ways what was learned in the classrooms. This is possible be cause the majors that we study are directly related with the agro -industrial development, the study and conservation of the environment, and so on. By creating a link of mutual contribution and with the farmer, and also a link of mutual learning. Field trips are leaded by professors of the University and voluntary students learn from(?) them. Professors are leaded by the director of the UNIR project, Dr. Nilda Varas who has been supporting and leading the group since its start. Plans for the future are the creation of a center of Ethics in the University where it would be possible to include diverse themes, specially volunteering. Currently the bases are being set for this project. As a team, we have received the acknowledgment of the Youth National Department (Secretaria Nacional de la Juventud) and we have being invited to participate in the TUNZA program, directed by PNUMA. We have also participated in the Geo Juvenile Peru process (Proceso del Geo Juvenil Peru). In the same way, we have being invited to the World Conference of Youth Volunteering of IAVE (Conferencia Mundial del Voluntariado Juvenil de IAVE Voluntariado Juvenil por la Solidaridad y la Equidad) in Panama city and the First International Meeting of Supportive Exchange of Organizations in favor of Exchange (Redafi) (1 Encuentro Internacional de Intercambio Solidario de Organizaciones a Favor Del Intercambio (Redafi)) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

Currently we are in the stage of consolidation of the university volunteering in the UNALM, with the creation of the University Volunteering Platform, which can involve the university community. We need financing to cover the travel allowance, transportation and materials for the activities and training in new tools that will help us to easily share our knowledge. And also, we need the support and participation from more volunteers, as well as the promotion of our activities.

Revista LATITUDES

www.revistalatitudes.org

COUNTRY: PUERTO

RICO

YEAR: 2009-2010

OBJECTIVES:

LATITUDES magazine is a youth oriented publication about international affairs analysis in Spanish. It serves as a convergent project in a cybernetic platform in order to bring a wide investigation on current subjects in the political sphere to the Puerto Rican audience. 1. To provide an extensive guide of analysis and news about world affairs. 2. To expand our readership locally and internationally by engaging the people into our projects of analysis and giving voice to their questions when doing our investigations or interviews. 3. To help develop our reporters abilities to manage any type of information from environmental, human rights, politics, foreign policy, etc. 4. To provide our audience with conferences and symposiums about developing international conflicts or local conflicts with impact worldwide. 5. To build an international network of correspondents from different universities worldwide that can help us with content from their home countries.

DESCRIPTION
How did you come up with this idea (motivation source)? (2 lines) The founder of Latitudes, Natalia Bonilla, understood that to make a difference into the way her generation was being sub est imated by the local media in the matters of interna tional affairs, she needed to do something. How did you start the project? (2 lines) First off, we recruited journalism and political science students to write from three to five international news reports and analysis in Spanish on each edition and after six months we integrated an English section called El Difcil that serves as a bridge to the global community to understand whats happening in Puerto Rico. This way the magazine serves two purposes and audiences: to inform t he Puerto Rican audience about what happened in the world and to inform the world audience what happened in Puerto Rico. Describe the process and the way you achieved your goals. (5 lines) It started off with an experimental issue to test the waters about the real necessity college s tudents had to be informed about international affairs. During these eleven months this initiative has proven to cover a necessity of analysis of US foreign p olicy and world news instead of welcoming the US events in the international section of the Puerto Rican traditional media as the only contact the young readers have with the world. Therefore, Latitudes has become a place of practice for a great amount of students who ha vent got the opportunity to write about international affairs. Who did you work with? Hoy did you do it? (2 lines) Journalism and Politics university students are part of our current staff. We assigned them stories to investigate and evalua te collaborations from professors and other citizens to be published. What are the plans in the coming future? (2 lines) Preparing for the long run, the Latitudes family is working now on short term goals to finally establish the NGO as a full media enterprise. Right now, the four public relations students are doing the required research to write a funds proposal in order to print the publication, pay the students for their creative work and moreover, offer a wide variety of workshops and conferences to the audience to help them understand whats happening in certain regions of the world. Has your project won an award or contest? (1 line) No, our project has not won an award yet but our reporters works have been nominated.

HOW THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU

The world can help us by promoting our cause to break with the insularism concept that what happens outside our borders do no t affect us directly or indirectly. Advertisements and any monetary donation will definitely be useful as we have a great list of w orkshops we offer to the audience that require materials, themes such as: News after 9/11, Our ecological footprint, etc. Also, if any member of the C ongress wants to collaborate with us with special reports from their countries status or current news we e ncourage him/her to do so.
