Mechanical Engineering
Time: 03 Hours MATERIAL SCIENCE AND METALLURGY Maximum Marks: 100

Instructions to candidates: Answer any TWO full questions from Part-A, Two full questions from Part-B and One full question from Part-C

PART- A 1 a Define the terms: (i) Space lattice (ii) Coordination number (iii) Atomic packing factor With the help of sketch of FCC unit cell and from fundamentals calculate the atomic packing factor b With the help of a neat sketches explain the point defects found in ionic crystals c What is diffusion? Calculate the value of the diffusivity D in meters squared per second for the diffusion of carbon in r iron (FCC) at 927 0C. Use values D0=2.0x10-5 m2/s, Q=142 KJ/mol and R=8.314 KJ/(mol-k) 2 a With the help of a neat schematic conventional stress strain diagram for mild steel under uniaxial static tension explain clearly the behavior of the material till fracture. b Briefly explain the concept of recovery, recrystalisation and grain growth c Consider the gas carburizing of a gear of 1020 steel at 9270C. Calculate the time in minutes necessary to increase the carbon content to 0.40% at 0.50mm below the surface. Assume that the carbon content at the surface is 0.90% and that the steel has a nominal carbon content of 0.20% . erf Z z 0.7112 0.75 D9270C =1.28x10-11 m2/s 0.7421 0.80 3 a Explain the phenomenon of ductile to brittle transition b Define creep. With the help of typical creep curve indicate the stages of creep and explain each stage. c What is Fatigue? How would you conduct a test to assess the fatigue life of a material? Explain briefly (i) Fatigue lime (ii) Fatigue strength PART- B 4 a What do you mean by invariant point? With the help of phase diagram explain (i) Eutectoid reaction (ii) Peritectic reaction b Two metals A and B of melting points 1000 0C and 8000C respectively have unlimited mutual liquid solubilities. The solid solubility of B in A is a maximum of 20% at the eutectic temperature of 5000C, which reduces to 10% at 00C. The solid solubility of A in B is a maximum of 10% at the eutectic temperature which reduces to 5% at 00C. No solid state reactions other than those due to solubility change occur in the series. The eutectic composition is 70% B. Assume solidus, Liquidus and Solvus lines to be straight. (i) Draw the phase diagram of the series, label all the points, lines and phases (ii) For an alloy of 40% B, find beginning and end of solidification, composition and relative amount of phases present at 3000C c State and explain Gibbs phase rule.
