PART-II
(1) Compare Air-standard Otto, Diesel and Dual cycles with p-v and T-s diagrams for the (i) same compression ratio and heat input, (ii) same maximum

pressure and heat input, (iii) same maximum pressure and temperature and (iv) same maximum pressure and output. (2) An air-standard diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 18, and the heat transferred to the working fluid per cycle is 1800kJ/kg. At the beginning of the compression stroke, the pressure is 1 bar and the temperature is 300 K, Calculate (i) Thermal efficiency (ii) The mean effective pressure. (3) An air-standard diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 18, and the heat transferred to the working fluid per cycle is 1800kJ/kg. At the beginning of the compression stroke, the pressure is 1 bar and the temperature is 300 K, Calculate (i) Thermal efficiency (ii) The mean effective pressure. (4) The bore and stroke of an engine working on the Otto cycle are 17 and 30 cm respectively. The clearance volume is 0.001025m3. Calculate the air standard efficiency. (5) For the same compression Ratio, show that the efficiency of Otto cycle is greater than that of diesel cycle. (6) In a Otto cycle, the pressure at the end of the compression is 15times that at start, the temperature of air at the beginning of compression is 38 0 and maximum temperature attained in the cycle is 19500. To find (i) CR (ii) Thermal of the cycle (iii) Work Done (7) The stroke and cylinder dia of a CI engine are 250 mm and 150 mm respectively. If the clearance volume is 0.0004 m3 and fuel injection take place at constant pressure for 5% of the stroke volume. Determine the of the engine. Assume the engine working on the diesel cycle. (8) A diesel engine has a CR of 15 and heat addition at constant pressure takes place at 6% of the stroke. Find the air standard of the engine. Assume = 1.4

(9) The swept volume of a diesel engine working on dual cycle is 0.0053 m3 and the clearance volume is 0.00035 m3. The maximum pressure is 65 bar. Fuel injection ends at 5% of the stroke. The temperature and pressure at the start of the compression are 800C and 0.9bar. Determine the air standard of the cycle.

(10) An oil engine working on the dual combustion cycle has a CR 14 and the explosion ratio obtained from an indicator card is 1.4. If the cut-off occurs at 6% of the stroke. Find the ideal of the cycle. (11) A C.I. engine has a compression ratio of 12 to 1, and two-thirds of the heat of combustion is liberated at constant volume and the remainder at constant pressure. The maximum pressure is 48 bar and the pressure and temperature at the start of compression are 0.95 bar and 500C. The index of compression and also of expansion is 1.33 and the working fluid may be assumed to be air throughout the cycle. Calculate: (i) Thermal efficiency of the cycle and (2) the mean effective pressure.
