REPORT ON CLINICAL ENHANCEMENT SEMINAR

The Bicol Medical Center in partnership with Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges spearheaded the seminar entitled, Clinical Enhancement with the theme, New Avenues Towards Nursing Competencies. This was held at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges Auditorium, Nabua Camarines Sur last Friday, December 7, 2012. More than a hundred flooded the entrance of the CSPC Auditorium to attend this 2012 Regionwide seminar. Various participants came all the way from different municipalities in Albay including the different prestigious schools and institutions from Legazpi, Camarines Sur and Naga. The seminar is divided into three parts with three respective topics. The first topic, Innovative and Interactive Approaches in a Clinical Teaching-Learning Milleu was discussed by a renowned Professor at UP Manila Interactive Learning Center and a World Health Organization representative as well, Dr. Nemuel S. Fajutagana. He comprehensively tackled about the common problems with teaching and the associated philosophies that could guide the teacher in achieving effectively the students learning goals. Different issues in the teaching methods used by contemporary teachers, instructor, or professors, including the Choice of Strategies and the Learning Credo that is usually applied when teaching were also clearly discussed. This reminds us that Teaching is about learning outcomes and in good teaching, the method used is always secondary to the teachers AIMS for student learning. After the first talk, we are flaunted by song and dance numbers prepared by the participating faculty and students that somehow rekindled our thoughts and energy that morning. After a while, we prepared ourselves for the next two topics. The second topic, Nursing Informatics, was discussed by John Francis L. Faustorilla Jr., a prominent e-Health training faculty from the National TeleHealth Center. He taps the challenges on establishing technologically-based system especially on clinical settings that would facilitate the integration of data, information, and knowledge to support patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support, according to him, is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. The main purpose of this is to improve the health of Filipinos through the optimal use of information and communications technology. As we scrutinize this issue, since technology as we all know aids human beings to ease the work especially the bulky one, we could initially conclude that introducing this kind of system in health care world, could be at first overwhelming. Lots of issues should be addressed. One of these is the questions to be answered like Who will use it? How to use it?, and What if the system is hacked or corrupted? Actually, one of

these questions was thrown during the open forum but this is not a problem according to the experts due to the systems easy access, user-friendly, and high security. Cracking the Case: The Nurses Role in Forensics was the last topic discussed by another outstanding speaker, Dr. Angelito Jericho Q. Cordero, a registered nurse and a specialist at Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory in Camp Crame, Quezon City. He clearly discussed the roles of nurses in suspected domestic abuses violence and points out the various skills a nurse should enhance particularly in evidence collection, documentation of findings and protection of the chain of custody that would aid in the investigation and solving of various incidents related to abuses. It was a fulfilling day we must say, knowing the various avenues to enhance teaching skills and its associated challenges on how to make it happen or the application of those knowledge in the classroom and clinical setting. This would help us modify and simplify the concepts and teaching methods to be used, become more sensitive to the students learning needs, and become more effective teachers to our beloved nursing students. It was a very informative seminar indeed. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the unselfish support of the Bicol College administration in the Continuing Professional Education towards Quality Education.
