Unit: The Heros Journey Title: The Odyssey: The Hot Seat Activity Description (1-2 sentences): This lesson fits into the Odyssey study. We are doing this lesson about midway through the novel. We are also watching clips of the film throughout the unit. This activity will challenge students to take on the roles of these different characters personas in an engaging and educational way. I will be facilitating this activity by discussing certain questions the students should think about asking or questions they may anticipate having to answer as their designated character. I will be making sure that there are specific points that we address in our discussion. Subject: English-Lang & Lit Instruction time: 40 minutes Students level by grade: 9th grade Standard(s) to be addressed: SL.9-10.1. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 910 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. -Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas. Enduring Understandings/Essential Questions targeted in this lesson (for units created using the Understanding By Design framework only): -Students will be able to take on the persona of a given character in this book and complete the Hot seat activity. Learning Objectives for this lesson (Written using verbs from Blooms Taxonomy): -Students will be able to create at least 3 different questions given their designated character and deliver them in the class setting. Instructional method(s) used in this lesson: Direct Instruction- Explain this activity to students and how it ties to their learning of the content. Indirect Instruction- Which is what the majority of this lesson is. This is teacher-student led instruction. I will set up the activity and provide guidelines but students will do the majority of thinking and processing throughout this lesson. Student will have to expand their understand and comprehension of the text by actually taking on these personas. This, I feel is an engaging way to get students to learn and to motivate them to think outside the box. Lesson Sequence: 5 minutes: Homework Check (reading comprehension questions in packet) and go over instructions 10 minutes: In small groups (character groups) create at least 3 questions for each of the 6 characters who will be on the hot seat 20 minutes: Hot Seat Activity (whole class) 5 minutes: feedback from students and tie the whole experience together
