The GPS is required to avoid any inter-site (between BS) interferences In a TDD system
The F/B ratio of the SUs is preventing the other base station from interfering There is only one frequency for receive and transmit. If the base stations are not synchronized, when BS#1 transmit and BS#2 receives, the transmission of BS#1 interferes with the transmission of SU2
