After recent carbon 14 testing at the University of Arizona, experts say the manuscript was created in the early part of the fifteenth century, making it about a century older than previously believed. As for the coded pages themselves: still unknown. Filled with 240 vellum pages, most with colored drawings of unknown plants and nymphs surrounded by an ornate but inexplicable script, the document has been described as the worlds most mysterious manuscript. Since its discovery by rare book antiquarian Wilfred Voynich in 1912 in the Villa Mondragone near Rome, the manuscript named after him has defied all attempts to unravel it. Computer examination of the text has shown it indeed to be some kind of coherent language, not nonsense, as some have argued. Italian Inventors Enter Cold Fusion Arena

So instead of being thanked and encouraged for trying to produce an ecologically sustainable fuel that didnt come from petroleum deposits, Rossi was imprisoned on trumped up charges. Later, after one of his companies was forced into bankruptcy, he was again imprisonedfor not paying his creditors. Despite those traumatic experiences, it seems that he is one of those relentless inventors who doesnt give up. His Energy Catalyzer doesnt involve burning fuel. Only a tiny amount of hydrogen gas is consumed, which indicates a low energy nuclear reaction, not hydrogen combustion. Rossi and Focardis announcement didnt bring much positive attention from the mainstream media. In January those institutions either stayed away from the story or gave it the usual misleading spin. For instance, in referring to the 1989 announcement in which electrochemists Stanley Pons and Martin Fleishmann claimed to have demonstrated cold fusion, PhysOrg.com recently wrote but their experiment could not be reproduced. That was true only for a matter of months around 20 years ago. However what I consider the most outrageous untruth in the PhysOrg article is this: Since then, all other claims of cold fusion have been illegitimate. Whoever wrote that hadnt done their homework. All the writer had to do was to go to a serious website such as www.lenrcanr.org and see the huge collection of published scientific papers from laboratories around the world, many announcing excess heat and even transmutationchanging one element into another. The Fleischmann/Pons effect did indeed stretch accepted science beyond what was known about fusion, and prestigious hotfusion laboratories did fail to reproduce the effect during the months after the announcement, but is the media stuck back in 1989? Over the years the Fleischmann/Pons process has been replicated hundreds of times with variations. Im fed up with knee-jerk journalists repeating the so-called received wisdom. For instance, last month a writer in a British Columbia business magazine tossed off the phrase the cold fusion hoax of the late 1980s. Such phrases have created an unwarranted character assassination of the electrochemists Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, whose mistake was in prematurely announcing their discoverynot hoaxing. Meanwhile back in Italy at a press conference in Bologna attended by about 50 invited guests, Rossi and Focardi demonstrated their device. After a brief warm-up, its reaction chamber starts self-heating and they claim it can produce 12,400 watts of heat power with an input of just 400 watts into the electric heating element. They are well beyond the research phase; the plan is to start shipping devices for industrial use this spring and start mass production by the end of this year. The Italian scientists also claim transmutation, saying that their fusion reaction produces copper as well as cheap power. (They estimate that electricity can be generated at a cost of less than one cent per kilowatthoursignificantly less than coal or natural gas power plants.) It isnt the everymans backyard project, however; youd have to have a nuclear expert involved in building an Energy Catalyzer of this type. Rossi and Focardi say that the reaction produces radiation, which indicates that its at the level of atoms nuclei. However they add that the radiation is completely shielded by lead so that none of it escapes the apparatus. No radioactivity is left in the fusion cell after its turned off, so theres no nuclear waste. Sepp Hasslberger reports that Rossis reactor can be run without problems in an industrial environment. It is expected that industrial-sized reactor units will be mounted in shipping containers for easy transportability. It will be more difficult to obtain permits for individual household-type units, because of the requirement for complete automatic and safe operation under all circumstances. For now, trained personnel that care for maintenance are still necessary, so household units seem to be about a decade in the future yet. Early this year Rossi wrote on his blog that there will be no more demonstrations before the start-up of his companys proposed one-megawatt power plant.

n Energy Catalyzer is the new item on the energy frontier at the time of this writing. Italian engineer Andrea A. Rossi and Professor Sergio Focardi of the University of Bologna announced a technology for a reaction that produces excess heatat low cost and in quantities that would make it commercially useful. It involves a catalytic reaction between nickel, hydrogen, and some secret elements, but they avoid calling it Rossi and Focardi cold fusion. At this time it looks like the Italians do have a viable technology that uses commonly available materials, doesnt produce carbon dioxide, doesnt produce radioactive waste, and will be economical to build. Will their government support their venture, or at least refrain from interfering? As reported on Rossis website and by researcher Sepp Hasslberger, the Italian inventor already knows what happens to an energy-related technology that vested interests consider disruptive to their profits. In the 1970s and 1980s Rossi was building garbage disposal facilities that burned household garbage and used the recovered heat. He also learned how to turn garbage into fuel that could be burned in the same way as coal, oil and gas. By 1989 his company, Petroldragon, was making 20 tons of fuel oil a day. Then the attacks began. Government bureaucrats began by taxing his fuel as if he was producing alcohol, making his fuel extremely expensive. Perhaps they feared loss of some fuel-tax revenue, but the tax rate they hit Rossi with was overkill. Rossi fought the unjust tax, and then the bureaucracy ramped up the level of challenge. The bureaucrats claimed that the garbage stockpile in his factory wasnt raw material for his process but instead was a

A Political Earthquake Changes the Landscape of Mainstream Archaeology

ith the removal of President Mubarak, Egypts futurethough uncertainhas, many believe, entered a positive new era. Egyptology, the scientific investigation of ancient Egypt, is also clearly going through momentous changes. In a late-breaking development, Zahi Hawass, the virtual embodiment of current-day Egyptology, who now finds himself facing extraordinary new allegations of nepotism and corruption, has also been forced to resign from his newly created ministerial post. In that position and previously as Egypts Director of Antiquities he has, for many years, maintained a virtual dictatorship over mainstream Egyptology. In what many observers see as a transparent effort to put a positive spin on his predicament, Hawass declared that he can no longer protect Egypts ancient sites from looting and, thus, is bowing out. There is, however, more to the story, much more. On February 10, 2011, the eyes of the world were on Hosni Mubarak. Earlier that day, President Obama had been briefed by the CIA that the Egyptian leader was going to announce he would step down as Egyptian president with immediate effect. Instead, Mubarak appeared on Egyptian television and defied the wishes of his people, who for seventeen days had been shouting that he should get out. On July 22, 2009, Mubarak in 2007 American-Egyptian journalist Aladdin Elaasar had published The Last Pharaoh: Mubarak and the Uncertain Future of Egypt in the Obama Age in which he predicted precisely the scenario that began on January 25, 2011. Mubarak had become president on October 14, 1981, following the assassination of President Anwar El Sadat. With elections scheduled in September 2011, it was assumedbefore the proteststhat the octogenarian would pass the torch to his son Gamal, thus creating a virtual Mubarak Dynasty. When, during the riots, Mubarak said he would not run for reelection, the people did not expect the decision to apply to his son, and they did expect any election to be rigged in Gamals favor. Protesters understood that only when Mu-

barak had actually given up power, could they be certain he had truly gone. For thirty years, Mubarak had shown that Egypt was ruled by a Pharaoh, in the worst sense of that word: someone who felt he ruled by divine decree and was not responsible to anyonea dictator who had amassed an estimated seventy-billion-dollar personal fortune, and who now intended to pass the torch to his son, who would continue the dynasty for decades to come. Mubarak, says Elaaser, actually believed he was the reincarnation of Ramses II. One of the best known pharaohs, Ramses may have ruled for 66 years and is said to have lived to be 99. Mubarak was only halfway there on the rule part, but his reign was still the third longest since Ramses. In August 2006, he had spent millions restoring and relocating a colossal statue of Ramses II from Cairos Ramses Square to the Egyptian Museum. Many observers saw the move as a hint of his personal interest in this ancient Egyptian ruler. On February 11, 2011, the man who had defied the nations wishes and declared he would not leave until the September elections, fled Cairo. His vice-president subsequently declared the military was now in

charge of the transition. An era had ended. All had been predicted by Aladdin Elaasar, who had also warned that change in Egypts regime would have profound effects on the region and on U.S. interests. George Bushs attempt to bring democracy to the Middle East might indeed have come true, not because of any part played by the U.S., but rather because of true democratic tools like mass protest. Once Mubarak had fallen, street protests spread throughout the Arab world. The future is unclear. Egypt really is a large, open-air museum and hence archaeology and the business of visiting archaeological sites is a key to power. For years, Dr. Zahi Hawass, Egypts leading Egyptologist, has ruled supremely and was even named by Time Magazine as one of the worlds 100 most influential people. In Egypt, he has been considered by many the second most influential person after Mubarak. In Egypt, archaeology is politics. In the turmoil of the protests, when Mubarak first attempted to reform his government, his plan had immediate repercussions for Egyptian Antiquities. First, he removed

efore Dr. Raymond Moody named the Near-Death Experience (NDE) and popularized it in his 1975 bestselling book Life After Life, very few people were aware of the phenomenon. Over the past 35 years, however, there have been dozens of books discussing the NDEa phenomenon which suggests that there is an energy body or spirit body which separates from the physical body at death and lives on in another dimension of reality. But skeptics and debunkers now question new NDE reports, claiming that reading about such experiences has programmed people to imagine or to expect the phenomenological features of the NDE, including being out of body, passing through a dark tunnel, seeing and passing into the light, meeting deceased relatives or friends, having a panoramic life review, and being told by a deceased relative or spirit guide of some kind that the person must return to the physical body as it is not yet his or her time to transition to their side of the veil. Or the person may just consciously make up a story based on what he has read so that his name will make it into a book. But, whether or not people consciously make up stories or are unconsciously programmed to expect such things, it is difficult to discount the earliest reports of such experiences some of which took place long before Dr. Moody began his investigationsince there was no body of stories to draw from. Moodys interest in the phenomenon was a result of hearing the story of Dr. George Ritchie, a psychiatrist, while Moody was a student at the University of Virginia in 1965. Ritchies experience took place on December 21, 1943, when he was a 20-year-old Army private at Camp Barkeley, Texas. Suffering from double pneumonia and with a temperature of 106 degrees, Ritchie was discovered that morning to have no vital signs and was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty, after which a sheet was pulled over his head. Nine minutes later a ward boy began prepping the body for transfer to the morgue, when he saw Ritchies hand move. A doctor was summoned, adrenalin was injected into the heart, and Ritchie was breathing again. Ritchie vividly recalled the period during which he was dead. He remembered looking at his body in bed and not realizing that he was looking at himself. He recalled traveling out-of-body to a distant town, then racing back to the camp hospital to find his physical body, but then had trouble finding it until he saw his ring on a hand hanging out from the sheet covering the body. As he sat next to his body wondering what was going on, he was awe-struck by a radiant presence and then saw every single episode of his entire life. Lady Primrose had recently been abandoned by an abusive husband. The man beside her was the Central European seer who had constructed and polished the mirror on the wall. He claimed it could conjure up images of anybody in the world, even indicating if that person was dead. Lady Primrose hoped that, in gazing into its depths, she would find out where her husband was. She hoped she would learn he was no longer alive. As the Scottish noblewoman watched, mist rose from the surface of the mirror. She saw the mist stream away on either side to reveal the interior of a church. A wedding was taking place; a clergyman was asking the bride and groom to join hands. Lady Primrose gasped. The bridegroom was her husband! Just then, she saw another man race up the aisle. She watched as he drew his sword and lunged at the bridegroom. Before she could see the interlopers face, mist enveloped the mirror. The chaotic

as the sun and the Virgin instructed the child to tell the monks of a nearby church about what she had just experienced. When they dug at the indicated location, the icon was recovered. A copy was sent to Czar Ivan the Terrible, who had a cloister built on the site. Matrena, as well as her mother, then joined the religious community that was installed there. In 1612, St. Sergei was said to have appeared to Bishop Arseni. The saintwho had died in 1392 told the bishop that the Lady of Kazan would intervene in battle. Hence, the icon was brought to lead the troops of Prince Pozharski that were trying to free Moscow. True to the prophecy, on November 27, 1612, the Kremlin was liberated. Afterward, whenever Russia went into battle, the Virgin of Kazan or one of its copies was carried before the army. Later, the Virgin would rescue Russia from Napoleons troops. In September 1812, Marshal Koutesov took the icon from Moscows Cathedral and rallied his troops to cut off Napoleons supply routes. The icon is thus often considered to be a palladium, an image upon which the safety of a city or a countryMother Russiawas said to depend. At the time of the Russian Revolution, the basilica housing the icon was destroyed, apparently to prove that God did not exist. As great sledges and rams knocked down the church, loudspeakers blared: You see, there is no God! We destroy the church of the so-called protectress of Russia, and nothing happens! A green plot of grass in front of Lenins tomb marked the site where the Basilica of Our Lady of Kazan had once stood as the national Marian Shrine of Russia. But what happened to the icon at the time of the Russian Revolution? Though some argue that it was sold by the Emperors family to sustain itself in exile (a hope that never materialized for them), it is more probable that the icon was sold to help pay for the Bolshevik Revolution. he Virgin of Kazan is one of the most revered Russian religious icons. Its disappearance at the time of the Russian Revolution was a catastrophe, but its resurgence and its link with Pope John Paul II and Fatima has confirmed the icons mythical status of securing the fate of Mother Russia. The fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 not only meant a new era for politicians; it also changed the religious landscape of Mother Russiaa once extremely religious country. Communism, after all, had been atheist, whereas the new Russia was assumed to have freedom of religion again. Pope John Paul II had attempted to improve relations with the Orthodox Church, though a visit to Russia itself was blocked by the Russian branch, which saw the Vatican as trying to take advantage of the situation. In November 2003, Russian president Vladimir Putin did meet the pope in Rome. On that occasion, an icon known as the Virgin of Kazan was brought from the Popes private chapel into the Vatican Library. Putin watched as John Paul blessed the icon and then Putin himself kissed it. Few observers seemed to realize the significance of the event but Putin and the Pope did. Discovered on July 8, 1579, in the city of Kazan, the Virgin of Kazan is one of Russias most sacred relics. Interestingly, it is said that the Virgin Mary herself, in an apparition, revealed the artifacts buried location to a little girl, Matrena. The icon apparently shone to Matrena as bright

When the Political Story Barely Scratches the Surface, What Is Really Going On?
Western Europe in 1935. On April 15, 1953, the English adventurer Mike MitchellHedgesknown for his infamous crystal skullwas approached by letter from a business friend, Arthur Hillman, who was negotiating the purchase of a collection of great historical and artistic value. It was initially referred to as The Louis Tussauds Collection, apparently because it had been on display in Tussauds museum in Blackpool (England). Between April 1953 and September 1953, several letters were exchanged between Mitchell-Hedges and Hillman, until, on September 23, 1953, Mitchell-Hedges finally purchased the icon. Mitchell-Hedges never came to see the artifact prior to purchasing it, and it is therefore unclear whether he fully realized what he was buying.
