What is Neuro Linguistic Programming ??

NLP is the study of what works in thinking, language and behaviour. It is a way of coding and reproducing excellence that enables you to

consistently achieve the results that you want, both for yourself, for your work and your life. life
Sue Knight (Author, NLP at Work)

To maximise your results using NLP, you must first of all understand how the unconscious mind works, as this is what drives our behaviour, our ability to communicate and ultimately impacts the results we achieve. achieve

Businet Conference, Florence (12th November 2010)

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming ??

Neuro The Nervous System through which our environment and the experiences we have are processed using our 5 key senses; experiences Visual Auditory Kinesthetic Olfactory Gustatory

Linguistic The Verbal and Non Verbal systems of communication through which our neural representations are coded, given order and given meaning and include; Pictures Sounds Feelings Smells Tastes Words (self talk)

Programming The ability to discover and utilise the programs that we run internally through our neurological internally systems which help us achieve our specific and desired outcomes (external communication and behaviors).

The Power of the Unconscious Mind

How does our UNCONSCIOUS MIND work ? MIND

Organises and stores memories Runs and preserves the human body Controls and maintains perception receives / transmits perceptions to the conscious mind Enjoys serving the conscious mind, but needs a clear set of instructions to follow instructions Needs repetition until a habit is fully installed driving a car / song lyrics Works on the principle of least effort Maintains instincts and generates habits Takes everything personally and literally power of suggestion Is programmed to continually seek out more and more information

DOES NOT PROCESS NEGATIVES !!!!

Thinking & Communication Patterns

In computer terms we are exposed to more than 2bn bits of information every second. The brain can only process approx 134 bits of information in that same second.

So how do we filter all of this information?

DELETE THE INFORMATION

DISTORT THE INFORMATION

GENERALISE THE INFORMATION

Thinking & Communication Patterns

Which sentence below demonstrates the correct use of grammar

The yolks of eggs are white Or The yolk of eggs is white

QUESTION: How many of you DELETED the important piece of information ?

Businet Conference, Florence (12th November 2010)

Thinking & Communication Patterns

Interpreting information as something other than the reality it actually is, is called DISTORTION

I conudlt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. Now what do you see ?

Thinking & Communication Patterns

And again, what do you see now ?

Which way does the door open ?

Businet Conference, Florence (12th November 2010)

Thinking & Communication Patterns

Which way does the door open now?

Door Hinges

We expected the door to open in a certain way based on a generalisation of how a door and its handle correlate to one another. But we did not have a complete set of information.
Businet Conference, Florence (12th November 2010)

Thinking & Communication Patterns

The unconscious mind generally deletes, distorts and / or generalises information presented to it based on one or more of our 5 key filtering mechanisms;

Meta Programs Values Belief Systems Memories Previous Decisions

Thinking & Communication Patterns Internal Representational Systems

Typically we run external information through our internal processing and create an Internal Representation (IR) of that event. Our IR is based on the different aspects of our senses and may include: Visual Auditory Kinesthetic (Feelings) Olfactory (Smell) Gustatory (Taste)

Our IR can be measured through a simple evaluation questionnaire and is expanded out to highlight what our preferred thinking and communication pattern.

The real benefit of being able to understand and recognise your own, or someone else's, preferred thinking and communication patterns, is the opportunity and choice it then provides to help you modify and influence behaviour in such a way as to achieve your desired outcome or goals.

Reading & harnessing non-verbal communication

Businet Conference, Florence (12th November 2010)

Communication ???
The meaning of communication is the response you get.
Good communication is about keeping your message clean, concise and relevant to the person or persons you are interacting with. The true test of your communication skills should be measured by the response you get back and whether this meets the outcome you had in mind.

There are no resistant communicators, only inflexible ones.

Communication
In 2007 the United Nations sought feedback from its member nations on a key global issue, they asked one simple question;
Question - Please provide an honest opinion about solutions that would help solve the food shortage issue facing the rest of the world. This question was a huge failure because; In AFRICA they didnt know what FOOD meant In EASTERN EUROPE they didnt know what HONEST meant In WESTERN EUROPE they didnt know SHORTAGE meant In CHINA they didnt know what OPINION meant In the MIDDLE EAST they didnt know what SOLUTION meant In SOUTH AMERICA they didnt know what PLEASE meant And in the USA they didnt know what REST OF THE WORLD meant
