Huron Chamber Spotlight Business of the Week

Hurons Port was Important to the Towns Development

By Lisa Yako Huron has a rich maritime history which has intrigued me since I moved here many years ago. The article, transcribed below, details the beginnings of Hurons fame as one of the most important shipbuilding ports on the Great Lakes in the 1830s. Hurons port was quite busy. As an example, for the week ending May 26, 1832, 19 ships arrived in Huron and 21 departed. These ships carried a variety of cargo including passengers, lime stone, furniture, pork, and whiskey. The rapidly increasing business of this place begins to arrest the attention of our own citizens, as well as travellers and emigrants, who feel an interest in the settlement of Huron County. Since the Steam Boat Sheldon Thompson was built at this port in 1830, it has been noted as one of the best places for ship building on the western Lakes. Since which, the following large Schooners have been built and fitted out at this place, viz. the Marengo, launched in June, 1831- burthen 105 tons;- the Austerlitz, launched in April, 1832- burthern 131 tons, built by Capt. Church and owned by O. Newberry, Esq. of Detroit;the Prince Eugene, launched in May, 1832- burthern 101 tons, built by Capt. Parsons, and owned by Mr. T. Jackson of Huron;- the Buffalo, launched in May, 1832- burthern 161 tons;- and a new Schooner, now on the stocks, which will be launched about the 20th June- burthern 130 tons;- the two last vessels owned by Messrs. Standart & Hamilton of Milan, and built by Capt. Church. They are all built of the best materials and after the most approved models, and by first rate ship builders;- any country may well be proud of either of them. The above mentioned vessels, together with the well know Lady of the Lakes, Louisa Jenkins, Cincinnati, Mary of Milan, Eclipse, and a number of small vessels, too numberous to mention, are owned at this port and Milan, and employed in exporting produce to Detroit and the upper Lakes, as well as to Buffalo and Oswego; and in return bringing merchandize and emigrants from Buffalo;- give to the Port of Huron a name abroad and at home of increasing importance. It is a well known fact, that this place began its date as a port in 1824; at which time waggons were frequently driven across the mouth of the river on a sand bar, which obstructed the waters of the Huron, and caused them to set back in the low lands

Huron, Ohio, May 26, 1832 from the Norwalk Reflector of the adjoining country, occasioning innumerable and complicated diseases. These evils the fostering hand of Government not only removed, but converted the harbor into one of the best and safest on the Lake, by extending piers a quarter of a mile into the Lake, preventing sand from washing into the channel. To the country generally it is of vast importance, as good roads lead to Milan, and from that village to all surrounding country. The merchants of Milan and Huron have gone into competition with those of Sandusky city in vending salkt, and purchasing produce, which has reduced the price of the former, and advanced the latter to unreasonable rates. The farmers feel the effects of this competition to a great extent; many of whom are rapidly increasing in wealth. The town of Huron, in a great measure, owes it flattering prospects to the enterprising citizens of Milan; through whose influence and exertions appropriations were made for the improvement of the harbor. The village of Milan is well situated for trade, and by its connection with Huron by the Huron River, which is navigable up within three miles of Milan, together with its healthy location, will soon become a place of extensive business. It is in contemplation to connect the two villages, at the head of navigation, by a canal, which will no doubt ere long be carried into effect. A daily line of Steam Boats, from Buffalo to Detroit, now call at Huron, both on their upward and downward passage, landing and receiving passengers, freight, & c. A daily line o f Stages has also been recently established, running from Huron through Milan, Norwalk, Mount Vernon, to Columbus. The large amount of business already brought to the Lake, by this route, exceeds the expectations of its most sanguine friends. Note: The Milan Canal, which was completed in 1839, brought a period of prosperity to Milan. The Canal linked Milan to the Huron River and, subsequently, Lake Erie. Ships traveled along the three-mile canal, and then proceeded to the Huron River and eventually traveled another seven miles to Lake Erie through the town of Huron. Farmers could bring their grain, hogs, and other goods to market in Milan and save a days travel time over less than ideal roads. Farmers from a 70-80 mile radius to the south, east, and west took advantage of Milans Canal. In its heyday, 600-700 wagons arrived in Milan per day, and as many as 20 sailing vessels were loaded with upwards of 35,000 bushels of grain. The population of Milan surged from around 280 residents in 1824 to 500 in 1840 to 1,500 in 1850. Ultimately, the Milan Canal resulted in a major decline in the shipbuilding and exports from Huron.

Ed. Note: This history of one of Hurons favorite landmarks was compiled by June and Jake Claus and Rick Mesenburg. It was part of the recent Huron Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Huron event that featured many Showboat memories. The 10 North Main Street site was the home of the Huron Fish Company since the early 1900s. In 1959 the property was purchased by Walt Mesenburg who had been operating a sporting goods and carry out store in Norwalk for many years. In 1960 he opened Walts Sports Center and operated selling sporting goods, boats, and motors with the help of his brother-in-law, Jake Claus, who returned to Ohio following his discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps and college in California. In 1965 Walt and Jake (now a co-partners) added the Pilot House bar on the North end of the building. In 1971, being inspired by a Chrysler Boat advertisement and a Las Vegas Showboat Casino, the growing Huron recreational activities, and the most desired location on the North Coast, Walt and Jake opened the Showboat Restaurant. In 1973 the team purchased the church across the street and operated it as a banquet room (to take up the slack from the overcrowded restaurant). In 1975 the banquet hall moved to the restaurant site and the Pilot House Bar moved to the corner site. The bar at the restaurant was now dubbed the Waterfront Saloon. Walt and Jake were always thinking up new ways to attract customers, coming up with extravagant seafood buffets, the Northcoasts most spectacular fresh 20-foot long salad bar, nightly specials throughout the week, and the assurance of management and crew of a pleasant dining experience with the combination of quality service, excellent cuisine and exciting panoramic view of Lake Erie and the Huron Pier and Lighthouse. Walt retired in 1975 leaving Jake and June at the helm. Maintaining the fine standards that had been established to insure success, the Showboat continued to prosper with the assistance of Walt and Jakes children: Rick, Randy, and Mitch Mesenburg and Charlene, Greg, Mark, and Marianne Claus. The seven served at every position from washing dishes and sweeping floors to being bus, fine chefs, hostesses, servers, bar tenders and managers of all departments at one time or another.

A History of Showboat Restaurant & Waterfront Saloon

The Showboat was recognized annually by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine as one of the top 500 leading independent commercial foodservice operations in the United States. Community involvement and support were in the forefront of the Showboat operation for over 22 years. The Showboat hosted the Huron Rotary Club for lunch each week and the Huron Chamber of Commerce each month, as well as hosting the Chambers annual Blizzard Blitz! During the 22 years of operation Jake credits the Showboat success to two things: The hundreds of devoted employees (some who were with him during the entire 22 years). It was a real family and provided an impressive contribution to the economy of the community by employing up to 85 in Summer months and a half million dollars in payroll per year. And the loyal customers, many of whom celebrated very special events at the Showboat (engagements, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.)

Terra State Community College New President Visits Erie County with New Dean
Dr. Jerome Webster, Terra State Community Colleges sixth president, spent last Wednesday with business leaders in Erie County through a series of round table discussions on how the college can assist in developing the workforce of the 21st century for business and industry. Terra State, located in Fremont, Ohio, is a twoyear accredited, state-supported, commuter college. Terra State offers students the opportunity to complete the first two years of coursework towards a four-year degree at another institution or complete an associate degree in applied business, applied science, arts, individualized study, science, or technical studies. Terra State, noted for its history of being a progressive college, especially in the area of the skilled trades, prepares to move with the new president into its next era of focusing on job-based training and practical education applications. The college is enhancing its signature programs in the trades as well as developing and expanding newer programs in healthcare, business, entrepreneurship, hospitality and the arts. Last weeks sessions provided an opportunity for the president to share his vision for the college and for the businesses of Erie County to share their needs with Terra State. Dr. Webster was accompanied by Michael Shirtz, Terra States new Dean of Business & Creative Arts, and Tom Forster, owner of OPS Insurance who hosted the events in Erie County. The meetings today with Webster and Shirtz were outstanding and the dialog really focused

on creating great opportunities for appropriate training of our workforce in this region, said Forster. This is the beginning of a new type of partnership in higher education that will become the norm for the 21st century. We were honored to have these conversations today, said Shirtz. Understanding the needs of our regional business and industry helps drive not just our curriculum, but helps us effectively train and educate the workforce that serves our economic communities. Webster and Shirtz will continue business and development discussions with Erie County partners over the next few months. For information call Terra States Business & Creative Arts Division at 419-559-2233 or visit Terra States web site at www.terra.edu.

In todays world, we are faced with the challenge of deciding which of the many worthy causes we will support through the giving of our time and money. Most people choose a cause that affects their own life or that of a loved one. For Huron High School graduate and author, Nick Shamhart, the cause that is close to his heart is autism. Shamhart is the father of a severely autistic daughter. In his most recent book, entitled The Fog Within, he strives to delve into the mind of an autistic woman and understand the trials that she faces throughout her life. The Autism Speaks web site describes autism as follows: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in 88 children have been identified with an ASD. Further, autism is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Boys are almost five times more likely to have autism than girls. ASD commonly co-occurs with other developmental, psychiatric, neurologic, chromosomal, and genetic

diagnoses. Autism is not only difficult on a family due to often severe behavioral issues, but the costs associated with this disorder frequently put a strain on the family financially. The CDC states that On average, medical expenditures for individuals with an ASD were 4.16.2 times greater than for those without an ASD. Though Autism Awareness Month is not officially until April, Nick Shamhart will raise awareness of autism when he discusses his latest novel at the Huron Public Library on March 28. This visit is part of Shamharts second annual Author for Autism fundraiser. From March 28 through the end of April, Shamhart will donate all the proceeds from the sale of his five novels to Autism Speaks. As stated on their web site, Autism Speaks is the worlds leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. If you are interested in learning more about autism or hearing about The Fog Within from the author, plan to attend Shamharts program which will begin at 7 PM on March 28 at the Huron Public Library.

Honor Flight Soars onto the Big Screen

Thousands of U.S. Veterans from Ohio and across the country have visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. for free, thanks to the leadership of an organization called Honor Flight and its many supporters. Now the inspiring story of Honor Flight has been made into a documentary movie, and Stein Hospice is proud to sponsor two showings of the film. The Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky is hosting the event. Honor Flight will be shown Thursday, April 18 in the Great Room in the Veterans Hall of the Ohio Veterans Home. Show times are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are free, but reservations are needed. Call 800-625-5269 or visit www. steinhospice.org to reserve a seat. There is a four-ticket limit. Facilities, schools and other groups interested in attending should contact Julie Yeager, Veteran Services Director, 800-625-5269, jyeager@ steinhospice.org. Refreshments will be served, and representatives from local Honor Flight organizations will be on hand to explain the program and promote future flights. Stein Hospice works with local Honor Flight organizations in Cleveland and Toledo to transport interested Veterans who are hospice patients. The 24-hour trip, which begins and ends at a regional airport, includes stops at other war memorials. The Veterans come home exhausted, but filled with heartwarming memories. Wherever they go that day, they are thanked by strangers and treated like heroes, said Ron Brooks, a Stein Hospice nurse who has accompanied several Stein patients on the trip. Veterans fly for free, but guardians pay for the trip. For more information, visit www.honorflight.org. The film chronicles the story of four World War II veterans in Wisconsin who have been touched by Honor Flight. The story of these four men is repeated across the country, as Veterans in their late 80s and 90s overcome obstacles to visit the memorial and volunteers do everything they can to make it happen. Many veterans say, with the exception of their wedding day and the birth of their children, the trip is the best day of their life, according to the filmmakers.

Preschool Offers Children More Than 1,2,3s & A,B,Cs

Research shows the more opportunities offered to children early on in life, the more likely they will succeed throughout their school experience. As the Third Grade Guarantee is at the forefront of conversations of school administrators throughout Ohio, Huron City Schools administration and staff would like to see children try to obtain all the possible advantages they can while moving forward. Children that have the opportunity to participate in an early childhood programs will have exposure to a variety of literacy-based activities. This experience will allow the children to practice and even master many concepts that are necessary to become successful as they continue in the school setting, explained Mrs. Meredith Cotterill, Preschool Teacher at Shawnee Elementary School. Early Childhood Programs also prepare children for necessary skills like: following a routine, listening and carrying out multistep directions, interacting with others and gaining independence, she continued. Huron City Schools will begin accepting applications for the three and four year old Little Tigers Preschool beginning on April 9th 2013. Applications may be obtained at the Shawnee School Office and an appointment for screening will be made at that time. To be eligible, children must be 3 years old by September 30, 2013. Parents are asked to call the school 419-4331234 ext. 5101 between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on or after April 9th to schedule an appointment.
