In the grounds of the (now former) St Patricks

College, Manly, there is a sculpture that is, I suspect,
deliberately provocave. Its placement is such that it
can not be avoided, being opposite the main entrance
and along the main driveway to the sta and student
parking areas.

The sculpture is of a man who is doubled over, with
his head bowed, and his arms hanging down towards
the ground. In his le handor more accurately, in
the ngerps of his le handis a stone. The person
who looks at this sculpture is, I believe, never quite
sure if the man is picking the stone up, or in the
process of dropping it. That is, I suspect, a maer of
perspecve.

The sculpture is named aer todays Gospel, and it is
the kind of sculpture that should be located in the
grounds of a place for those in formaon for priestly
ordinaon. Such a sculpture should remind them, as it
should anyone who looks upon it, that the rst call of
every disciple is not to judge the sinfulness of others
but rather to search deep within their own heart and
embrace the call to conversion.

The call for the disciple is not to pick up the stone, but
to let them fall from our hands so that we can reach
out in love to our brothers and sisters who are no
dierent to themsinners called to conversion and
metanoia.

As we draw closer to the celebraon of the Great
Fesval of our redempon, as we embrace the call to
conversion that is Gods call to us, lets also be open to
recognising that we are not the only ones who have
receivedand so let the stones we might be holding
in our hands fall unused to the ground.

Responsorial Psalm
Response: With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness
of redempon.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be aenve
to the voice of my pleading.

If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness:
for this we revere you.

My soul is waing for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the Lord
more than watchman for daybreak.

Because with the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redempon,
Israel indeed he will redeem
from all its iniquity.

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
proper way, please be aware of the following:

When we process forward to receive Communion,
we are asked by the Australian Bishops to adopt a
common and unied gesture of reverence before
doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow of the
head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other form of
reverence, including a genuecon, should be
avoided.
Communion by selfinncon is never permied,
since we never take Communion but rather receive
Communion. Please refrain from this inappropriate
acon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
would respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling
to receive Communion while in procession, since
this is contrary to the nature of the Communion
procession. Your cooperaon with this request is
very much appreciated.
