Diagnosis and Management of RheumatoidArthritis

Management of the Young Febrile Child with No Source: New Approaches for a Hot Topic
Pediatric providers frequently face the challenge of evaluating febrile children 0-3 years of age who appear nontoxic and have no localizing finding on history or physical exam. A variety of guidelines has been developed to assist. Unfortunately, many of these guidelines are based on outdated evidence. Recent developments, including the wide use of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, new information regarding urinary tract infections, and broader recognition of HSV infections, have altered our approach to the care of these children. Building on a review of these recent developments, this talk will describe an up-to-date approach to the evaluation and management of young febrile children.

The clinical features of rheumatoid arthritis will be described along with the appropriate laboratory studies and X-rays, followed by a discussion of management strategies. The key concepts of early diagnosis, careful delineation of the extent of the disease and projected prognosis, aggressive management strategy, and the use of objective criteria for a treat-to-target approach will be given.
