The War on Drugs

In the past few months, so many prominent people and important entities, here in the US, have been advocating for the legalization and regulation of some drugs, such as Marijuana, so crime and the moneymaking status quo that has been created due to their prohibition could be reduced. The actual impact on allowing people get access to the most dangerous drugs without any legal punishment is an issue that must be regarded seriously, since society is already overwhelmed by the great number of lives that are lost each and every day. A general legalization of any drug in the US would deteriorate considerably the health of the American people, would have a much bigger fiscal deficit in the nation, and would increase criminality to unthinkable levels. It is scientifically proved that drug abuse can have impacts on brain development in younger users. Smoking marijuana can cause respiratory issues, just like long-term alcohol consumption is linked with a host of cardiovascular and nervous system problems, not to mention cirrhosis. And that's the short list. So in a short term, if people have free hold of drugs, the number of sick people will raise significantly. Consequently, if more people get ill, the monetary pressure on the Social Security System will deepen much more the hole of our fiscal deficit. On the other side, you have President Barack Obama's drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, who emphatically denied that marijuana legalization would prove a boon to state offers. Like Taxes on alcohol, he told CNN in 2010,

amount to $14.5 billion a year, whereas the health and social costs are closer to $185 billion. It is a simple math operation: More people get health issues, more people will look for medical treatment. Ultimately, then, my goal is to demonstrate that despite the idea of the medicinal attribution some drugs possess, the negative effects of their abuse outweigh the positive. The psychological consequences are devastating, Drugs allow us to feel a temporary confidence or happiness, but the effect is usually one of borrowed time. Often the unhappiness or anxiety returns even more strongly once the effects wear off. At times, drug addicts run out of money to keep their addiction, which is when they feel tempted to commit criminal actions. Keeping drugs illegal is absolutely the right thing to carry out. Doing so will definitely avoid the risks of increased corruption and the potential loss of civic order. No matter how much the drug war has cost the price of the legalization will always be much more expensive.
