Wileys Add a Book Project 1. Select a work of world literature that you would like to read.

You may choose any work that is of literary merit. If you doubt the merit, please consult me. 2. Read the work. 3. Write a persuasive essay of 2-3 pages that constructs an argument that this work should be included in the curriculum of World Literature here at Cooper. Please use examples from the work which highlight themes that you consider appropriate or style or diction. Your argument can be as creative as you wish. 4. Present in a book chat form your thoughts to the class. For this part of your assignment, you should prepare a 5-7 minute speech, using text and also prepare a handout for the class. 5. For this book to be added, you must select one work to remove. Your book chat should also argue why your choice works better, is more relevant, whatever you choose. 6. The paper will be worth 300 points; the speech will be worth 150 ( 50 of that is the handout). 7. Each World Lit senior must have a different book; first come, first served. I will post the list outside my room for sign up.

Add a Book Speech 1. Should introduce your audience to the work itself. In order to do this well, you should have a carefully prepared handout which outlines your arguments and gives examples of the text. Passages should clarify your analysis of diction, tone, imagery, dialogue, etc. Please have enough copies of the handout for everyone in class and for me. 2. You should also classify the work. Is this work a modernist, postmodernist novel? How well was/ is this work received? You should include some critical insights here. 3. You should offer compelling reasons that this work is a good choice for a senior here at Cooper. You may link it to themes, ideas, or other works we have covered. You may also include it for its uniqueness. If you would like to suggest which work it replace in the present curriculum, that might also be worthwhile. You may use comparisons, etc. for such reasoning.

Practice your presentation! Practice and familiarity with the work will go a long way in establishing a strong speech. Your presentation should be 5-7 minutes. If it is under 4:30, you will be penalized for insufficient length.
