Introduction

The aim of this tutorial is to familiarize you with the basic features of INtools getting the program up and running, creating a minimal setup for your plant, and all the basic instrumentengineering activities for each module. This tutorial will not make you an INtools expert, but it will provide you with the fundamental understanding, skills, and practical experience you need to begin using INtools with confidence. In the course of the tutorial, you will be guided step-by-step to create a loop with its associated wiring, line, and instrument process data. You will also perform calculations, generate specification sheets, loop drawings, and installation details (hook-ups). We recommend that you: Make a backup copy of the database before using it with the tutorial. Work through all the objectives in a given task in one sitting.

The tutorial is divided into two parts: one for the System and Domain Administrators and the other for Instrument Engineers. If you are a novice, we strongly recommend going through the entire tutorial thoroughly.

INtools 6.0 Tutorial Introduction

Administration Options
The System Administration tasks that you will learn include the following: How to initialize and assign a domain. How to create a department. How to add users to INtools user list. How to assign a Domain Administrator (responsible for the domain) to a domain.

The Domain Administration tasks that you will learn include the following: How to define a plant owner. How to set up the Plant-Area-Unit (PAU) hierarchy. How to create a unit and define tag and loop naming conventions. How to define a group and assign users to the group. How to define the access rights for a group. How to add user-defined fields to the Instrument Index.

Instrument Engineering Options

If starting the tutorial here, you will go to a unit where the administration items have already been created. General

Open a domain in INtools.

Instrument Index module

Create loops and associated tags. Define instrument type profiles. Create P&ID drawing numbers. Create lines. Customize and use the Instrument Index module browse feature. Generate and print out reports.

INtools 6.0 Tutorial Introduction

Process Data and Calculation modules

Create lines. Define line process data. Define instrument process data (flow elements, control valves, etc.) Calculate a flow element (FE). Calculate a control valve (CV).

Instrument Specifications module

Create a specification sheet for an instrument. Create a form data template. Create a multi-tag (see-list) specification. Complete a specification sheet that includes process data and calculation data. Perform revisions on specification sheets. Print a specification sheet.

Spec Binder module

Create a Technical Specification. Add Form Notes and General Notes to a Technical Specification. Edit and revise specification sheets from a Technical Specification. Generate and print out reports.

Wiring module

Create panel-strip-terminal defaults and copy them to your plant. Create cable-set-wire defaults and copy them to your plant. Assign tags to DCS channels. Connect cables / wires as appropriate. Design the wiring for specific control loops and display the loop drawings.

INtools 6.0 Tutorial Introduction

Loop Drawings module

View and modify a loop drawing using the SmartLoop generator. Change settings and include annotations for SmartLoop drawings. Create block types and blocks. Create block-tag associations. Enter revisions. Browse macros. Generate a loop drawing.

Hook-Ups module

Create hook-up types and hook-ups. Assign tag numbers to hook-ups. Generate a bill of material and material usage.

Browser module

Create a customized browser. Manipulate INtools data from your browser.

You will learn about INtools by generating some typical control loops, starting with the definition of the loop and its components in the Instrument Index module. In the course of this objective, you will learn: How to create a loop with associated components. How to fill in a specification sheet. How to create wiring connections for the loop. How to generate loop drawings and installation detail drawings.

Your tutorial will use the Demo P&ID schematics 101-PID01-001 which is attached to the tutorial. There is also an interconnection wiring block diagram attached to this tutorial to help you understand the wiring part of this tutorial. Note

You should make a backup copy of the database if you or other users intend to repeat this tutorial.

Throughout the tutorial, you will open new screens and use new options. While some of these are explained here in detail, we encourage you to browse through the INtools Users Guide and Online Help to gain knowledge and help.
