SECTION IV: COURSE SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS

Introduction This section briefly presents the course support requirements; which include course materials, ammunition, equipment, support equipment, facilities, and training aids; and then discusses how to determine the resources needed to conduct the course, such as the number of instructors and assistants needed, and the type and amount of equipment required.

Course Materials

The total quantity of materials required is influenced by the following: 1. The number of students participating in training simultaneously. 2. Time limitations when conducting the training. 3. Available resources from which to select course materials. As a rule, there must be at least one copy of all instructor references maintained on hand at all times. There must be enough copies of all the student references on hand so that each student has a complete set while attending the course. A sufficient supply of student guides must be kept on hand so that each student can be issued one. These student guides become the property of the student; consequently, supplies must be restocked periodically. Sufficient copies of the end of phase evaluation sheets must be kept on hand in order to support testing. Supplies should be replenished as existing stocks are depleted.

Ammunition

All ammunition requirements are listed in the CET and 51K10 POIs (Ammunition Summary). All equipment requirements for the 51K10 course such as a general pipefitters tool kit, plumbing fixtures, and gate valves are listed in the CET and 51K10 POIs (Equipment Summary). All support equipment requirements, such as transportation, for the 51K10 course are listed in the CET and 51K10 POIs (Support Equipment Summary).

Facilities

The types of facilities required for the implementation and conduct of the TATS Plumber Course, MOS 51K10, are as follows: 1. Administration: Suitable office space to house the day-to-day administrative activities associated with the conduct of this course is required. This includes space for the course manager, instructors, clerical support, administrative files, instructional materials storage, audiovisual equipment storage, etc. The office space is to be furnished with appropriate items of standard office furniture/equipment required for the efficient conduct of administrative operations. 2. Permanent Classroom: To meet school requirements, classrooms must be suitably equipped with tables, chairs, lectern, electrical outlets, sufficient illumination (natural or artificial) and ventilation, as well as other standard classroom furnishings (such as waste paper receptacles, bookcases, pencil sharpener, etc.). The furnishings are to be arranged in such a manner as to facilitate efficient instruction. In addition, a visitor's table and chair should be placed in the rear of the classroom so that a visitor can be as unobtrusive as possible. Latrines should be near the classroom. Emergency exit requirements are to be satisfied in accordance with local policy. 3. Temporary Classroom: For those occasions when group instruction is more effectively conducted in a field location, a temporary classroom facility may be used. This could include the use of a general purpose, medium tent equipped with sufficient quantities of field tables and chairs in order to accommodate school requirements of students, one instructor, and/or assistant instructor. 4. Training/Maneuver Areas: Sufficient land area to accommodate plumbing installation operations is required for efficient instruction. 5. Ranges: Access to, and use of these ranges must be carefully planned for and scheduled well in advance of the time for which they are required. This will ensure that ranges are available at the appropriate time during which training is to be conducted. 6. Billets: Students should be billeted in a maximum of four man rooms with adequate living and study space. 7. Dining Facilities: Provisions must be made to ensure the students attending this course are provided with full dining facility privileges in accordance with all applicable Army regulations and local policy. 8. Training Aids

All training aid requirements for the 51K10 course, such as overhead projectors, screens, and plumbing work booths are listed in the CET and 51K10 POIs (Training Aid, Device, Simulation and Simulator Summary).

Scheduling/ Training Schedule

Hours reflected in the CET and 51K10 POIs are to be used for all scheduling. Instructors must also ensure each student has access to a copy of the training schedule.

Determining Resource Requirements

1. Instructor Resources: The Instructor to Student Ratios shown in the POI technical modules (Appendix A) are used to determine the number of instructors needed for each type of learning activity. For example, in Module B (p. 13) IDT, there is a ratio of 1:12 shown for a conference method of instruction. The optimum class size for IDT is 12. Therefore, the ratio tells the course manager/instructor that for this conference instruction, there must be 1 instructor for every 12 students. The ratio of 1:12 for peacetime also indicates there must be 1 instructor for every group of 12 students. 2. Equipment Resources: The ratios shown in the POI Equipment Summary (Appendix A) are used to determine how much equipment an instructor will need to conduct each course module. For example, in order to determine the number of safety goggles required to teach PFN 051-51K1-E01 (p. 61), the course manager/instructor must look at the ratio of 1:1 which indicates that 1 pair of goggles are required for every student. The optimum class size for ADT is 12, so a total of 12 pairs of goggles are required (as shown in the Quantity Required For ADT column). To take another example, the ratio shown in Elbow, Galvanized, 45, 1/2 (Peacetime) column for PFN 051-51K1-E05 (p. 66), shows a ratio of 2:1 which indicates that 2 galvanized elbows are required for every student. The optimum class size for Peacetime is 12, so a total of 24 galvanized elbows are required (as shown in the Quantity Required for Peacetime column).
