PROFIBUS Easy to Use Process Automation

... offers unrivaled benefits.

Standardized

PROFIBUS is based on modularity and standards; the benefits to the user are flexibility and ease of use. The use of a single communication protocol enables continuous, discrete, and safety-related processes to run on the same bus, thus eliminating the need for separate systems. The PA Devices profile ensures compatible device behavior on the bus: the user is free to choose any profile device. Diagnostic data display is sorted according to the NAMUR NE 107 standard: The equipment operator can detect the status reliably and react appropriately. Efficiency requires high plant availability. The integrated redundancy of PROFIBUS is unrivaled when it comes to uninterrupted operation. Equally important are the diagnostic messages sent acyclicly from the devices, bus, and process. These provide information regarding the current plant status and enable timely, statusbased intervention. The result is higher availability with reduced maintenance costs.

Efficient

PROFIBUS enables proactive management over the life cycle of the plant. When more advanced device technology is to be deployed, plant operation must not be interrupted when installing the new devices. The solution: starting in profile for PA Devices version 3.02, new devices can temporarily adopt the functionality of predecessor versions. In this way plant operation is not interrupted, and the additional functions are integrated during the next maintenance phase. The ability to take advantage of device innovations is assured, and the inventory of replacement devices is significantly reduced.

Proactive

PROFIBUS is known for its high degree of innovation: User requests are gathered and implemented rapidly. Profile 3.02 with its NAMUR-compliant diagnostics concept is an example of this. Other examples are the higheffective redundancy solutions and the proxy technology for connecting PROFIBUS systems to the Ethernet level (PROFINET). At the same time, existing plants can be modernized and expanded at any time with PROFIBUS: HART technology is integrated without difficulty, safetyrelated and drive tasks are solved with PROFIsafe and PROFIdrive, respectively.

Process automation with PROFIBUS Easy to Use ...

Plant operators in the process industry demand a high level of reliability and profitability. Their plants must function properly in harsh industrial environments without interruption for years, and the interaction among different systems and components of different manufacturers must be ensured. PROFIBUS, the worlds leading industrial communication system, satisfies these requirements with its solution for the process industry.

PROFIBUS the means to success PROFIBUS with its PROFIBUS DP and PA variants supports hybrid automation and is thus suited for all process industry applications without limitation. The PA Devices application profile was developed for process devices in close coordination with users. This profile is the vendor-neutral standard for a wide range of device types, such as control valves and measuring instruments for pressure, temperature, and flow, and their use in process automation. The devices with profile functionality behave compatibly within the system, enabling the user to choose the optimum equipment for his own multi-vendor system. The main performance characteristics of PROFIBUS and the PA Devices profile in process automation are: Horizontal and vertical integration over the entire plant topology High power infeed and, thus, a large number of components for hazardous area operation Comprehensive support for cost-effective plant operation Effective redundancy solutions for high plant availability

Redundancy

Unrivaled integration Process-related plants are typically complex in structure and tightly integrated into the communication landscape of the company: Unhindered data flow is thus the primary user requirement. This requirement is met with PROFIBUS and PROFINET with their unrivaled horizontal and vertical integration: PROFIBUS DP and PA make use of the same communication protocol, which enables plant sequences typical of the process industry (e.g., in a reactor) and of the manufacturing industry (e.g., during packaging) to run on the same bus, i.e., hybrid automation. This integration simplifies many activities and lowers costs associated with planning, installation, operation, personnel training, documentation, and maintenance. The direct connection of PA segments to PROFINET and thus to the MES and ERP levels accommodates the increasing use of Ethernet-based communication with all its advantages. The proxy technology developed for this purpose converts the physical signals and communication protocol of PROFIBUS PA; PA segments with their properties remain unchanged. This assures extensive investment protection, because the technology is not replaced but rather expanded.

Integration

... for optimized operation.

High performance for instrumentation in hazardous areas Equipment in hazardous areas must comply with two IEC standards: IEC 61158-2 for the fieldbus and IEC 60079 for explosion protection. PROFIBUS developments take this into account: The FISCO model (now IEC 60079-27) enables implementation of explosion protection and a simple verification of intrinsic safety without individual calculation, provided certified devices and components are used. The results in greatly simplified procedures, e.g., for device maintenance is performed during operation. Input current limiting can be dealt with by adapting the types of explosion protection to plant areas according to whether or not maintenance-related interventions are necessary during operation. A segment coupler supplies the main line, an area where intervention during operation is not necessary, a higher current feed is permissible there, according to EEx e, of up to 1000 mA. The field devices are then connected to the barriers with intrinsic safety according to EEx i with 40 mA each. Thus a high number of devices can be connected compared to FISCO.

Support for service The service costs for a plant influence the production costs considerably. PROFIBUS solutions can significantly reduce these costs: PA devices supply numerous diagnostic messages about the devices own status and from the process, which provides substantial support for preventive maintenance, asset management, and high availability. The PA Device profile 3.02 also contains the mapping of diagnostic messages to the categories in NAMUR recommendation NE 107. As a result, plant operators and maintenance personnel are provided selectively sorted information with detailed representations, including after device replacement. Device replacement during continuous operation of a plant is a necessity. When this takes place, different versions of old and new devices can result in incompatibilities. The PROFIBUS solution developed for this purpose specifies that field devices with profile version 3.02 and higher must also have implemented the functionalities of predecessor versions and thus must be able to take on the role of replaced, older devices automatically. This prevents operation downtimes and simplifies parts inventories.

Smart redundancy solutions Redundancy Process equipment must often run for months without interruption; otherwise, total production failure could occur. Equipment availability is thus a central user requirement, to which redundant design of certain plant units contributes. PROFIBUS provides a smart solution for this with new couplers and active field distributors (AFT): couplers and AFDs have automatically reacting bus terminations that independently isolate defective sub-segments when a communication path is interrupted and perform the switchover to other paths. In the event of coupler failures a bumpless changeover occurs; in a ring-shaped topology the interrupted ring is transformed into two functional linear paths. After error elimination, the ring is reclosed. This increases plant availability significantly.
