PREFACE

It is hard to pick up a newspaper or listen to the news without hearing about globalization. Today the key issues surrounding modern industries are the global economy with its dramatic impact on the financial and labor markets and the technological innovation. Work and labor relations are under going waves of transformation, which interact with one another bringing further changes and new occupational divisions. The new global economy can be described as highly dynamic allowing trans-border financial flows for major market economies, which are made possible because of its new infrastructure.

Most economies prefer to speak globalization in terms of international interdependence and international economic integration. These terms refer to the degree to which economic events in one country affect others and the extent to which the market for goods, services, labor and capital can operate freely across national boundaries. According to UNCTAD (1993), the most common source of international economic integration is no longer the flow of trade between countries but the multinational companies (MNCs) which are described as a global web of companies which are replacing nationally specific firms. This means that production sites can be switched as companies seek out countries wit low labor costs as long as the process is cost effective.

The impact of economic globalization and diffusion of information technologies have been the major reason behind the firms going for lean production , downsizing,

restructuring consolidation and flexible management practices. All these have indirectly brought changes for better or for worse conditions of labor in all countries. Global restructuring has created millions of jobs in the newly industrialized countries and developing countries and the elimination of jobs from advanced industrialized countries.

The determination of employment structure across national boundaries depends on: -

the extent of international interdependence the level of sharing of new technologies Characteristics of labors expertise.
