Egypt: Nile River, boat building

Boat building along the Nile River has gone on from the earliest of times. The Nile River, the longest in the world, was what made civilization possible in ancient Egypt. It brought water each year for the irrigation of Egypt's crops. It was an effective means of transportation for people and cargo of all kinds. Greece: Corinth, Corinthian columns

Corinthian columns at Corinth in south-central Greece. The remains of the ancient city lie about 50 miles west of Athens, at the eastern end of the Gulf of Corinth. On mainland Greece, Corinth was the main center of worship of Aphrodite (Roman: Venus) goddess of love and beauty. On his second missionary journey the Apostle Paul spent 11/2 years preaching the Gospel at Corinth.

Rolling tomb stone

A heavy round stone used to roll down a sloping channel cut in stone to seal the entrance to a tomb. A large stone (perhaps similar to this one) was placed over the entrance to Yahshua' tomb, the tomb was sealed, and a Roman guard set watch. When Yahshuah arose, the Angel of the Lord rolled back the stone while the guards slept.

Tiberias, recreational center on the Sea of Galilee

Tiberias lies about 12 miles south of the Jordan River's entrance into the Sea of Galilee. Tiberias was founded by Herod Antipas in 18 AD and named after the Roman emperor Tiberius. The combination of a warm climate year round, nearby hot springs for bathing, and scenic views of the lake and mountains make Tiberias Israel's most popular resort city.

Yerusalem: Citadel of David, eastward view

Eastward looking view of the Citadel of David at Yerusalem. The Citadel was a fort probably built by Herod the Great to guard the western entrance to the city. This fort was later extensively added to and strengthened by the Crusaders. The large square tower (picture center) on the Citadel's northeast corner was probably built by Herod (repaired by Crusaders) and called Phasael (called today David's Tower).

The Dead Sea (Salt Sea) as seen from Masada. The Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake between Israel and Jordan. It is the lowest body of water on earth at 1,312 feet below sea level. Because of the high salt content, nothing lives in or around the sea. Sodom and Gomorrah lie submerged beneath the southern end of the sea.

The Jordan River has its headwaters in Lebanon and the southeastern slopes of Mount Hermon. It flows south through the Sea of Galilee and finally drains into the Dead Sea at 1,312 feet below sea level. It was in the Jordan River that Yahshuah was baptized by John the Baptist.

Marinas and high-rises reflect the present day prosperity of Israel's Tel Aviv-Jaffa on the Mediterranean coast. Today it is Israel's major business and cultural center. Jaffa has a long history, but Tel Aviv is a comparatively new city founded in 1909. In Old Testament times, David and Solomon occupied Jaffa and used it as a port to receive timber from Lebanon.

Loaves and fish

Israel: Galilee, Sea of, the miracle of the loaves & fish
From only five loaves of bread and two fish Yahshuah fed 5,000 men plus women and children by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. They all ate till they were filled and afterward Yahshuah' disciples collected 12 baskets full of fragments. The Sea of Galilee (Tiberias) is a lake in northern Israel through which the Jordan River flows. Many episodes in the life of Messiah took place on or around this historic lake.

Yerusalem: Dead Sea Scrolls display at the Shrine of the Book

The Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum (Museon Yisrael) in Yerusalem houses the Dead Sea Scrolls that were found by a young Bedouin shepherd in a cave of Qumran in 1947. These scrolls have helped scholars push back substantially the date of the earliest known Hebrew Old Testament manuscripts.

Yerusalem: donkey & young woman along a city byway

A young woman riding a donkey along a city byway of Yerusalem. The donkey has been used as a beast of burden since the earliest of times. Donkeys are sure-footed animals that can carry heavy loads over rough ground. Perhaps Mary rode such an animal on her journeys. Yahshuah rode on an ass (donkey) during His triumphal entry into Yerusalem.

Mount Herimon

Mount Herimon
Mount Hermon as seen from Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee. Mount Hermon is a snowcapped mountain just west of Damascus on the border between Lebanon and Syria. It rises to 9,232 feet and is the highest peak just east of the Mediterranean Sea. It is widely believed that Yahshua' transfiguration took place in the vicinity of Hermon.
