Defining = Especificativas ( sin comas)


PEOPLE THAT(informal) // WHO (formal)* = que, el/ la cual, los/las cuales THAT(informal) // WHICH (formal) = que, el/ la cual, los/las cuales WHOSE (cuyo/a, cuyos/as)

Theres a man outside that / who wants to see you I want a watch that /which is waterproof The woman whose husband is the president is Mrs Brown.

THINGS PEOPLE and THINGS

Cundo puede omitirse el relativo? Cuando va seguido por un sujeto. - This is the man (that/who) I met in the party. Qu ocurre con las preposiciones y los relativos? Podemos tener dos casos: 1. Que la preposicin vaya detrs del verbo y por tanto alejada del relativo: People: I know the girl who / that he spoke to Things: This is the house which/that I wrote to you about 2. Que la preposicin vaya justo delante del relativo: People: I know the girl to whom he spoke to Things: This is the house about which I wrote to you

Non-defining = explicativas (con comas)

Qu ocurre con las preposiciones y los relativos? Podemos tener dos casos: 1. Que la preposicin vaya detrs del verbo y por tanto alejada del relativo: People: My uncle, who you were with this morning, gave me $400 Things: That house, which I wrote to you about, belongs to my grandma 2. Que la preposicin vaya justo delante del relativo: People: My uncle, with whom you were this morning, gave me $400 Things: That house, about which I wrote to you, belongs to my grandma

* Tambin podemos utilizar WHOM cuando nos referimos a un objeto tanto en


las especificativas como en las explicativas, pero esta opcin es ms formal. The boy whom I met is American // I met a boy V object
Truco: si utilizamos slo who y which tanto para las especificativas como para las explicativas, lo tendremos siempre bien, a no ser que el relativo vaya detrs de preposicin, en cuyo caso habr que utilizar whom y which.
