In Singapore, obesity is a rapidly growing crisis and its getting even worse that it may be about to overtake smoking

as the most serious problem in the nation. National Health Survey shows the obesity rate has increased from 6.9 per cent in 2004 to 10.8 per cent by 2010 (RafflesMedicalGroup). Obesity leads to the dangerous health problems such as cancer, diabetes and number of cardiovascular risks such as coronary heart disease. The lack of physical activity of many Singaporeans and a more sedentary lifestyle that they lead is the main cause of the obesity. National Health Lifestyle program (NHLP), Duke Nus Graduate Medical School and Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) are the key groups that provide health education and spread awareness among the people in Singapore. In 1992, National Health Lifestyle program concentrated on changing the lifestyle to decrease the obese among Singaporeans. So they introduced few methods to reduce the obese, such as eating healthily and be physically more active. Also, in the Duke Nus Graduate Medical School the Deputy Head of Health Services and System Research (HSSR) leads a team in aims, to help Singaporeans to tackle the problem of the obesity through the practice of effect behavioral changes (DukeNus). Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) is conducting many obesity related programs and encouraging the community to include physical activities in their day to day life. Also, HPB conducts road shows to raise awareness among the public and promote health educations through media. Singaporeans took the opportunity to get involved in these programs; as result there is large improvement in rates of major diseases and controlled increase (6.0% - 1998 and 6.9% 2004) in obesity rate when compare the statistics with 1998 and 2004 by National Health survey (Channel News Asia, 2010). Other efforts of the HBP are to getting those in the food business to produce lower calorie food products and meals, to lower down the 25 billion kilocalories from Singapore's food supply in 2013 (Channel News Asia, 2010). HPB also aims to do the Body Mass Index survey every two to three years to observe the obesity trends nationwide. It also organizing a weight-loss programme, called Lose to win (Health promotion board). This 12 week programme is conducted by professionals to lead a healthy lifestyle. As the result, lose to win has helped over
2,000 participants to get in shape. Also, Singaporeans consuming wholegrain foods have increased

from 8.4 per cent in 2004 to 27.0 per cent in 2010, whereas the intake of carbohydrate has decreased by 11 per cent between 2004 and 2010 (Health Promotion Board, 2013). As the result there is decrease in the number of type 2 diabetes. In conclusion, obesity is basically due to consumption of excessive calorie foods and inadequate physical exercise. Therefore a nutritious and balanced diet is more important for everyone; especially nutrition is needed for growth and development in the daily life. Thus, everyone should be responsible to their own health by improving on diet and including physical activities in their day to day life to maintain a healthy life style.
