About Metroparks
Metroparks of the Toledo Area is a regional system of premier natural, historical and cultural parklands. A public agency serving Lucas County, Metroparks maintains parks and conservation areas totaling 11,000 acres. The park districts mission is to enhance our quality of life and inspire preservation efforts in this and future generations.

Programs
Metroparks programs and activities encompass a wide variety of interests related to the park districts purpose. Programs are open to everyone. Children must be accompanied by adults unless noted as a drop-off program. If you have a disabling condition and would like information and support for accessibility to programs, services, facilities or applying for a job at Metroparks, call 419-407-9701. Park Partners volunteers or interpreters are available upon request.

Metroparks Trails
Trails in each of the Metroparks offer a variety of distances and experiences, from winding dirt paths through the woods and prairies, to hardsurface all-purpose trails suitable for bicycling and skating. Oak Openings Preserve also has horse trails.

Memories Are Made At Metroparks Camps


All camps are held rain or shine, with plenty of rainy day options. Wee Workshop Preschool Summer Camp (Ages 3 to 5) Explore favorite Ohio animals through songs, puppets and games. Enjoy multi-sensory activities, crafts and outdoor exploration. Adults will play alongside their child. Register child only. Wildwood Preserve, Metroparks Hall All Sessions Monday-Friday Fee: $55 ($45 Metroparks Members) Reservations Session 1: June 3-7, 10 a.m. to Noon Session 2: July 15-19, 10 a.m. to Noon Metroparks Explorers (Ages 5 to 7) Spend a week discovering change in the wonderful setting of Wildwood Preserve. We all change as we grow, some a little more than others. Come learn about the exciting world of butterflies, frogs, and the seasons with hands-on activities, songs, games and animal exploration. Home-base is Wildwood Preserve with exciting trips planned to other Metroparks and more. Bring your own lunch and water bottle. Equipment, supplies and field trip transportation are provided. Nature Camp (Ages 8 to 12) Campers appreciation and understanding of nature is sure to change during a week exploring change. Outdoor games, interactive activities and animal exploration keep inquisitive kids engaged as Metroparks staff guide them through natures ever changing features. Each day highlights a new theme making this a great experience for children who enjoy nature, history and the outdoors. One Day Camp


The Art of Nature Camp (Ages 8 to 12) Nature is the greatest artist of all. Campers use natural materials and nature as inspiration to create works of art. Please bring your lunch and a water bottle. Camp Earthstar (Ages 5-7) Spend a week discovering change in the wonderful setting of Oak Openings Preserve. We all change as we grow, some a little more than others. Learn about the exciting world of butterflies, frogs and the seasons with hands-on activities, songs, games and animal exploration. Home-base is Oak Openings Preserve with exciting trips planned to other Metroparks property, and more. Bring your own lunch and water bottle. Equipment, supplies and field trip transportation are provided. Oak Openings Preserve, Oak Openings Lodge All sessions Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee: $115 (Metroparks Members $95) Reservations Session 1: July 22-26 Session 2: July 29-August 2 Camp Badger (Ages 8-12) Spend a week discovering the challenge of change in the wonderful setting of Oak Openings Preserve. During this action-packed week we explore how frogs, butterflies, and the seasons change through fun outdoor games, hands-on activities and animal exploration. Each day features a new theme making this a great educational experience for children who enjoy nature, history and the outdoors. Oak Openings Preserve is home-base with exciting trips planned to other Metroparks property and more. Bring your own lunch and water bottle. Counselors In Training
Metroparks is seeking teens 13 to 17 with exceptional interests in nature, the environment and youth education to serve as Counselors in Training (C.I.T.s) for 2013 Metroparks Summer Camps. C.I.T.s work with camp counselors teaching campers, playing games, making crafts, fishing, canoeing, swimming and more. This is an excellent opportunity for leadership development, service hours and experience in outdoor education. Spaces are limited. Wildwood Manor House The stunning Georgian Colonial-style mansion at Wildwood Preserve stands as one of Toledos architectural icons. Enjoy free guided or self-guided tours every weekend at this 32,000-square-foot Depression-era home and learn about the regions rich history. Plan some extra time to visit the rare Ellen Biddle Shipman garden, Frank Stranahan exhibit and the Manor House library. Tour Hours: April May, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, Noon to 5 p.m.; June August, Tuesdays Fridays and Sundays, Noon to 5 p.m. Free. Group reservations available during the week for a nominal fee. Celebrate Summer at Stranleigh. Look for special programs June through August to mark the 75th anniversary of the estate/house

The Canal Experience Make a reservation to float back to the year 1876 aboard a replica canal boat at The Canal Experience at Providence Metropark. This is the only site in Ohio where mules still pull a boat through an original 19th century lock. Plan some extra time to stop by the 140 year-old Isaac Ludwig Mill to watch the power of water grind grain and saw logs. Open May through October Visit MetroparksToledo.com for hours of operation. Prices: Canal boat tickets $6 adults, $5 Metroparks members and seniors (60 and over), $4 children (3 to 12); ages two and under Free. Mill tours Free. Oak Grove School Meet a 19th century schoolmarm and experience how much education has changed in the past 100 years. The one-room Oak Grove School, located at the East Entrance to Wildwood Preserve, is the perfect place to spend time reminiscing. Call for Reservations. See History listing for programs. Side Cut Explorer Ride along the banks of the Maumee River and down the canal towpath in Side Cut Metroparks open air trolley. A naturalist highlights the scenery as passengers relax in a wheelchair accessible tram. The Explorer seats 12 comfortably. National Center For Nature Photography (NCNP) Exhibits from the nations premier nature photographers hang alongside images by local talent in this gallery. The National Center for Nature Photography at Secor Metropark is the only center of its kind in the country. After being closed for maintenance, the Center for will re-open May 4 with open hours on Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Free See Nature Photography listing for workshops and special exhibits.

Special Events
Honoring Our Ancestors: The Bicentennial of Fort Miamis On this bicentennial anniversary of the First Seige of Fort Meigs, take time to honor the British, American and American Indian soldiers who fought for control of the Maumee Valley. Witness the Ohio Historical Marker dedication ceremony paying tribute to the 41st Regiment of Foot stationed at Fort Miamis in May 1813. Following the marker dedication, continue the remembrance with a memorial wreath laying and a stroll around the ruins of Fort Miamis park in Maumee. Saturday, May 4, 4 to 5 p.m. Fort Miamis Free Meet The Author Experience childrens literature in a new way with Julie Rubini, author of Hidden Ohio. Ms. Rubini is founder of Claires Day, a local festival showcasing authors, illustrators and activities. Meet the Author includes a nature walk and time for a brown bag lunch. Cosponsored with the Toledo Area Council International Reading Association. A separate program and reception for teachers is available for a nominal fee. Bring your dog! There will be tail waggin fun for all ages. The winner of this years Toledo Blade Pet Idol contest will be announced live at the festival. Nature Programs
Spring Star and Sky Watch The stars have inspired mankind for generations. Tonight, participants visit a park after dark to gaze at the constellations and share legends of the night sky. Bring a sleeping pad or chaise lounge for comfort and dress warmly. There are no restrooms at this site. The group meets at different parks each month to share the enjoyment of birding. First-timers and experienced birders love these monthly avian explorations. Bring binoculars and field guides. Programs are free, but please register if planning to attend. Free | Reservations Birds of the Wetlands Last years spring hike to the wetlands produced a number of snipe and rusty blackbird sightings. This years trek promises to be just as eventful. Bird Study The Bird Study group meets monthly for an in-depth look at bird structures, behaviors and species. This program is designed as an indoor discussion, sharing and learning experience to enhance outdoor exploration and hone bird identification skills. All are welcome to join. Finding them isnt the challenge, its identification that often proves difficult. Metroparks Seniors: Wildflowers of Pearson Pearson Metropark is the ideal location to explore the world of wildflowers. The program begins with a slide show followed by a walk in search of these beauties. Thursday, May 16, 2 to 3 p.m. Pearson, Packer-Hammersmith Center Fee: $2 | Reservations Family Ride: Nature by Bicycle In honor of National Bike Month, families with children 9 and above are invited to enjoy a naturalist-led ride along the western portion of the University/Parks Trail. This special trip is complete with stops to highlight significant natural features, plants and wildlife. Helmets are required. Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m. to Noon Wildwood Preserve, Visitor Center Free | Reservations Blue Week: Oak Openings Corridor Tours Be among the first to experience some of Metroparks most recently acquired sites. A naturalist leads this drive through the Oak Openings Region corridor and describes why it was critical to save these rare habitats. Stops will be made at select areas to explore by foot during this special three-hour program. The minivan only holds six passengers, so be sure to register early. The Karner blue butterfly will be one of the topics thats sure to be discussed during Blue Week.

Organic Lawn and Garden Workshop with Rachel Carson In her 1962 book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson drew attention to the overuse of pesticides. Her personal convictions and thoughts will begin the workshop in a re-enactment. Participants will then get tools, tips and resources from area agencies on how to go organic with lawn and garden care. Learn how you can be part of Audubons Healthy Yard, to measure our collective impacts on birds and environmental conservation and health. The workshop concludes with a Silent Spring nature walk. Geocache History Adventure Explore the history of Wildwood using GPS to locate clues throughout the preserve. Sunday, June 9, 1 to 3 p.m. Wildwood Preserve, Metz Visitor Center Fee: $3 | Reservations A Precious Property Wildwood Preserve is part of the globally threatened Oak Openings Region. The important habitat shelters over three dozen state-listed plants and animals. Enjoy a presentation and walk through this ecological haven to discover which rare species eke out an existence on this small, but precious piece of land. Thursday, June 13, 7 to 9 p.m. Wildwood Preserve, Metroparks Hall Free | Reservations Especially for Families: Night Hike and Fireside Stories Enjoy early spring wildlife on this night hike through the woods and meadows of Secor Metropark. The evening ends with hot chocolate and folk tales about nature. Register each family member. Friday, June 14, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Secor, Lone Oak Shelter Fee: $3 | Reservations Beginning Backpacking for Women Participants master the basics of backpacking on this weekend adventure trekking through Oak Openings. Experienced staff guides this women-only group on a Metroparks adventure. Fee includes all equipment needed, but participants must provide sleeping bag. Please dress for the weather. Full Moon Walk The beauty of the moon lights the way along this naturalist-led walk complete with stories and nighttime nature activities. No flashlights or dogs please. Friday, May 24, 9 to 10:30 p.m. Side Cut, Riverview Area | 12 | Free | Reservations Side Cut Explorer Travel along the banks of the Maumee River and down the canal towpath. A naturalist highlights the scenery as passengers relax in Metroparks wheelchair-accessible, open-air trolley. Program runs every Tuesday, June through October. Canoe Programs
Maumee River Canoe Paddle Explore the Maumee River on a three-mile canoe paddle around Missionary Island. See one of northwest Ohios natural gems and get some exercise on this naturalist-led excursion. Participants must be 12 or older. All minors must be in the same canoe as their legal guardian. Program canceled if water is high. Two people per canoe. Please wear clothes that can get wet and bring sunscreen, bug spray and water. Preschool Pioneers (Ages 3 to 5) Come to the little cabin in the big swamp and experience what life was like 146 years ago. Please register child only. Pearson, Johlin Cabin, Seaman Road Entrance Fee: $5 (Metroparks Members $4) | Reservations Start Your Engines Children hear a story of how people moved from place to place and make a wagon to take home. Friday, April 12, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dying for Color The pioneers discover how farmers once sheared, carded, spun and dyed sheeps wool. Children hear a story and have the opportunity to dye yarn. Friday, May 10, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Kids Geocache Adventure Learn how to use a GPS to search Wildwood on this fun adventure of high tech hide and seek. Fallen Timbers Battlefield Preservation Commission: For 200 years the Fallen Timbers Battlefield was hidden in plain sight. Now that its been found, what will happen to it? Metroparks volunteers will shape the battlefields future for the next hundred years, so now is the perfect time to get involved. Monday, June 24, 7 to 9 p.m. Friends of Lathrop House The oldest house in Sylvania is starting to look like itself again. As the restoration of the basement and exterior of the Lathrop House, a home rich with Underground Railroad history, near completion, the volunteer group responsible for preserving the home invites everyone interested in the regions history to attend the bi-monthly meetings. This month, help celebrate the winning students of the Underground Railroad Essay Contest and enjoy listening to the stories they wrote. Anthony Wayne Garden Club Flower Show Nature inspired both indoors and out at the Manor House. This weekend, the Anthony Wayne Garden Club hosts its bi-annual Flower Show at Wildwood Preserve. View flower show entries in the Living Room and Solarium, then peruse the restored Shipman Garden outside the Manor House. Save some time for a free tour of the house.
