Writen by: xxx 09004026 A ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM S-1 FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION AHMAD DAHLAN UNIVERSITY 2012 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter consists of background of the problem, identification of the problems, limitation of the problems, formulation of the problems, objective of the research, and significances of the research. A. Background Of The Problem English is one of foreign languages that are more popular that any other languages in the world. It means that language is humans tool to communicate to each other and their way to express or say the idea and thinking. As an international language, English is very important and has many interrelationships with various aspects of life owned by human being. An Indonesian person does not use English language commonly in a daily life. Therefore, to consider the important role of English, English is taught from the elementary till university, furthermore English itself Indonesian as second language. There are many languages in the world, like international languages, national language, and traditional language. English is one of the international languages which used by many

people in the world. In Indonesia, English still positioned as foreign language although many countries have put it as their second language. English is regarded as the first foreign language to be taught at elementary school as a local content, at secondary school as a compulsory subject, and at universities as additional subject. This shows the importance of English for the students. Therefore, learning English in Indonesia is necessary and must be introduced as compulsory subject for the students to learn. English is introduced into curriculum and it is a compulsory subject in kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school and university. The Indonesian government always makes effort to improve the quality of education by improving the quality of the teachers and other teaching components, which are involved in the educational processes. Besides, every learning process will go on well if there is motivation. It is expected that each student come to school having the motivation to study. Therefore, teacher has to make students productively involved using the work in the class. This step requires teachers creativity to create the most appropriate ways for their students. Teaching English is always oriented to master the four language skills: Listening; Speaking, Reading, and Writing. All the four skills are very important in teaching English. The language components, such as structure, vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation are taught to support developing of the four language skills. These skills are learned trough selected material based on their development level. The listening skill is also became very important in the education field, students need to be exercised and trained in order to have a good listening skill. However, in a teaching and learning process, a teacher must develop the four language skills interactively. Qualified teacher, good environment, facilities and media also support the success of language learning. According to Krashen and Terrrell (1985: 155) state that listening is the basic knowledge for the beginners for learning English as the media for communication. There are some aspects that need deep attention, such as input, process, background, instrument input, environment and teaching method, because the success of teaching process is depended on those aspects above. As a teacher, it is necessary to find new teaching media to overcome the problems and not to forget to motivate the students. Some teachers have used games, pictures, songs, real object and cartoon as their teaching media to grow the student creativity in learning process. In this study, cartoon film is chosen as a media for teaching listening. This media enables the students to explorer when they are learning in an enjoyable atmosphere and it helps the students canimprove memorize English listening more easily. By using cartoon film as media, it is hoped that the students increase English listening in this case, the writer chooses the students in SMAN 2 Wonosari, Gunungkidul, as the research subject to know their mastery of English listening. Because of the reason, the writer is interested in taking up the title of the research: The Effectiveness of Using Cartoon Fim To Improve Students Listening Skills In Tenth Grade of SMAN 2 Wonosari In 2012/2013 Academic Year. There are many methods that the teachers usually apply in teaching. Diane LarssenFreeman in the book entitled Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching explores the various kinds of techniques and methods in language teaching such as The Grammar Translation Method, The Direct Method, The Audio Lingual Method, The Silent Way, Suggestopedia, Community Language Learning, The Total Physical Response Method, and Communicative

Approach. There are some methods which are suitable and appropriate for listening teaching in Indonesia. Suggestopedia, especially in cartoon film, has been developed to help students eliminate the feeling that they cannot be successful and, thus, to help them overcome the barriers to learning. Watching cartoon film is fun activity which give young learners the opportunity to practice foreign languages in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Watching cartoon film can break the students reluctance in learning English because they feel comfortable and enjoyable. The purpose of the research is to know how effective cartoon film to improve listening skill is. B. Identification Of The Problem Based on the background, the researcher knows that the students have many difficulties in listening comprehension, especially in doing listening assignment. The students have laxities in memorizing and understanding the meaning of a word in listening activities. The teacher should apply the most appropriate technique and method in teaching. Cartoon film is an educational innovation that promised great result if we applied it correctly. It seems that applying the cartoon film method can give the good progress towards the students achievement in learning. By applying this method teacher hopes the students can feel as if they are in natural environment.

C. Limitation Of The Problems There are many kinds of methods that the teacher can apply in teaching English as what the writer has mentioned in the background. However, in order to get the optimal result in the research, the writer limits the problem of this study. The main problem of this study concerns with the application of the effectiveness of cartoon film as teaching method to teach listening in tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari. D. Formulation Of The Problems In accordance with the limitation of the problem above, the writer will use some questions in formulating the research problems. The problem formulations of the research are listed as follows: 1. How is the students listening mastery by using cartoon films of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari? 2. How is the students listening mastery by without using cartoon films of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari? 3. Is there any significant difference in the listening mastery between the students who are taught using cartoon film and those are taught without using cartoon film of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari? E. Objective Of The Research Based on the formulation of the problem, the objectives of this research are as follows: 1. To find out how the students mastery of listening taught by using cartoon film of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN2 Wonosari. 2. To find out how the students mastery of listening taught without using cartoon film of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari.

3. To find out whether significant difference in the listening mastery between the students who are taught using cartoon film and those are taught without cartoon film of the tenth grade senior high school students of SMAN 2 Wonosari. F. Significances of The Research The writer hopes that this study can give useful contributions in English teaching and learning activities, especially for the teachers, the students, and the other researchers.

1. For the students The researcher hopes that the students can be motivated to study English and they can improve their English listening skill. 2. For the teachers In this research, the researcher hopes that the result will give the teacher alternative methods in teaching English and make the innovations in teaching English. 3. For the other researchers The result of this research will give the benefit to the other researchers as the literary source of information in the same scoop of research.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED THEORIES In this paper, the researcher takes three items to be discussed in review of related theories; theories of the two variables, frame of thought, and hypothesis. These are explained one by one in the following sections. A. Theories Of The Two Variables 1. Cartoon Film http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Animated+movie

A genre of cinematic art in which films are created by photographing the successive phases of the movement of drawn objects (graphic animation) or three-dimensional objects (three-dimensional animation). Animation is not concerned with reproducing reality on film; inherent to animation are fantasy and artistic invention. For this reason, it is sometimes compared to the representational arts or is regarded as an independent art form that uses cinematographic techniques. Graphic animation, a special, artistically conventional method of animation, has its own expressive techniques of representing imaginary events and actions. Three-dimensional animation, which is not as versatile as graphic animation in the depiction of action, is distinguished by greater detail in the visual representation of the dramatis personae. Folklore, satire, and parable, which demand stylization and exceptional clarity of expressive techniques, are particularly suited to animation. In other source, animated films are ones in which individual drawings, paintings, or illustrations are photographed frame by frame (stop-frame cinematography). Usually, each frame differs slightly from the one preceding it, giving the illusion of movement when frames are projected in rapid succession at 24 frames per second. The earliest cinema animation was composed of frame-by-frame, hand-drawn images. When combined with movement, the illustrator's two-dimensional static art came alive and created pure and imaginative cinematic images - animals and other inanimate objects could become evil villains or heroes. Animations are not a strictly-defined genre category, but rather a film technique, although they often contain genre-like elements. Animation, fairy tales, and stop-motion films often appeal to children, but it would marginalize animations to view them only as "children's entertainment." Animated films are often directed to, or appeal most tochildren, but easily can be enjoyed by all. See section on children's-family films.

2. Listening http://www.freewebs.com/listening-skills/ Listening skills are very important in everyday life. One must understand what people are saying and what is happening around them. In order for this to be done effectively, one must be an active listener. This is achieved when the listener is listening for meaning; when the listener checks if the statement has been heard and understood correctly. The goal of this is to improve mutual understanding. Many people believe that listening skills are taught when in elementary school or during childhood. Truthfully, one can never really learn all the skills and apply them all the time. Many times people will be listening to someone talk but in their head he/she will be thinking about something else, or even be distracted by something that is going on around them. If two people are in an argument or debate, many times one person will be thinking about that he/she is going to say next instead of listening to the other person. In this case the listening might miss something and argue about something that isnt very relevant. Some methods to become a better listener are: 1) make eye contact with the speaker, 2) observe the speakers behavior and body language, and 3) paraphrase the speakers words and write them down as notes. Having good listening skills may come in helpful in a variety of situations. For example, during class, while taking notes, during a job interview, while interviewing a person, during counseling, while having a serious conversation with a friend or loved one, or while on the job, especially in a journalistic setting. In groups, listening skills may help attain better information and research or even assist in reaching a compromise or conclusion. Being a good listener has its benefits. By

having good listening skills one can avoid having misunderstanding, resolve conflicts, get people to open up, and build trust. In other source, listening is not a one-way street. It is not merely the process of a unidirectional receiving of audible symbols. One facet-the first step-of listening comprehension is the psychomotor process of receiving sound waves through the car and transmitting nerve impulses on the brain. But that is just the beginning of what is clearly an interactive process as the brain acts on the impulses, bringing to bear a number of different cognitive and affective mechanisms. According to James Ashers, 1977, listening as a major component in language learning and teaching first hit the spot-light in the late. In other hand, Rubin, 1994 states identified five such factors; text, interlocutor, task, listener, and process characteristics. In each case, important elements of the listening process were identified. For example, the listener characteristics of profiency, memory, attention, affect, age, gender, background schemata, and even learning disabilisties in the all affect the process of listening. B. Frame Of Thought Listening is very important in languages. This is one way to communicate one another. Moreover, listening is the way of communicating for a certain purpose in a heard form. Heard is more difficult to be learned than others. In listening, we need to pay attention to a lot things, some of those things are pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar of sentences. It needs more attention to enrich students listening skill. To heard well, people must have good hear in listening. The listener have to be able to listen more carefully. Furthermore, they should be able to listen with correct pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. The tenth grade of SMAN 2 Wonosari study speaking skill in two times a week with two hours in each time. In Senior High School, teaching listening is not devided with another abilities, such as speaking, reading, and writing. They learn English since in elementary school basically and some students join in any English course to develop their competence. In the school, the students are not only learning listening but also other skills even other subject. So, it is very short time to have good skill in listening because it is not something obtained naturally, but it needs practice fluently. Despite, what has been done in the teaching learning of listening, it is addmitted that the students skill in li is low. So, researcher hope using by cartoon film in listening teaching can make improve listening skill for students of SMAN 2 Wonosari. C. Hypothesis Based on the above review of related theories, the researchers formulate the hypohesis, that is using cartoon film in teaching listening can improve the studentslistening skill.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD In this paper, the researcher takes seven items to be discussed related to the research method; the type of the research, research design, population and sample, instrument of the research, collecting data technique, and data analyzing technique. Seven items are explained one by one in the following sections.

A. The Type Of The Reseacrch The type of this research is classified as an experimental research. The designs use two groups, which involves a group of students who belong to the experimental group and that who belong to the control group. The objective of the research is to know the effectiveness of using cartoon film in improving listening skill in the classroom of the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Wonosari of 2012/2013 academic year. In this research the researcher uses two groups; they are experimental group which is taught using cartoon film and control group which is taught without using cartoon film. There will be a pre-test before the threatment that is given to experimental group and control group, and after the treatment a post-test of the same instrument test is given to both two groups. The score result in the pre and post tests are compared to each other to find out the differences.

B. Reseacrch Design The research design is called one group pre-test-post-test design. There are two groups which can be used as the population in the design. They are experimental group and control group which is taught without discussion. Before the threatment a pre-test is given to them and after the treatment a post-test of the same instrument test is given to them. The score obtain then are compared to each other to know the differences. The research design can be illustrated as follow: A X1 Y X3 B X2 Y X4 Means: A : the control group (without using cartoon film) B : the experimental group (using cartoon film) X1: pre test control group X2: post-test control group Y : treatment X3: pre test experimental group X4: post test experimental group A:B C. Population and Sample 1. Population A population is the whole data which the researchers take an attention to, in a specific scope and decided time. Besides, population is the group to which the researcher would like the result of a study to be generalized. The population of this research is the students of tenth grade in SMAN 2 Wonosari. There are six classes in this grade and amount of students is 192 (32 peoples/class). 2. Sample A sample in a research study is the group on which information is obtained. The sample of this study will be taken from the population. In this study, the writer will choose two classes

out of six classes to be the sample of the study using cartoon film. If the population in one population are fewer that 100, the whole subjects in the population become the sample. Nevertheless, if the subjects in the population are more than 100, the sample can be taken around 10-15% or 20-25% or more. In this research the writers will take 10-15% of the total population in which is about 32 students. The writer will use random sampling method. Random sampling is one of sampling technique that the researchers take the sample randomly or without any requirement. More specific, the researchers will use simple random sampling method. Simple random sampling is the technique of sampling to obtain the sample directly from the unit of sample. D. Instrument Of The Research The researcher uses to collect data is called an instrument. To know the effectiveness of teaching listening by using cartoon film, the writer gives questionnaire to the students. The questionnaire is used as instrument of this research. The instrument that is used to collect the data is Listening Skill. E. Collecting Data Technique In collecting the data technique, the researcher uses a test. In this study, the test is given questionnaire. F. Data Analyzing Technique Data analyzing is a continuation process from data processing to observe how to interpret the data, and then analyze the data from output phase of the data tabulation.
