Biographical research Spuybroek is the founder and sole principle of the architectural firm NOX which he established in 1995. He was born in 1959 in Rotterdam and has grown to be included in the group of architects considered the super Dutch. He graduated from the Technical University Delft with cum laude or with honors in 1989. Across his career he has won many architectural competitions and has been presented with an array of awards, the earliest he received being in 1989, when he won the Archiprix (An international competition for the best graduation projects in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture) for his Palazzo Pensile design. Theories and WritingsNOX is a company that believes in art and architecture as a combined element-They are against minimalism, traditionalism and materialism. They believe that buildings should be things of beauty. This can be seen in the book 'The Architecture of Continuity', which delves into Lars Spuybroek's mind, containing a large collection of his essays and interviews.-One example that demonstrates how much Lars Spuybroek values the idea of using buildings to create certain types of atmospheres is the P_stop in Belgium.-He came up with this after noticing how people only viewed roadside toilets as dirty but convenient things.-He wanted to create something more than just a toilet block. And he did.-These lavatory pods draw you in, with their large dome-like entrances and act as mini-landmarks you just can't miss. They are works of art. How the Practice works Because of their strong artistic beliefs, NOX work more with clients from the art world rather than the commercial, banking world. Their approach to projects is highly conceptual, they even take inspiration from mythology, for example they based their hotel and office towers project in Dubai on the myth of The Three Graces, conjuring up the idea of graceful playfulness as well as unity and strength through alliance.

NOX also take pride in their use of technology and digital design and see the computer as a vital tool in the architectural profession. As demonstrated by their design for the Pompidou Two, they digitize their concepts and the development of their ideas is carried out using specialist software. They do, however, start out with more hands-on methods, like strapping down balloons to generate the structure and form of the building or taping down intertwined strips of paper to model the movement of people in a house, like they did for the artistic project Son-O-House. Timeline Since 1994 until nowadays NOX has enriched the world of architecture and it continues its jorney further. Without the succsess Lars Spuybroek and his firm experienced after being internationally recognised with the watter pavillion, NOX works and projects have been appreciated in various architectural competitions since 2001. NOX and the other architecture firm OKRA were noticed with their exclusive project during the competition Silk Road in China in 2006. A place where a variety of different cultures mixesu up together. In the building , there is even a commercial layer where western European cities can offer food from their own cultural backrounds. This is what NOX is about. The sence of unity which comes together with one of the most succsessful and prize winning NOXs projects The three graces in Dubai. Inspired by a Firth-of-Forth bridge in Scotland the family of the three towers connected by a 600-meter long footbridge will appear as a gate to a harbour and enrich the still developing city of Dubai with the sence of unity, beauty, charm and joy. The D-Tower is another public artwork project built in the Netherlands. It is a 12-meters high structure, where columns and surfaces share a continuum. There is a website where visitors can change the colours of the tower based on a questionnaire about hate, love, happiness and fear. The HtwoOexpo, built in the midd-1990s was a breakthrough for Nox. The water pavilion is a futuristic art project designed digitally with an organic/liquid interior and exterior, the first if its kind, where floors transform into walls and walls into ceilings. Maison Folie is a cultural centre built in 2004 in Lille Wazemmes, France. It is a complex of buildings that started from an old textile factory and became a multi-purpose hall with art related functions.
