Bridge Watch Alarm System BW-700 Manual

BW-700 is produced in accordance with international and Danish laws for one man bridge operation e.g. IMO resolution A.830. BW-700 has been designed for mounting on a DIN rail in the power cabinet or flush mounting. The purpose of the bridge watch alarm system is to ensure the continuous monitoring of the bridge operators fitness during "one man bridge" operation.

Operating instructions:
The Bridge Watch can only be activated and deactivated by use of a key. Therefore, only authorised personnel (usually the captain) can decide if the bridge watch alarm should be active or not. The key function has 3 setting modes: The 3 modes are: ON (the BW is active all the time), Off (the BW is not active) and Auto (in this mode the BW is only active when the ships autopilot is on). When the BW-700 is active, the built-in timer must be reset, before the preset timer has run out. The reset of the timer can be done in two different ways: manually by activating a reset button or by ensuring a constant movement (activity) sensed by the movement detector on the bridge. The time is set on the adjusting button Timer before the BW is activated. The preset time cannot be changed as long as the BW-700 is active. When the timer is 15 sec. from running out, a warning is activated. The warning can be a small alarm buzzer or a light signal depending on what is connected. This gives the captain time to reset the timer before the alarm is activated. If the captain of the ship has not reset the timer within 15 seconds the 1st of the 3 alarms will be activated. Alarm 1: This alarm is placed on the bridge and is meant to ensure a weakening of e.g. a drowsy ships master. The alarm can be switched off by resetting the timer. If the timer is not reset after 15 seconds the alarm switches to alarm 2. Both alarm 1 and 2 is now active. Alarm 2: This alarm is placed where the back-up officer / captain is presumed to be. Now the alarm can only be switched off by using a key. However, the alarm on the bridge will be silent when the timer is reset. Alarm 2 stays active until the key is used to switch it off. If the alarm is not switched off and there is still no activity on the bridge after 60180 seconds the alarm 3, now alarm 1, 2 and 3 is activated. The timer can be set from 60180 seconds during installation, to give time to the back-up officer to react on the alarm. Alarm 3: This alarm is placed in the crew area. The alarm can only be switched off by using a key. However, the alarm on the bridge becomes silent when the timer is reset in order to avoid stressed personnel. Alarm 2 and 3 remains active until the key is used to switch it off. Emergency calls: BW-700 also has an option for connection of emergency calls. This will be in the form of a push button. When activated for 2 seconds the alarm will automatically go to alarm 2 and subsequently to alarm 3 if no action is taken. Using this function the ships master is able to call for assistance if needed. The alarm can only be switched off by using a key. However, the alarm on the bridge becomes silent when the timer is reset in order to avoid stressed personnel. Alarm 2 and 3 remains active until the key is used to switch it off.

AB-2:
AB-2 is designed for use together with BW-700. AB-2 will sound an alarm when the timer has expired. It sounds a powerfull tone from the 4 loudspeakers and the red warnings light flashes. AB-2 can be preset to 5 different warning pitches during the installation. To avoid disturbance when the alarm goes off, AB-2 is constructed to start with low volume, and rising to high volume within seconds. The maximum volume can be set between 75 and 90 DB.

Visual Indications The dual color LED is used to signal various alarm and trouble messages as shown in Table 1 below: Table 1. Interpreting the Visual Indications Visual Indication Significance None No detection Steady green (5 s) MW walk-test detection Flashing green PIR walk-test detection Steady red (5 s) Alarm: MW + PIR detection Flashing red and - Trouble or masking is being detected by the self test circuitry green (alternately) - Initial warm-up routine (stops 60 seconds after power up). Notes: During walk testing, the green light glows steadily (MW detection) or flashes (PIR detection), depending on which one of the two detectors discovered the movement first. Upon subsequent discovery of the movement by the other detector, the green light goes off and the red light glows (alarm). If the LED maintains alternate red and green flashing beyond the warm-up period, a malfunction or masking has been diagnosed. Replace the unit without delay. The DIP switch mode selector is mounted on the units PC board (see Figure 5). It controls four functions as demons- trated in Figure 12 and as detailed in Table 2.

Installation hints:

Prevent direct sunlight from reaching the detector

Keep wiring away from electrical power cables

Do not install behind partitions

Do not aim at heat sources

Mount on solid, stable surfaces

Do not expose to air drafts

Do not install outdoors

Troubleshooting guide: Step: Problem: 1 No reset from motion sensor. Description: Check voltage on Reset 1 input (BW-700 connector pin 6). Low voltage when LED in motion sensor is red. If constant low, remove the wire to the motion sensor and check again. Possible Causes: Standard mounting bracket not used and screws behind the PCB is shortcutting the sensor. Remove the screws and use the standard mounting bracket. BW-700 has no power
