PARS HAT V AYESH EV

THE L IG HT OF T HE MESSI AH
Ra bbi Ar i Kahn
And Ya'akov settled in the land in which his fathers dwelled.( 37:1)

The days of my dwellings are 130 years, few and bad have been
the days of my life.. (47:9)

Settled: Ya'akov wished to settle in tranquillity, but the anger of [the

episode of] Yosef confronted (literally: "jumped") him. The righteous wish
to live in tranquillity. G-d says, is it not sufficient that they have a share
awaiting them in the next world, they wish to live in tranquillity in this
world as well! (Rashi 37:2)

(And G-d) said to Avraham, you shall know that your descendants will be
strangers in a land which is not theirs, they will be slaves and abused for
400 years. And the nation which enslaves them will be judged by me. They
will subsequently leave with great fortune. The fourth generation will return
here, for the sin of the Emori will not be complete until then. (15:13-16)

The Holy One blessed be He said, ‘If they do teshuva I will redeem them
[after 4] generations, if not I will redeem them [after 400] years.’ (Michilta
Drebbi Yishmael Bo Parsha 14)

And the Midianites sold him to Egypt to Potiphar (37:36)
And Yosef was brought down to Egypt, where he was purchased by
Potiphar (39:1)

What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover his blood? Let us sell him
to the Ishma'elites and let not our hands be upon him, for he is our brother
and our flesh, and his brothers acquiesced.
, "let us not kill him, for he is our brother and our flesh"
We have found this. Do you recognize it? Is it your son's coat?
(37:32)

And it came to pass at that time, and Yehuda parted ways with (literally,
went down from) his brothers.(38:1)
They said, 'You are the one who said to sell him! Had you said, return him
to his father, we would have listened to you.
‘And it came to pass at that time’-R. Shmuel the son of Nachman said...The
brothers were busy in the selling of Yosef, Yosef was busy with his sackcloth
and fasting, Reuven was busy with his sackcloth and fasting, Ya'akov was
busy with his sackcloth and fasting, Yehuda was busy taking a wife for
himself, and G-d was busy creating the light of the Kin Messiah. ‘And it
came to pass at that time and Yehuda parted ways...’before the first
enslavement is born, the final redeemer is born.' (Midrash Rabba 85:1)
A man found him (Yosef) wandering, lost in a field. The man asked him,
‘What are you seeking?’ He (Yosef) said, ‘I am seeking my brothers. Tell me,
please, where they are grazing (their flocks).’ The man said, ‘They left
here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dotan.’ Yosef went after his
brothers and found them in Dotan.” (37:15-17)
And now do not be saddened that you have sold me into this
(slavery/foreign land), for G-d has sent me ahead to be a source of
sustenance for you. For these two years there is famine in the land, and
there will be another five years before any sowing and harvesting. And G-d
has sent me ahead of you to set aside for you a vestige of the land, and to
be a sustainer for you for great refuge. And now, it is not you who has sent
me here but G-d...(47:5-8).

She said, “Do you recognize who owns this ring, staff, and coat?
(38:25)
Rav Yochanan said, G-d said to Yehuda, ‘You said to your father, `We have
found this. Do you recognize it? Is it your son's coat?(37:32)` By your life,
