Aims Speaking practice (role play); grammar and writing practice: asking & answering questions, verb tenses; comparisons Level Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate Time Approximately 35 40 minutes

NOTES: (1) Lead in with the question of who their best friend is and how long they have known them. (3 minutes) (2) Seat your students in pairs, distribute the handout to each pair, and read aloud the instructions to your students. Then, on the board, write the following questions: 1. Who has / (had for higher level students) the healthier lifestyle? 2. Who has / had the more interesting life? Set a time frame (of about 10 minutes) for Your students to brainstorm 13 additional questions to ask Anna and Annie. For lower level students, have them write present tense questions: o What kind of food do you eat to stay healthy? o What kind of exercise do you usually do? o Etc. For higher level students, past tense and present perfect tense questions can be used: o What kind of food did you eat to stay healthy? o What kinds of exercises have you done to stay healthy? o Etc.

Monitor and assist students. (15 20 minutes) (3) Next, combine pairs of students into groups of four television interviewers (now with 2 lists of questions). Choose another pair of students for each group of interviewers to be Anna and Annie (each group now having six members) Anna and Annies questions can be given to and used by the interviewers (now with 3 lists of questions). Each group should now have over 40 questions to ask the students can skip any similar questions and move on to the next questions on their lists. Make sure that Anna and Annie participate equally by each being given a chance to answer each of the questions avoid situations where Anna answers, We were both born in New York. Instead, encourage unique answers from both Anna and Annie. (15 minutes) (4) Wrap-up the activity by having the reporters discuss and decide who in their group (Anna or Annie) has / had the healthier lifestyle, and who has / had the more interesting life. (5 minutes)

IDEA! Follow up this activity by assigning a short homework assignment. Have them write two paragraphs to compare and contrast Anna and Annie.
