How is it related to the Industrial Revolution? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Objective (1 minute): SWBAT compare and contrast Capitalism and Socialism. Mastery: At the end of this lesson, you will need to write at thesis on the following prompt:
1. Capitalism is a system of economics and government where individual citizens are allowed to own private property, businesses, factories, etc 2. Private individuals are able to own both the means of production (factories) and places of commerce (stores) 3. In this type of economy, individual businesses compete for customers and whoever is most successful is able to stay in business (Social Darwinism, survival of the fittest)

4. Communism is a system of economics and government where production and commerce are owned by the government. All people are supposed to share equally in pay and quality of life. 5. Communism was created by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, based on their belief that capitalism created unequal class systems (upper and lower classes) 6. In practice, Communism tends to concentrate power in the hands of a few people, leading to dictatorships and unequal classes Socialism is a mixture of Capitalism and Communism. Individuals own businesses, but the government takes care of some basic needs (housing, healthcare, food for poor, etc)
