RSUM ADDENDUM CRITICAL LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES

Led turnaround of a major business initiative for a statewide health center-controlled network. As CIO of the Community Health Network of West Virginia, salvaged and reengaged failing electronic medical records project that was designed to create new profit center for the organization.

Results: Enabled the organization to successfully launch new profit center and avoid financial crisis that would have culminated in laying off personnel and shutting down all operations. Outstanding success of the project ultimately led to on-boarding 15 additional clinics, (beyond those initially contacted), increased physician satisfaction by more than 50%, and expanded the system to house more than 190,000 unique patients. Insights: I leveraged 20 years of project management and extensive technical expertise to develop a workable plan with measurable goals and objectives to turn the project around. It required taking charge, making tough decisions, and producing results under difficult circumstances. Using my vast IT industry knowledge, I found and worked directly with external programming resources to correct software defects in the system and other project problems.

Enhanced the value of a major asset for the largest oil and gas company in Appalachia. As Manager of Columbia Natural Resources, identified opportunity to leverage advanced scanning and Internet technology to capture the full value of vital land/lease documents while cutting costs. Developed highly effective business plan and spearheaded project to scan, index, and archive 2.5 million documents in a 9-month period with budget of $350,000.

Results: Saved more than $750,000 annually, ensured safety and security of this key business asset through digitization, and provided an enormous boost to productivity with online access to these records. Insights: This was a stand-out achievement for me as a technology innovator and proving my ability to recognize and exploit opportunities for improvement and growth for the organization. My technology design skills came into play, enabling me to create a very cost-effective, yet technology advanced, solution and associated workflow processes that released the true value of this critical asset to the organization.

Innovated a key business process for a large energy corporation. As Manager of Technical Services for Columbia Natural Resources, directed an $800,000 project to design, develop, and install custom field application using hand-held computers to automate and streamline collection of well volume data. This complex, mission-critical project spanned 16 locations in 6 states and collaborated with 100+ union personnel.

Results: Reduced cycle time for collection of well data by 2 weeks, reallocated 2 full-time employees in central headquarters (solely dedicated to entering well data) to other functions, and decreased data errors by 70%. Insights: With the involvement of the union and so many different locations, this project was a logistical and political challenge. I achieved these impressive results by leveraging strong communication and collaboration skills to create a pilot project that successfully fostered cooperation among the different stakeholder groups very early in the process. The result was 100% buy-in and ownership of the project, even by union members traditionally adversarial to any projects impacting their workflow processes.

Spearheaded the technology integration for a multimillion-dollar business acquisition. As partner in charge of technology for the start-up energy company, Triana Energy, led efforts to separate and subsequently integrate Columbia Natural Resources entire technology infrastructure in 3 months after purchase of CNR from Nisource.

Results: Seamlessly and effectively migrated all employees to new technology infrastructure (including new payroll system, email system, standard computer desktop, and Windows domains) with zero downtime or service interruption. Enabled Triana to assume full operations of CNR a full month earlier than anticipated. Insights: The advanced business knowledge I gained through my MBA degree from the University of Charleston was key in my ability to deliver these stellar leadership results. I combined this with my richly broad and deep technical knowledge to develop highly workable migration and integration plans, business strategies, and contract negotiations to make this M&A project a resounding success.
