Internal Convenor Manifesto Brian OSullivan Proposer: Enda Kerr Seconder: Niamh McDermott My name is Brian OSullivan, a Law

w and French student currently tying up the loose ends of my first year in UCC. If I have learned anything from this first season in Aras na Loai it is that you will get as much out of your college experience as you put into it. It is for this reason that I have become so actively involved in the variety of events and outings organised by the Law Society. The humbled professionalism of the society, and in particular the 83rd session has inspired me to become as involved as I can in its workings. And what better way to fulfill this than to run for internal convenor in the upcoming elections for the 84th session of the Law Society. This is a position which appeals to me on a number of levels. To trump the outstanding achievemnets of Aidan Burke, the outgoing Internal Convenor is no mean feat, but is a challenge I will relish. I believe I carry the ambition and skills nessecary to help make the 84th session bigger and better than ever before. Experience: To start, as Internal convenor, my role will be to organise house meetings and guest speakers. Organisation seems one of the cheif skills required for the position. A skill which I am confident I possess in great proportions. It is no secret that good organisational skills are not developed overnight. And indeed mine havent. All of my secondary school life was spent organising charity events, contacting guest speakers and organising for them to come talk to our year group, doing the usual meet and greet with them. Indeed, I met some fascinating people over the years, and hope to continue doing so as Internal Convenor. Furthermore, I took the chair as president of my schools Rotary International Club for a year and was vested with the responsability of organising house meetings, delegating work among a team and overseeing the organisation of various charity events. Work similar to that I hope to fullfill as Internal Convenor. As an individual, I am a very responsible and ambitious person. I am driven and determined and am no stranger to hard work. All of these qualities feed into what I believe makes me the perfect candidate for this role. The immense responsiblity associated with this particular role does not seem daunting to me. As I have previously stated, I relish the various challenges associated with it. Ambitions: I have a number of ambitions as Internal Convenor, some of which stretch beyond its traditional role, others which I hope will improve upon what the Law Soc has to offer. Firstly, I hope to tighten the links between Law Soc and other societys such as The Phillosoph and An Cuallacht among others. Organising debates and other events in conjunction with societies such as these, I feel, will help strenghten our society as a whole, as well as provioding some very interesting meetings. For example, I would propose that the Law Society take a stand and get more involved than before in R&G week through, for example, a Charity Boxing Tournament in conjunction with the Boxing Club, a poker tournament, or a Law Soc C.S.I competition. As well as being good fun and promoting R&G

week charities, events such as these will help promote the brand name that is The UCC Law Society around campus. Allowing the sciety to flourish and evolve further. Aside from this, I propose to have a number of good old fashioned movie nights throughout the year, some being law related and some a bit more off the wall. As well as the traditional debates we all know and love. It was in these debates that the Law Soc truly captured my attention and enticed me to become more involved. I hope to have a similar effect on incoming first year students by having certain debates geared towords them. One of which I propose to hold during freshers week to catch them while theyre bright eyed, bushy tailed and as enthusiastic as I was. Motions I submit include Should there be a complete overhaul of the Irish College application scheme as we know it and the always fascinating Death penalty debate, or the legalisation of marajuana accross numerous states of the US. Throughout the year, I would like to see the continuation of the comedy debate which proved such a success this year, and would love to see the return of comedian Keith Farnan or possibly someone like Ardal OHanlon, an avenue which I have researched. I would like to see Law Soc talks and debates become more regular, and marketed as well as possible to the entire college. Topics I would suggest among others include: Online Gambling - A fastlane to addiction. Sexual Offenders The curse of a stereotype, the worst kind of punishment. Should Criminal Justice focus more on rehabilitation. The Right to free speech- When does free speech become costly. The future of the Irish language. Should prisoners enjoy the same rights as the rest of the population.

On top of all of this, I would hope to continue, if not extend the tradition of welcoming big name guests to the Society, just like the previously mentioned Keith Farnan and Ardal OHanlon, I would aim to lenghten the list of big name guests. Im certain many of our members would love to see the return of the Cheif Justice (as featured at the COLR launch) at some stage next year and this is something I aim to look into. If anyone has any questions regarding my proposals or otherwise, please feel free to contact me at 112320026@umail.ucc.ie It is with hope and confidence that I will conclude. Hope and confidence that I have convinced you of my suitability. Hope and confidence that my aims for the Law Society run parallel with your expectations. Hope that you will vote Brian for Internal Convenor, and confidence that you will make the right decision. Is Mise Le Meas, Brian.
