Atomic & Molecular Physics Courses from Manipal University

The Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics (DAMP), Manipal University is a centre for advanced research and teaching. The centre is on its way to becoming a leading centre for research in a vast area of atomic and molecular physics consisting of ultra-fast phenomena in atoms and molecules, light matter interactions, optics and quantum electronics, condensed matter physics, nanophysics and nuclear physics. The Centre which initially focused exclusively on research has made its mark in the academic arena with the introduction of M.Sc. Photonics course that got launched in September 2009. This being the first step by Manipal University towards meeting the national and international needs of expertise in Photonics, the centre has also started a certificate course in Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology. Short courses of this kind which are application-oriented will be conducted regularly round the year. The centre is located in the floor LG-1 of Academic Block 5 in the Manipal Institute of Technology Campus. Apart from the 7 permanent teaching staff, Adjunct Professors from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, Raman Research Institute (RRI) Bangalore, University of Pennsylvania visit DAMP and teach advanced postgraduate courses. Manipal University has signed aMoU with TIFR for joint research collaboration to promote basic and applied research in the campus. History: A centre for advanced research in laser spectroscopy for biomedical application in Manipal was initiated in 1997 when Prof. M.S. Valiathan was the Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) (now Manipal University). The Centre for Laser Spectroscopy was established in April 1997 and Dr. V.B. Kartha, FNA, FNASc, was the head till 31st March, 2004. During the last 10 years the centre has developed into a full-fledged laboratory where basic and applied research is progressing in the area of laser spectroscopy and biophotonics. The centre has very active research collaboration with the Atomic and Molecular Physics of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Manipal University has signedanMoU with TIFR for joint research collaboration to promote basic research in the campus. An ultra-fast laser laboratory is being set-up in association with TIFR. DAMP has active collaboration with many research institutes across India. Names of the research institutes are following Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Mumbai University Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai Raja Rammna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore
