Science Unit Lesson Plans Week 6 February 11-16 Science 1:15-2:15

Monday (Wilsons Class) Topic: Tornadoes COS: 12.) Identify conditions that result in specific weather phenomena, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Goal: For students to be able to identify the conditions that result from a tornado. Objectives: -TSWBA to understand weather by measurable quantities such as wind direction, wind speed, precipitation, and barometric pressure. -TSWBA to recall severe weather phenomena. -TSWBA to understand ways that, through the use of science processes and knowledge, people can solve problems, make decisions, and form new ideas. Materials: -Graphic organizer -Vocabulary - The Fujita scale -Pre-test - Live stream video - Rectangle groups

Procedures: TTW begin by giving the students a quick pre-test on the chapter vocabulary and key concepts. TTW then introduce the unit by discussing the vocabulary words with the class. Following the discussion of the vocabulary, the teacher will hand out the graphic organizer for the chapter and the Fujita Scale. The class will watch an animated clip on how tornadoes form and a clip from live stream of a meteorologist following the path of a tornado. The teacher will then divide the class into their square groups. Each group will work together to research their assigned category tornado. The groups will research a F1, F2, F3, F4, or f5 tornado. The groups will present as if they were a meteorologist following the path of the tornado. Each group will include the following information in their presentation: What a tornado is Where is can form How it can form Its category The amount of destruction it can produce The vortex How it is forecasted Safety precautions

Evaluation:

The students will be evaluated by their graphic organizer, Fujita scale, and group presentations. Tuesday (Kolenichs Class) Topic: Tornadoes COS: 12.) COS: 12.) Identify conditions that result in specific weather phenomena, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Goal: For students to be able to Objectives: -TSWBA to understand severe weather phenomena and related safety concerns. - TSWBA to identify the effects of the ocean on the climate. -TSWBA to recognize that hurricanes can have positive and negative effects on living things. -TSWBA to recognize that a model of something is different from the real thing, but can be used to learn something about the real thing. Materials: -Saffir-Simpson Scale - Concept web -Study Guide - What scale am I activity

Procedures: The teacher will begin by showing a hurricane monitor. The class will be allowed to follow a step by step animation of how hurricanes form. The teacher will hand out the Saffir-Simpson Scale for the students observe. The students will work in pairs to answer the questions from the scale. The class will then follow a jigsaw method to learn about hurricanes from the chapter. The class will meet in their triangle groups and share their finds for their section. The class will then meet with their same group to answer questions from their study guides. The teacher will review the answers from the study guides! Evaluation: The students will be evaluated by their Saffir-Simpson Scale, group participation and findings, and their study guides. Thursday (Kolenichs Class) Topic: Hurricanes COS: 12.)
