MORAL Is utilitarianism a hedonist moral theory? Discuss why or why not?

Yes. As we learned, hedonism is one of the four theses of utilitirianism. By the way, utility is the degree to which an act produces pleasure. Hedonism is the thesis that pleasure or happiness is the good that we seek and that we should seek.

What is your stand towards Ethical Relativism? Are you a Moral absolutist if you disagree with Ethical relativism? How does moral absolutism differ from moral objectivism? As a Muslim, I believe and realize that in Quran written the right and wrong path that should be followed by human in living life. So, by this statement, I disagree with Ethical relativism because I dont believe in the theory about there is no objective standard of right and wrong, even in principle. Yes, I am a Moral absolutist. The different between moral absolustism and moral objectivism: Absolutism only deals in absolutes, there is no shade of gray because everything is either black or white. For example, in any situation, an absolutist believes in the rules that we should never tell lie. Differently, objectivism or relativism looks at the circumstances behind moral belief and then makes an assessment based on whether the action was right according to that set of ideas. For example, in certain situation, an objectivist believes we could lie to help others or to achieve our objective.

From Kant's moral philosophy, the Categorical imperative defines the difference between morally valid and morally invalid principles of reasoning about action. Where as the Hypothetical imperative, is dependent on the interest in a certain outcome. This is the different between categorical imperative and hypothical imperative.

The difference between a categorical imperative and hypothetical imperative: categorical imperative based on reason alone. Its something you have to do for the sake of itself. Example: a person who is short of money and intends to take out a loan promising to repay it but actually has no intention of doing so. for that situation, a logical contradiction is readily apparent because the breaking of promises to be universal law. hypothetical imperative is an imperative based on inclination or desire, something you should do because you want to attain some goal. I believe that this is a very important course because of the definition of Moral Philosophy itself. It is the philosophical study of morality. And this course is the introduction to introduce the student to what is philosophical study of morality. In this course we learnt about how to what should I do? what are values?; what is the meaning of the terms good and bad?; is morality objective?: why should I be moral? and a lot more about philosophy. It is a very interesting course it taught me more about good life.

UNGS 2050 - ETHICS AND FIQH FOR EVERYDAY LIFE FORUM 3 DATE DUE 30/11/2012 - FRIDAY There are several educators who solely focused on the value of intellectual achievement (IQ) of their students but denounced the act of nurturing the value of spirituality Discuss: [Ada pendidik yang

If we are on their shoes, which path should we follow? Sometimes, the pressure from many factors affect this situation. I believe that the educators who solely focused on the value of intellectual achievement, have their own reason. But, as a pure educators that hold the great responsibility, we should ask ourselves, why we chosed to be an educator, in the first place? It is important to keep our head clear and strongly believe that education is not only about intellectual achievement but also humanising the human. 4.UNGS 2050 - ETHICS AND FIQH FOR EVERYDAY LIFE DATE DUE 7/12/2012 - FRIDAY QUESTION: What is your opinion on the article on Moment for Reflection - A Mothers Prayer. A Moment for Reflection Issue 3 / July - September 1993 A Mother\'s Prayer Z. Sarikaya I was allowed to stay in hospital at my sons bedside not as his mother but as a doctor. He was taken into care in a special room in the hospital, along with other children also thought to be affected by the polio epidemic. I could hear the voices of children crying in the ward at the other end of the corridor. My own poor child could only say mum in fear while he was being examined. A little later, he fell asleep. After the examination the specialist took me aside. He had a look of deep concern and sorrow on his face: -I am very sorry, doctor. It could be polio, he said. I stared at him blankly, not believing what I was hearing. I could believe that some other mothers child caught polio but I could never imagine that such a disaster would touch my own child. I no longer felt like a doctor but like a mother, waiting at her childs bedside in an agony of anxiety. -But he has not caught polio yet, has he? I asked again. No, not yet. I hope he will not, the specialist answered. When he looked at my face, he noticed my worry and went on: -He is sleeping now. Youd better go and get some sleep, too. Ill call you if there is any change. I decided to do as I was advised. It was already very late, past midnight. I had been very busy since five oclock in the morning, along with the other doctors. Everyone had been working very hard as the epidemic had got worse. I looked at my sons red lace, longing to help him, to take away his pain, but there was nothing I could do except wait. I wanted to take him in my arms and surround him with all my love. But that was not possible then, so after a time I left his bedside and headed home. The house was still and quiet when I opened the door. My husband had gone to Chicago on business. I did not tell him about our sons condition. I did not want him to panic. Besides, if there was no change in his condition overnight, chances of his not getting polio would be very high. I had to take some pills to help me sleep. I was deep in sleep when I heard the phone ringing. I got out of bed. It was four oclock. The person on the phone was a woman, obviously very agitated and anxious. -Is that the doctor? she asked. I heaved a sigh of relief as I understood that I was being called out to visit a patient. As the woman described her sons condition, I realized that it was probably another case of polio. After taking a note of her name and address I couldnt help taking a minute to phone the hospital to find out about my son: luckily, there was no change. I felt utterly alone as I drove through the streets of the silent, sleeping city to the womans home. After some time, I noticed that this was the poorest part of town. On reaching the address, I stopped the car and got out. The desperate woman had been waiting and ran out to me, holding a candle. She grabbed my hand and said urgently, almost shouting: -Be quick doctor! Be quick! I looked at her face, which was wet with crying. I couldnt tell in the dark if the woman was young or old. I was quite shocked when I stepped into the cold one-room house. Even though I saw lots of different kinds of patients in my job, I had not seen poverty such as this before. Three thin children with pale, bony faces were sitting around an empty table in the corner of the room dimly lit by the one candle the mother was

holding. The rest of the room was quite dark. However, I could just make out a child doubled up in pain at the other end of the room, moaning under a very old, patched blanket. The boy was about five years old, very thin and very weak. I told the woman I must go out to call the hospital. I did so from a telephone box in the market near the house and asked them to send an ambulance at once. I went back and examined the other children. They were very weak but not in danger of polio. Just then the sick boy started to cry. The mother held my hand pleadingly. She wanted to learn what the illness was and how serious it was. I did not have the courage to tell her the truth. -Your child is very ill, but we will do whatever we can, I said. After lovingly caressing her sons hair, the woman turned to me and said: -Lets pray. Although I had been visiting patients for years, I had never met one who offered to pray. I felt this woman must know something that I did not, so I agreed. I joined the children and the mother in their prayer. As the woman prayed, her mild soft voice pleading so sincerely touched me to the heart. For a moment the hospital corridor came to mind again, the worried face of the specialist, my own dear sons lovely face. Though far from the hospital, I felt just as if I was at my sons bedside. I saw him as if standing in front of me and smiling. I tried to clear my mind of this picture. I watched the woman and the children still praying, now silently. The sincerity of their faith moved me so much that I could not help saying out loud and with utmost sincerity: -Our Lord, do please accept these prayers! The mother then went over to the bedside of her sick child. The boy was sleeping peacefully. She straight away turned towards me and said joyfully: -Do you see? Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate, has accepted our prayer. I was totally lost for words. The boy did not even wake up while being carried to the ambulance. By the time we got to the hospital, his breathing and pulse had returned to normal. I drove back to the womans home with the good news and, before leaving again for my days work at hospital, I gave her what money I had. Ill call back again tomorrow evening, I said. As I walked to my car, I looked up at the sky. The sun was rising and everything was becoming lit up. I was not worried this time as I drove to the hospital. A voice inside me was saying that my son would meet me smiling when I next saw him. From this amazing story, I believe that we could learn a lot. As a human, we should always pray to Allah and have faith to Gods determination. As a Muslim, we should have faith that Allah determines everything. We should believe that our prayer on the earth, will probably change the desiny in the heaven. 5. UNGS 2050 - ETHICS AND FIQH FOR EVERYDAY LIFE FORUM 5 DATE DUE 14/12/2012 - FRIDAY QUESTION Relate the following news highlight with ethics. In the can liquid cocaine in cans By STEVEN DANIEL -18/11/2012 stevend@thestar.com.my Unfruitful disguise: Comm Noor Rashid showing one of the processed pineapple and coconut milk cans. KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities are still busy opening some 23,000 cans of canned pineapples and coconut milk, believed to contain 76kg of cocaine worth at least RM22mil. Only 30% of the cargo have been inspected so far, with 384 cans found to contain 200gm of the liquidised drug each. Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police had received a tip-off from the US Drug Enforcement Administration that the drug shipment from Guyana, South America, was expected to make a stop in Port Klang en route to Mozambique. We decided to work together with the Selangor Customs Department. A day after the ship docked at Port Klang, we boarded it at 2am on Nov 12 to inspect the containers. Inside one container, we found 980 boxes of canned processed pineapple and coconut milk, he told reporters in Bukit Aman here yesterday. After opening almost 100 cans on the ship and analysing the contents with a portable drug testing kit, the team finally hit pay dirt when one was found positive with cocaine. The cargo was then seized and handed over to

the police forensics and chemistry laboratory. So far, they found 384 cans with liquidised cocaine inside and did not discount the possibility of discovering more. A police source said the drug syndicate based in Guyana could be powerful as it had the means of packing the drugs into cans and the even more sophisticated technique of mixing cocaine with other liquid. The syndicate probably has some kind of special marking on the boxes with cocaine. But because we don\'t have that information, we have to go through the time-consuming process of opening and inspecting every can, said the source. It is learnt that the cargo was to have been transferred to another ship in Port Klang before continuing its journey to Mozambique, where some sort of distillation technique would be used to extract the cocaine. Each can was labelled with printed information that it was manufactured in Guyana and weighed about 400gm. The cans with cocaine had about 200gm of the liquidised drug. Comm Noor Rashid said Interpol and all relevant international drug monitoring agencies had been notified of the seizure. Investigations, he said, were now under way in both the originating and destination countries. It is unbelievable the syndicate uses cans as their cover, but it is not impossible. In this new millenium here are a lot of things that we should believe because they are not impossible anymore. In ethics it is indeed their action are very unethical.

COUNSELING; After going through the powerpoint notes and viewing the three videos related to counseling skills, discuss the merits (and possible demerits) of applying counseling skills in your personal and professional lives. Please give specific examples in your postings.

As a teacher, I believe that counselling skills are among the most important skills in perfecting the profession. Actually, the skills of counselling is very interesting. It is more to knowing and discovering the humans. The students are our clients. If we discover their feeling, understanding their soul, we will understand that they have their own potential to achieve the better achevements. For example, to teach English, we should discover the students interests or hobbies. After that we will approach them, through the things that they like most. This is one of the interesting skills in counselling. In this situation, the students will learn in fun circmstances.

To solve the problem of a problematic student, firstly we have to learn and understand the problem of the particular person, in this case: A.M. This is in the first stage; problem definition is the stage where i have to undersatnd the students problem thoroughly. The next step is problem analysis; analyze A.Ms problem from different views. Then, determine the objective. After that, generate some possible solutions to help A.M, and finally analyze the solution as reflection. It is a good option to ask for the school counsellor for some help in solving the problem of our student. But in this case, I will use the most proper method to refer to the counseller in order to protect students identity and reliability. I will never mention the students name or details, but only the problem as a general question in order to ask for the councellors idea or some solutions. This is the way to get a different perspective from an experienced person that will help me to solve A.Ms problem.
