and screening for space borne applications and other systems requiring the highest levels of reliability and radiation tolerance. These platforms include launch vehicles, satellites and the International Space Station.
DESIGN
The manufacturing of hybrids for space applications involves enhancements in the area of layout design, processing and screening. The principle goal of the hybrid mechanical design is to improve the ease of wire bonding and inspection.
All of DDC's space grade terminals use ceramic packaging. Ceramic packages eliminate the potential hermeticity problems associated with the glass beads of KOVAR (metal) packages. In addition, ceramic packages facilitate improved thermal properties and have reduced weight and lower cost. HYBRID SCREENING FOR HIGH RELIABILITY Visual screening for space grade hybrids includes rigorous inspection for damaged die, broken or crossed wires, particles, and contamination.
RADIATION HARDNESS In addition to the screening process, DDC pays particular attention to the technologies used in the design of space grade 1553 products. DDC's 1553 series of products combine bipolar transceivers with ASICs and SRAM on Honeywell Solid-State Electronics Center's (HSSEC) 0.8 micron RICMOS (Radiation Insensitive CMOS) radiation hard process. This results in a device that is radiation hardened to a total dose of 1 MRAD(Si) and Latch-up immune. The Space ACE (BU61582) has a Single Event Upset (SEU) rate of 3.6 x 10-5 errors/device-day [Linear Energy Transfer (LET) threshold of 59 MeV/mg/cm2]. The BU-65142 Remote Terminal has a SEU rate of 5.3 x 10-6 errors/device-day (LET threshold of 59 MeV/mg/cm2). THE TRUE HI-REL SOLUTION Both the BU-61582 and BU-65142 are available to SMD (Standardized Military Drawings), 5962-93065 and 5962-89798, respectively. The combination of DDC's long history of producing high reliability microelectronics, DDC's Class K DSCC

Additional screening procedures for the space hybrids include: 100% Non-destructive wire bond pull Condition "A" Visual Inspection Particle Impact Noise Detection (PIND) testing with the use of getter material Radiographic (X-ray) Inspection 320 hour burn-in (the burn-in for Class H devices is 160 hours) Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA) testing
Certification, and DDC's ability to integrate a full MIL-STD-1553 space grade terminal in a single package result in a low power, low cost, low real estate, high performance, high reliability solution for all MIL-STD1553 space level requirements. These devices are suited for all space applications, including Launch Vehicles, Military Satellites, Research Satellites, the International Space Station, and the vastly growing Commercial Telecommunication Satellite arena. DDC's MIL-STD-1553 Space level products are the true hi-rel solution.
