Scoring Rubric for Math II Intermediate Algebra Lesson: Applications of Tabular and Graphical Presentations of Linear Equations Name

of Activity: Polygon Trains Description of the Activity: The class will be divided into six groups. Each group will do the activities on the worksheets to be given to them. (A sample of the worksheet is attached to this rubric.) The worksheet will tell students to sketch trains made from different polygons. Trains are constructed by joining together two sides of two polygons in the way we will describe below. The example used is for a train constructed from regular hexagons: connected to connected to yields yields

and so on. Each polygon in a train will be called a car. Each train will also have a certain number of windows; a window is a side of a polygon that isnt the side of any other polygon in the train. For different types of polygons, students will make trains with different numbers of cars (starting with 1 car, then with 2 cars, then with 3 cars, and so on, up to 10 cars) and they will count the number of windows as the number of cars increase. After that, students will tabulate the number of cars in the train (x) along with the number of windows in the train (y). Then they will graph their findings on the blank graphs provided. After that, they will provide the equation associated with each graph in point-slope form (y = mx + b) while showing their solutions. They will then answer some supplementary questions in the end. Objectives: At the end of the activity, students are expected to have mastered the following: 1. Distinguish between dependent and independent variables in a linear relation. 2. Organize data and construct tables of linear relations. 3. Plot points carefully on the graphs of linear equations. 4. Determine the equation of a linear relation given some plotted points in the graphs. 5. Apply related concepts such as the concept of slope and the different forms of writing linear equations in answering questions related to linear equations. 6. Derive patterns based on observed data.

I. Organization (40%) All of the data written in the tables are correct. Points in the graph are plotted correctly. The graph of the linear relation passes through all of the plotted points. Sketches, if present, are made properly. All of the final equations are presented in their proper form y = mx + b. Final solutions are neatly and systematically presented. II. Knowledge The final answers to the equations of the lines are correct.
