• The Teaching American History (TAH) program provides high quality
professional development to American history teachers

TAH Background
• TAH began in 2001 to meet the needs of students and teachers with
inadequate preparation in U.S. history
• Grants have been awarded for seven years; these grants are held by
school districts in all parts of the country

Quality Applications
Applicants are encouraged to present a seamless program based on the
priorities and selection criteria in the 2008 Notice Inviting Applicants

Quality Applications
Applicants should design a program that brings in historians and history
educators to work with the teachers in improving their content knowledge and
their ability to implement this knowledge in the classroom

Quality Applications
Applications should focus on traditional American history as defined in part (b) of
the Project Quality criterion. Applications should not be limited to the history of
only one state or region, one ethnic group, or one time segment of American
history.

What is new in the 2008 Notice
• There is one competitive preference priority and no invitational priorities
• There is the possibility for continuations for an additional 24 month project
period
• Prior to making funding decisions, a review of past performance and
compliance history will be completed—EDGAR 75.217 (d)(3)(ii)

Slide 8:
Up to 60 Month Performance Period
• Applicants should note that this program now allows for grants of up to 60
months (i.e., a 60 month project period), as set out in the Federal Register
notice published on October 10, 2007 at 72 FR 57540. Applicants should
submit a plan for the grant activities and the budget for the full period of
time for which they apply. Applicants applying for the full 60 months
should include a detailed three-year budget and total estimated budgets
for years 4 and 5. The maximum award for the first three years of the
grant, regardless of a grantee’s proposed project period, will be governed
by the maximum award amounts set out in the Federal Register notice,
Section II. Award Information, Maximum Award, (1) of the announcement.
The amounts requested per year for years 4 and 5 should be comparable
to the amounts requested per year for Years 1 through 3
