Stop abusing us
On Friday 2013-03-01 lLeboeng SAPS conducted a crime awareness campaign with the learners of Leboeng Primary School. The learners speak for themselves with the posters that read We say no to rape stop abusing us . The learners were addressed by Constable Maimela Andrew Sibatana. He taught them about the different types of abuse. He further warned them not to accept gifts such as sweets and money from strangers and to report any form of abuse to their parents, teachers and police immediately. He also advised them to walk in groups when they come from school. (Photograph by Constable Sibatana M A, Leboeng Police)

By Wednesday morning this week, the water supply situation in Praktiseer was still not sorted out, but the following statement was received from the district government just before going to press: The Sekhukhune District Municipality wishes to extend a humble apology to the people of Praktiseer for a prolonged water shortage they endured for weeks due to water shortage in their area. Important to note is the continued problem of breakdown of raw water pumps in Tubatse River where we draw water. We are however pleased to report that currently all our pumps are running as normal and its a matter of hours before we supply people in full capacity. In addition we wish to inform our people that our divergent project in Tubatse River is progressing well and we hope that it will be completed in two months. In its completion, this project will replace the current one which has aged and continuously breaking down. Our apologies once again. .

Kgautwane Community Development Center receives big donation

The Kgautwane Community Development Center received a big donation recently. Ms Wendy Sefer, who is staying in Johannesburg, was impressed by the work Ms Clara Masinga is doing in Kgautwane after a friend introduced them to each other. I was impressed with her work when we met three years ago, she said, and since this time, I do my best to support Masinga and the Center. Last week Thursday, she came to visit Kgautwane for the first time this year and brought along lots of donations. A whole trailer, proudly sponsored by the National Trailer Rental, was packed to capacity. Sefer explains, how it came to such a big amount: At my home, I have one additional garage which I do not use for parking a car. Everyone in my neighborhood knows that this garage is only for Clara and her project. The people come and donate whatever is still in a good state but they do not use anymore. So it came that around 200 pillows for the preschool at Center, a huge amount of books and magazines, shelves and lots of other things were delivered to Center last week. Wendy Sefer explained that from time to time Clara Masinga is coming to Johannesburg to introduce herself to friends and colleagues of Sefer. Donations increase after every visit from Masinga as people appreciate the work she is doing. Masinga declared viewing the new donation: I am very happy to get this help. It will help our children and elderly a lot. She added that she is very glad about her good relationship with Sefer. The donations will be used for the Centers pre-school and the Elderly project.

This is not a stick-up...

On Friday last week motorists passing an accident scene on the R555 towards Steelpoort thought a cash-in-transit heist just took place. What actually happened was just an accident. A vehicle carrying pensions payout money and a police vehicle from Burgersfort station collided. The armoured vehicle was on its way to Steelpoort and two policemen were on their way towards Burgersfort. It is not clear which of the vehicles lost control, but their collided and the cash-intransit vehicle overturned, said Const. Mpho Moloise from the Burgersfort SAPS.

The two detectives from the Burgersfort SAPS were taken to Dilokong Hospital for treatment. Luckily they were not critically injured. No injuries were reported from the occupants of the armoured vehicle. There was no crime, and no money was taken from the cash-in-transit vehicle, Const. Moloise said. It was purely an accident. The accident caused long delays on the road towards Steelpoort as the injured policemen were being taken to hospital by ambulance and the damaged police vehicle were towed out of the way.

Lion II on track
Merafe Resouces says the commissioning of the Lion II smelter near Steelpoort is expected during the second half of 2013 and about 50% of the budgeted cost of R1000 million was incurred to 31 December 2012. The company says in its Abridged Audited Group Annual Financial Statements that in spite of heavy rainfalls and community unrest, the expected commissioning date is stillenvisaged in the second half of 2013 and the project remains within budget. Once this plant is fully operational, additional consumption efficiency improvements and cost savings are expected to materialise. The company is a joint venture partner in this project with Xstrata. Merafe Resources says stainless steel production is expected to increase by 4% in 2013 and by 5% in the long term which would lead to increased growth in demand for ferrochrome globally. Given the reduced supply of ferrochrome resulting from the Eskom buy-back agreements in South Africa, coupled with improved market sentiments, the company expects increased pricing going forward saying Merafes low cost base leaves it well positioned to take advantage of the increased demand for ferrochrome. The company says it looks forward to a further strengthening of its position as the lowest cost producers in South Africa when Lion II comes on stream. .During 2012, Merafes total ferrochrome production was 242 000 tonnes which was 8% lower than the comparative period primarily as a result of weaker demand and participation in Eskoms power buy-back programme. The compensation received from Eskom for the electricity not consumed was adequate to cover the costs and lost profits on the associated volumes. Operating capacity utilisation for the 2012 year reduced to 66% compared to 72% for the prior year. Total cost increases were contained at 9.2%. The company says growth in stainless steel production in 2012 was primarily driven by the increased production of stainless steel in China. This resulted in a new record production of stainless steel in 2012 of 35.2m tonnes compared with the 34.1m tonnes in 2011. Global demand for ferrochrome was up year on year, to 9.7m tonnes in 2012, exceeding the previous high of 9.5m tonnes in 2011. The increased demand and reduced supply of ferrochrome resulted in the drawing down of global ferrochrome stocks. A number of issues, including the continuation of concerns for the Eurozone due to the ongoing debt crisis, economic woes in the United States and other geopolitical events, such as the change of leadership in the Communist Party of China, resulted in weaker market conditions which affected ferrochrome demand in the second half of 2012.Global ferrochrome production increased to 9.3m tonnes in 2012 compared to 9.2m tonnes in 2011.

Initiation schools on track

167 applications received
The Working Committee on Initiation Schools in Limpopo Province confirmed that on 28 February 2013, the official closing date of submission for license applications to operate an Initiation School for the 2013 season the following number number of applications were received (167 in total): Sekhukhune Capricorn Mopani Vhembe Waterberg 61 51 37 18 0

Local Working Committees in all districts were established to go through all applications in their districts and recommend to the department; depending on whether they meet tradition and custom requirements. Limpopo is a province that comprises a number of different tribes that are characterized by different cultures and beliefs, hence the practice. The province is known for hosting these initiation schools which are part of its cultural practices and are regarded as cultural educational institutions where initiates are taught about customary values and conduct. The practice is protected by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights (Chapter 2 of the Constitution) which guarantees cultural, religious and linguistic rights. The MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr NC Motsepe has cautioned Traditional Leaders to ensure that initiation schools are not opened solely for economic reasons, wherein initiates are charged exorbitant fees. The MEC encourages the participants to go to legitimate schools and warned that law enforcement agencies will have zero tolerance to lawbreakers in this regard. Malaria cases decline in Limpopo

Since the beginning of the 2012/13 financial year, malaria has shown a marked decrease in Limpopo. During the period April 2012 to February 2013, 848 malaria cases were notified in Limpopo, compared to the 2,991 cases notified during 2011/12. Furthermore, January to March is normally the period when malaria cases increase sharply in Limpopo, mainly due to travel during the festive period and the rainy season. This year however, malaria cases remained at lower levels, even though Limpopo experienced severe flooding during January. For January & February 2013, 307 malaria cases were notified, compared to 1189 in 2012. Although malaria cases are at lower levels, the potential always exists for focal increases to occur during the summer. In order to detect these and manage possible outbreaks, the Department of Health has sensitive surveillance systems in place. Malaria control spray teams are also active throughout the province and can respond to increases quickly. Due to the fact that Limpopo is a known malaria prone province, the provincial Department of Health is fully prepared to deal with all malaria cases. All Primary Health Care clinics are fully equipped to deal with malaria patients at community level, with malaria tests and treatment available at all clinics. All hospitals are also prepared to deal with more severe malaria cases. The Departments main malaria control intervention, namely indoor residual spraying, is also actively busy conducting spraying in all the affected areas, by malaria spray teams. Over the past 5 months, more than 700,000 structures have been sprayed in the malaria risk areas. Teams are still busy conducting spraying in affected communities and to raise the awareness to malaria in these communities.

Goodbye to Calvin College founders

Last week Calvin College said goodbye to Mr Mike Roetz and his wife Lizzie. The couple started Calvin College 15 years ago and will now go on well deserved retirement. Police violence in the spotlight: How

Police conduct in South Africa came into the spotlight again after eight Daveyton policemen allegedly tied a 27-year old man to the back of a police van and dragged him along a street in Daveyton on Tuesday last week. The policemen were being caught on camera by eyewitnesses. The man, Mido Macia was a Mozambican national and died in the police holding cells several hours later. He was a taxi driver and allegedly parked wrongfully on a road. This apparently lead to a scuffle between the police and Macia. The policemen claimed they simply put the resisting suspect into the police van. A post mortem showed that Macia died of head and internal injuries. The Congress of South African Trade Unions told the press this week that the SAPS told them that Macia died after being attacked by another man in the cells at the police station. Two warrant officers and six constables have since been charged with the murder of Macia. A large group of protestesters gathered outside the court in Benoni, some waving posters. One poster read Steve Biko also died in police custody. Macias family expressed their disappointment with the way the whole case was being handled. By the time of going to press, the identity of the policemen had not been made public. We asked readers how this incident influences their trust in the police and how they feel about the police in South Africa.

Mr Steven Sebulela said: I dont trust the police 100%. Not all of them are doing bad things. What those ones did with the taxi driver was unacceptable. Their aim is to protect and serve so we dont know what happened there.

Me. Cecilia de Bruyn s: Hulle het by my huis ingebreek en binne 10 minute was die Burgersfort polisie daar. Gelukkig was hulle minder suksesvol.

Mr Richard Magatsela said: Whatever those policemen did last week was not right. We cannot trust the police in general. Bribes and all that stuff they do is not right. They must do a proper job. That is what they get paid for and is trained for.

Mr Dunstan Lowan said: Last weeks incident can never be an isolated problem. If there are criminals at my house and I hear the police sirens, the chances are good that Ill be running from them too. There is nothing good about them at this stage. They are brutalising. We are now also dented internationally. We can expect the same treatment from the Mozambicans as weve given their people over here. We are not safe with the police.

Mnr.

Me.

Mr Kgotso Malapane and Mr Mpho Mokwena said: The police have a problem. No, we dont trust them. They kill people.

Mr Max Makgabo and Mr Lucas Makofane said: If we run to the police they will kill us. There wont be any trust towards them. Many people die at the hands of the police. They must save us, but they are not doing their job. We must do the job ourselves, but it is against the law. Maybe we should get our own guns.

much do you trust the Police?

Ms Patricia Mabokwane and Ms Lindiwe Mdluli said: No, we cannot trust the police. All of them are the same. We will not ask them for help because we dont know if they are good or bad police.

Me. By hulle is Lenette Volschenk.

Mr Rasty Paile said: How can you trust the police? The police must protect the community. The Burgersfort police work on small things, but dont give attention to serious crimes.

Mr Patrick Mafuwane said: On the 100% scale, I trust only 30% of all policemen. Many of them only protect famous people. We ordinary people are struggling to be helped.

Ek en my familie is soos honde. Daar was n man by die Womens Rights mense wat vriendelik was en probeer help het. By die polisie trust ek niemand nie. By hom is Mr Leonard Motene en Mnr Kgaogelo Mphogo.

Right: Ms Thokozani Tshabalala said: We are not protected. I think that people often get hurt at the hands of the police. Some of them dont care about people. In general I dont trust the police.

Ms Johanna Selahle said: Those policemen doing things like that are not the proper policemen. Proper policemen would not do that. I feel shame for what those men did. Ive never heard anything wrong with the Burgersfort police. I still trust them. They are doing their job.

Mr CJ ONochie (left) said: Both parties in last weeks incident did not do right. Not all the South African police are doing things like that. We still trust them in our area. Some of them are doing good in our community. With him are Mr Steve JuuJuu and Mr Elliot Sebulelo.

A pleasant surprise
Flex is a word that does not seem to have much in common with cars such as Rolls Royce, but it is a word hyped by Opel for the back doors of the Opel Meriva that open the wrong way, calling them flex doors. So there you have it if you study the contemporary Rolls Royces, they also have flex doors like the Opel Meriva! Jokes aside, the other than conventional back doors of the Opel Merviva 1.4 turbo we received from Westvaal Steelpoort to test drive this week, proved to be hugely practical as they open up more than 80 degrees compared to the 67 degrees of conventional back doors. After you have tucked junior into the back seat, he or she will love the blade styled lower windowsill at the back seat and will be able to see outside from a child seat, for which there is two ISO fix anchor points. If you only have a dog, you can lower the back seats in a jiffy to create a large loading bay behind the front seats of a, what we found, a very practical MPV. The Merivas interior is quite subdued and the perceived quality of materials and fit is quite high. Finding the right position behind the steering wheel is easy and the front seats are very comfortable. The steering can also be adjusted for height and reach, keeping the wheel rim from the neat dials of the instrument cluster. No Tokyo-by-night here and lighting of the instruments and the myriad of buttons on the centre of the facia is quite pleasant, especially for night driving. The myriad of buttons seem daunting at first, but are actually quite logical to use, together with some of the controls on the steering wheel. O yes, another flex is the centre console which Opel calls flex rail. It simply means that you can configure the centre console to your hearts content in three layers, which also hides drinks holders, CD holders and an armrest if you so wish. The back seat will take three people, the middle one a little smaller than the other two and you will need to shrink him or her a little bit more if you have a very ambitious configuration of the centre console The Meriva comes in two configurations, the Enjoy and the Cosmo (?) with the Cosmo the more expensive one with a full glass roof. Not very practical in Burgersfort and surrounds in summer mind you, but luckily it can be closed by the press of a button and the air conditioner is very efficient. Bet it will instantly transform junior into a stargazer at night. But how does this MPV go you ask? Surprisingly well. The 1.4 Ecotec turbo motor pulls strongly through all the six gears and a 0 - 100 km/h will see you in just more than seconds in ideal circumstances. 103 kW @ 4900 r/m and 200 Nm between 1850 and 4900 r/m makes it no slouch. The motor needs to be kept boiling for overtaking and a downshift or two from the sixth gear easily accomplishes that. Boiling will also push fuel consumption through the roof, but good economy can be had if you drive like your mother in law wants you to. On the road visibility was good and the vehicle soaked up bumps quite easily. It was also quite surefooted, even through the twisties, where there was just a tiny hint of a wallow before the myriad of electronic gizmos caught the car. Will it work in our environs? Sure it will, except for two little gripes The low profile tyres and space saver spare wheel. Not good where potholes are rife. Prices at Westvaal Steelpoort (tel 013 230 9519) are R242 200 for the Enjoy and R262 900 for the Cosmo, VAT included.

Thorburn Security Solutions Community Golf Day

Last week Saturday the Thorburn Security Solutions Community Golf Day was hosted at Tubatse Chrome Club. This annual event is one of the ways in which Thorburn says thank you to the Sekhukhune Community for their support. This day was an opportunity for the golf caddies at the Tubatse Chrome Club to show their skills on the other side of the game - by playing. Thorburn equipped four Tubatse Chrome Club caddies with clothing and the team enjoyed the day with the other players. Teams from local schools, mines and a community team also participated while a ladies team and a Tubatse Club team was also entered. Thabang Moropa, Thorburn Holdings executive director and shareholder, also participated in the day. Executive Mayor for Sekhukhune District Municipality Mogobo David Magabe attended the lunch after the golf. Caddies who worked on the day were spoilt by Thorburn with a food parcel, cap and t-shirt to say thank you for what they do at the Club and for the players. It happens on some days that they may walk long distances to the club only to find that players might not be playing or that there are too many caddies versus players. The Thorburn idea of a caddie academy is becoming more and more of a reality. The day was not about winning, which was reflected in the prize giving which changed format from the past. The first three winning teams received ordinary prizes, but amongst others were two ice machines, two microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, fans, cooler bags etc. handed out to players through a lucky draw event. The overall winner was a team from the Steelpoort Academy lead by head master Mr Alberts. A second pull or push cart was also delivered in the Sekhukhune area and will be handed to a worthy individual in the community. The cart can be used to transport water cans, goods in general or for entrepreneurs selling goods next to the road. Thorburn would like to train a local in manufacturing the carts, design multipurpose and different carts and encourage businesses to buy these carts from the local entrepreneur to distribute amongst communities. The local Thorburn management team assisted with the arrangements for the day. The team said thank you to everyone who contributed towards this fun day with the community, clients and business associates. (Information: Dolf Scheepers, Thorburn Security Solutions).

Halfway through players received a prego roll to keep the hunger away. Below: The Thorburn sponsored caddie team.
