Allison de Hoop EADM 425, College of Education Cynthia Baum February 12, 2013 Outcome 1: Evolution of education as a changing,

socially responsive organism, shaped by community, culture, location, government policy, dominant norms and privileges and apply to your own philosophy of thinking. My reflections on this assignment/process: Painting #1 When I was young I always liked doodling, and I most often liked school. I would regularly doodle and draw pencils, rulers, books the physical things we used every day in our classroom. This painting was like me getting those images out of my system, using them to represent education for the last time. Now I view those symbols as a historical vision of education, not to be taken seriously in our present day. Note about the cut/pasted image of the perfect, perfect Dick and Jane family: I have only recently come to realize that my white, middle class nuclear family is not the norm, nor should it be portrayed as such in our classrooms. Since this was a new revelation I chose to cut/paste it its like adding it on now that I know it. It is on this painting because that image is something I want to leave behind me when I go into classrooms. The viewer will start thinking about their ideas of education when they view this painting. It is intended as an introduction and review/history of the topic. Painting #2 I am recognising that everyone who has been through schooling has not had the same experiences as I have. With mostly positive memories of school, schooling, and the school building I have a specific point of view about education and teaching than others. To be the best educator possible I need to take others viewpoints into consideration. I did this by painting the other extreme. I made sure to note that the lightest and only place with color was past the school doors to the outside world, where this particular individual feels safe. Painting #3 This work represents my interpretation, aspirations, and philosophy of education now and for the future. The cut n paste collage elements represent the fact that my educational philosophy is made up of many different theories, experiences, opinions, etc. and that not all of them are specifically mine. Some things I have not experienced or completed, but I have been shown examples and wish to incorporate these ideas into my own practice. I included words as a large part of the piece because of the reason that some of these things are future oriented and I may not have a symbol or image in my head that would adequately portray them all. The loose, unfinished style represents that education and my philosophy on it are both changing and growing and cannot be defined without indicating that openness to change, in fact I added a few more words/phrases as I was preparing to pack it up and bring it to hand in. Ultimately I believe the above outcome of education as a changing, socially responsive organism, shaped by community, culture, location, government policy, dominant norms and privileges but I dont think that education has changed enough, or responded to society. I feel that schools should invite community to shape their education more, to accept the influences of culture and location. As for government policy, dominant norms and privileges: education is already heavily influenced by these things (positively and negatively). Since these 3 topics bind education so tightly already, it is important to know and understand them, and hopefully deconstruct them so that the other influences can work their way in.

I am toying with the thought of not having desks for each student. Yes, Id probably keep a few because they do make great work spaces... for some kinds of learners. Id also have mats, chairs, large tables, short tables. tall tables to stand at and do work. Also a large number of computers and/or laptops, ipads etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL8kc0fzs3E YouTube Evolution of Education by degreecentral (mostly an ad for online education, but good points) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U RSA Animate: Sir Ken Robinson: Changing Education Paradigms http://www.flickr.com/photos/smokey_blue/622050897/ (school photo from long ago) flickr image cc licenced by Robert of Fairfax http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_education - oral history, head of Aristotle
